Assalam alakum

I read a hadith about learning a ilm (a religious knowledge as i understood) for worldy gain is really bad.
(i dont remember exact hadith but maybe you know it already)

So i am willing to learn arabic BUT the thing is, i fear that if learning arabic language (or rather the language in Quran) is one of those ilms and if i use my arabic knowledge later on for worldy gains then i might be one of those people mentioned in hadith, right ? Or do you think whats mentioned in hadith is more like ilm of hadith or fiqh ? I really dont know... : S

And also if you ask me what is my intention behind this; I could say that; I know my intention may not be only to understand Quran but also i might use it when i talk to arabs or for other things, so this is what makes me worried; what if i use it for ''worldy gain''

I dont know what should i do...

Do you have any idea about what to do ? or what not to do ?

Wa `alaykumu s-salām,

Come on bro! There is nothing wrong in using the (learned) Arabic for communication. Qur'anic Arabic is not same as the local Arabic. Also, You can use Arabic to preach Islam to Arabs.

Islam is also a way of life. Learning Arabic to just understand Qur'an is not Islam. You will also have to communicate by being within the parameter of Islam.

Do not worry so much. Start learning Arabic and Enjoy!!!! ;]

And Here are some fatwas which might be helpful for you:

1. http://islamqa.info/en/ref/20100

Is it right to take/accept money for teaching Quran?

Praise be to Allaah.

The Standing Committee was asked about whether it is permissible to accept payment for teaching Qur’aan. They replied:

Yes, it is permissible to accept payment for teaching Qur’aan according to the more correct of the two scholarly views, because of the general meaning of the hadeeth:

“The thing for which you most deserve to take payment is the Book of Allaah,” (narrated by al-Bukhaari), and because there is a real need for that. And Allaah is the Source of strength. May Allah bless our Prophet Muhammad.

Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, vol. 4, p. 91

2. http://www.islam-qa.com/en/ref/95781

Praise be to Allaah.

There is nothing wrong with accepting payment for teaching Arabic, and there is nothing wrong with accepting it for teaching Qur’aan, and that does not mean that one will not be rewarded for it, if he does the task well and intends thereby to benefit the Muslims and bring them closer to the language of their Prophet and their Qur’aan.

:salam2:

What do you mean by worldly gain? Are you going to study Qur'anic Arabic to just earn money instead of trying to understand the Qur'an as an act of obedience? And communication by being within the parameter of Islam is not worldly thing. Also see the fatwas.

Yes, i saw them. I didnt mean gain ''money''. I meant like, communicationg with other arabs (not for Islam, just for daily talk) or having a job in arabic country etc.

As-Salāmu `Alaykum,

Brother, you can not or rather should not try to erase what you have learned from your memory. Nothing wrong with communicating, job, etc as long as you do not go against Islam such as by using vulgar words, slandering Islam, etc.
