Amman - A Jordanian official has accused Israel of preventing Palestinians from burying their dead near Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque as part of moves to make the holy city more Jewish, the Jordanian press reported on Thursday.
"Israel is defying the will of the international community and international resolutions with a new plan ... to pursue the judaization of Jerusalem," said Abdullah Kanaan of Jordan's Royal Commission for Jerusalem Affairs.
"The pretext is to search for antiquities ... but the truth is it not about searching for antiquities at all but to control the holy city," he told Petra news agency in remarks published by Jordanian dailies.
Kanaan claimed that as part of "this new policy, Israel is preventing Muslims from burying their dead in the Muslim cemetery adjacent to Al-Aqsa mosque".
He urged the international community to help stop Israeli excavations in Jerusalem, charging that such action "undermines the foundations of peace, not only between Arabs and Israel, but in the entire region and the entire world."
Earlier this year Israel triggered an outcry in Arab and Muslim countries over excavation and repair work at Al-Aqsa mosque compound, which is revered by both by Jews and Muslims.
Jordan repeatedly warned that the excavations were threatening the foundations of the holy site but Israel insisted the work was risk-free and would strengthen an access ramp for the benefit and safety of visitors.
