Sometime back I heard about a discussion from scholars here explaining about meteorites are actually flaming fires shot at the jinn who tries fly up into the sky or heavens.
"And we(jinn) have sought to reach the heaven; but found it filled with stern guards and flaming fires." (Al-Jinn 72:8)
"And verily, we used to sit there in station, to (steal) a hearing, but any listens now will find a flaming fire watching him in ambush. "(Al-Jinn 72:9)
So meteoritess that science have explained have a real purpose: to deter the jinn from reaching the heavens!

And another purpose of meteorites is for sending iron onto the earth.
"..And He(Allah) sent down('Nazala' in Arabic which means to 'send down' or
'descend') IRON('Hadid' in Arabic'), wherein is mighty violence and many uses for mankind.(Quran 57:25)
Geologists today recognize that the only natural form of iron that occurs in the earth is found only in meteorites. Meteorites are found on the earth because they descended from space:sky, or heavens.
So everything has a purpose and did not happen randomly or by accident.
