Inner peace

In the name of Allah[1] (SWT)[2], The All-Merciful, The Ever-Merciful, All Prayers and Blessings of Allah be upon our master, the most noble Prophet Muhammad (SAWS)[3].

Everyone searches for happiness which is the essence of all our movements and actions in this life. However, happiness has certain secrets. It is not a material thing that a person can attain through money; it is rather a spiritual thing that manifests itself in one's inner peace, tranquil heart and self-satisfaction.

Today, we will present a new light from the Messenger of Allah (SAWS) and the Qur'an. This light is a Du'aa (supplication) of the Prophet (SAWS) after each prayer. It says, 'O Allah, You are As-Salaam (Peace) and from You is all peace, blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.' In other words, the Prophet (SAWS) always supplicated to Allah (SWT) for peace. Therefore the light of today is finding our inner peace.

The utmost degrees of happiness in this world cannot be attained except through self-reconciliation and peace. There are some people suffering from self-conflict. It is a conflict between what is right and wrong, halal (lawful) and haram (unlawful), good and evil, etc. It seems like a psychological world war within oneself. To make the story short, without inner peace, a person will lead a very miserable life. Therefore, if you want to lead a happy life, then ask yourself if you feel inner peace and grade it. A relevant questionnaire on www.amrkhaled.net can help you grade it.

Inner peace in Islam, Qur'an and teachings of the Messenger of Allah (SAWS)

Inner peace has a great value in Islam. The word 'Islam" is derived from the Arabic root Salama (submission in peace). Therefore, one of the meanings of 'a Muslim' is one who lives in peace with himself and gradually his peace extends to the entire world, i.e., peace will be extended to others according to the degree of his inner peace.

The form of greeting in Islam is also a call for peace. We say in Islam As-Salamu-alaikum (peace be upon you) and not good morning, good evening, Bonjour nor hello. Allah Almighty says what can be translates as, "Salute one another (Literally: salute yourselves) with a greeting from the Providence of Allah, blessed and good" (TMQ[4], 24:61). In this verse Allah (SWT) commands us to ask for peace for ourselves and others. It refers to His greeting to us and the inner peace that He (SWT) blesses us with. Moreover, in our daily prayers we say As-Salamu 'alaina (peace be upon us) i.e., we ask Allah (SWT) to grant us the inner peace. In short, our thoughts, words and sentences constantly remind us of peace. This peace springs from inside and extends to the rest of people, creations and the entire universe.

Inner peace is the greatest blessing that Allah granted to the Prophets who are the best of His creation.

Our Prophet (SAWS) is the best of all Prophets upon whom Allah (SWT) commanded us to send peace and blessings upon him (SAWS). Allah (SWT) says what can be translated as, "….O you who have believed, pray for (benediction on) him, and submit in full submission" (TMQ, 33:56). This implies a supplication for the Prophet (SAWS) with the utmost degrees of mercy and peace.

Allah (SWT) also made our supplication for peace and blessings upon the Prophet (SAWS) a way to attain our inner peace. The Prophet (SAWS) said that whenever anyone sends peace upon him, Allah (SWT) passes it to him and he (SAWS) answers back with a similar greeting. In addition, Allah (SWT) sends peace tenfold upon who asks once for peace and blessings for the Prophet (SAWS). This means that just sending peace upon the Prophet (SAWS) brings you inner peace, so how about loving and following his commands!

Jannah (Paradise) is Dar-as-Salam (House of Peace)

The secret behind the eternal happiness of paradise is the great inner peace therein. It is the Divine Salam which is of greater value than palaces and Hur-al-'Aeen (wide-eyed hu*!ris). Allah (SWT) has not called jannah, Dar-al-Hur-al-'Aeem, rather He called it Dar-As-Salam because it is the eternal abode of peace. Allah (SWT) says what can be translated as, "For them is the Residence of Peace within the Providence of their Lord…" (TMQ: 6,127).

Similarily, laylat-ul-Qadr (the Night of Determination) is a night of peace. Allah says what can be translated as, "Peace it is, till the rising of the dawn" (TMQ, 97:5)

Islam is all about peace though it is described by some as a religion that encourages killing, terrorism and violence. Therefore, as Muslims our duty is to pass the truth of Islam to the world. You could start your mission by doing a relevant practical assignment on www.amrkhaled.net. However, going back to the topic of this episode, you should know more facts about our inner peace.

How do people lose their inner peace and its light?

Once a person does something that contradicts his/her values or morals and goes astray from truth, good, right and lawful things, he loses the thread to happiness and thus to inner peace. This could happen through excessive lying (telling truth is peace and lying is doubt), wronging oneself, insisting on doing a major sin, hypocrisy, earning by unlawful means, saying what one does not perform (for instance, you could encourage others to do good while you do not do it yourself), etc.

How to restore inner peace?
- Sit alone and write down the gravest points of conflict that disturbs your life.
- Be logical and sequential.
- Restore your inner peace from Satan. A war for peace.

A man came to the Prophet (SAWS) and asked him if Allah (SWT) would forgive his sins that he keeps repeating. The Prophet (SAWS) replied saying that Allah (SWT) never gets tired of forgiving his slave's sins until; his slave gets tired of asking for Allah's forgiveness. The Prophet (SAWS) gave hope to the man and helped him to get inner peace. Ramadan is the best time to feel inner peace because Satan is captured. Therefore, try to train yourself on inner peace so you can fight Satan after Ramadan and maintain your inner peace forever.

Fruits of inner peace

Once your inner peace is achieved you enjoy its fruits such as: peace to all people around you (family, home and neighbors), transparency in dealing with people around, become a real Muslim (one whom people are spared his hand and tongue), gain a delightful enlightened face like the face of the Prophet (SAWS).

If you did not see the reflection of your inner peace on your surroundings then it is not completely achieved yet. In this case, find out the reason and repent to Allah (SWT).
