Beautiful statements from Ibn Qayyim regarding the heart:

The heart becomes sick, as the body becomes sick, and its remedy is al-Tawbah and protection [from transgression]. It becomes rusty as a mirror becomes rusty, and it is polished by al-Dhikr. It becomes naked as the body becomes naked, and its beautification is at-Taqwa. It becomes hungry and thirsty as the body becomes hungry and thirst, and its food and drink are knowledge (of Allah), love (of Allah), reliance (upon Allah), repentance (to Allah) and servitude (towards Allah).”

The most distant heart from Allah is the hard heart.

If the heart becomes hardened, the eye becomes dry (i.e. are unable to cry out of fear of Allah)

The love of Allah shall not enter a heart which loves the dunya, except a camel passes through the eye of a needle (i.e. it is impossible).

A servant does not reach (taste, acquire) the reality of eemaan until he considers tribulation (calamity) to be a blessing and comfort (opulence) to be a calamity, and until he loves not that he should be praised for worship of Allaah.

Once Ibrahim bin Ad-ham was eating crusty bread and was drinking salty water (from the sea). He said to his companion:

"If the kings and their sons were to know the delight we have, then surely they will fight us with their swords (for this delight)!"

- Shaykh Ibn Jibreen

Although the food they were eating was dry to their tongues, yet their hearts were filled with satisfaction due to their belief in Allaah and their righteous actions.

"How strange is the one who takes care of his face, which is seen by the creation- so he washes & cleans it from dirt and impurities. But he does not take care of his heart which is seen by the Creator." Al-Ghazali

The sign of a person being truthful to His Lord is that: he becomes happy when he is in seclusion in order to carry out acts of obedience, just like how a sinner becomes happy when he is in seclusion in order to follow his desires.
