Thousands of Syrians are fleeing the Aleppo countryside, heading towards Turkey, as government forces break through rebel defences in the northern province.

The development comes as diplomatic talks on ending the war in Syria remain on hold and Saudi Arabia announces its readiness to send in ground troops.

A Turkish aid organisation said on Friday that about 50,000 refugees urgently need food, water and shelter.
"In the last three days over 50,000 people from Azaz across the Turkish town of Kilis reached the Turkish border," Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) said.

"People, who fled their homes to protect their lives, came to the border and they are trying to survive sleeping under the trees in the open air."

Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkey's prime minister, told a Syria donor conference in London on Thursday that between 60,000 and 70,000 Syrians were on their way towards Turkey, trying to escape the deadly violence in Aleppo.

"They attacked Aleppo and the humanitarian corridor, [the] logistic corridor from Turkey to Aleppo, has been cut off," he said.

"All the needs, food, everything to Aleppo where 300,000 people are living, were coming from Turkey."
Sami Kekhia, a Syrian activist, told Al Jazeera that tens of thousands have fled their homes and are spread along the border with Turkey.

"We do not have an exact number of how many people are at the border, but we know that between 5,000 and 7,000 are currently waiting at the border with Turkey," he told Al Jazeera over the phone from the Turkey-Syria border.

The Syrian government, backed by Russian air strikes, launched a major offensive from the north of Aleppo and captured several strategically important towns on Monday.

Opposition armed groups have appealed for help as their main supply route to Turkey comes under pressure.
Kekhia said: "People are fleeing the deadly Russian air strikes and the government offensive. Russian air strikes have not stopped: when a Russian warplane targets a building that building turns to dust.

"Residents of Aleppo city have not left their homes, but are preparing for a possible siege of the area. The local council of the rebel-held part of the city has told residents to reduce their consumption of food and medical supplies."

The government holds the west of Aleppo city while the rebels hold the east, but the situation is largely reversed in the countryside.

"Everyone is trying to prepare for a possible siege, and if the government blocks the one main road which allows access to this part of the city, the city will be on lockdown," Kekhia said.

"That road, known as Castello, has been repeatedly targeted by the government and Russian air strikes.

"However, the FSA (Free Syrian Army) and groups fighting the government are optimistic about winning the fight for Aleppo and preventing a siege."

At least 40,000 Syrians have fled their homes in northern Aleppo since the Syrian government launched its offensive on Aleppo, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Wednesday.

Syrian forces and their allies broke a three-year rebel siege of the two Shia towns of Nubul and Zahraa in
Aleppo province, Syria's official news agency SANA reported on Wednesday, cutting off a main supply route to nearby Turkey.

The development came after days of rapid military gains north of the major city of Aleppo, with Russian air strikes playing a key role in the advance.

Nubul and Zahraa, with an estimated 60,000 population, are connected to the border by areas under the control of Kurdish armed groups that provided access.

The towns have been besieged by rebels since 2012, and reaching them had long been a goal of President Bashar al-Assad's government, which has also sought to sever vital rebel supply routes into Aleppo from Turkey.

On Friday the UN Security Council met to discuss the peace efforts, with Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO head, saying that the Russian air strikes were "undermining the efforts to find a political solution".

The Security Council met for closed-door consultations with Staffan de Mistura, the UN envoy, who suspended the Geneva negotiations on Wednesday until February 25.

Russia rejected Western accusations that it had sabotaged the peace talks by backing the government's Aleppo offensive.

"It's in bad taste. This is not a good time for recriminations," Vitaly Churkin, the Russian ambassador, said.
Earlier in the day, a senior Russian diplomat criticised Saudi Arabia's offer to send ground troops to Syria.
Konstantin Kosachyov said any Saudi ground intervention without the consent of the Syrian government
would be illegitimate.

The Saudi air force has targeted the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group with air strikes since the coalition campaign began in Syria in September 2014.

Saudi willingness

Thursday's announcement by Brigadier-General Ahmed Asseri was the first time the kingdom had offered to provide ground troops to defeat ISIL, which has seized territory in Syria and Iraq.

"Today, the Saudi kingdom announced its readiness to participate with ground troops with the US-led coalition against ISIL, because we now have the experience in Yemen," Asseri told Al Jazeera.

"We know that air strikes cannot be enough and that a ground operation is needed. We need to combine both to achieve better results on the ground."

The offer is expected to be discussed when the US convenes a meeting of defence ministers from coalition countries fighting the in Brussels next week.

Iranians love syrian...u are in mistake...we love syria. the soldiors are there for supporting poeple. we have soldiors there and know .

Sure. But do Syrians love the idea that Iran sends troops and military aid to Syrian president whose army has butchered its own citizens? Why do Syrians now try to escape in panic before regime of Assad will take power in Aleppo?

All these things have more than one side and we should learn to see what is happening also by the eyes of the other side.

No need to go to Syria now to the middle of the war. The first post tells very well what Syrians are thinking about the army of Assad:

"In the last three days over 50,000 people from Azaz across the Turkish town of Kilis reached the Turkish border,"

Ofc its needed because you can see the truth by your own eyes.

To me its enough right now to listen others (journalists, refugees). Here have came also a lot of Syrians and they surely have told me why they have had to escape. Idea that civilians would travel to the middle of the conflict "to see what there is happening" is very unnecessary.

Also of course its needed to read news and reports from many sources. All of them tell partly propaganda what makes their own actions to look good and all others as devils.

Thousands of Syrians brave cold, rain at Turkish border

Turkish border remains shut as thousands continue to flee government offensive on rebel-held areas of Aleppo City.

06 Feb 2016 22:16

Tens of thousands of Syrian refugees have gathered near a border crossing with Turkey after fleeing a major government offensive on rebel-held areas in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Saturday that his country would keep its "open border policy" for the refugees, adding that 5,000 of them have already been allowed into Turkey.

"Another 50,000 to 55,000 are on their way and we cannot leave them there," he said from the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, after holding talks with EU counterparts.

Our doors are not closed, but at the moment there is no need to host such people inside our borders.
Suleyman Tapsiz, governor of Kilis province

However, the governor of the Turkish province of Kilis, on the border with Syria, said thousands of Syrian refugees arrived at the Turkish border near Kilis City in the last 48 hours and were being accommodated at camps on the Syrian side of the border.

Suleyman Tapsiz also told reporters at the Oncupinar border crossing near Kilis that another 70,000 Syrians could be expected if Russian air strikes and military advances by the Syrian government continued.

"Our doors are not closed, but at the moment there is no need to host such people inside our borders," he told Associated Press news agency, adding that the refugees had been given food, blankets and tents.

Government offensive

The Syrian army, backed by Russian military support, is carrying out a major offensive that has sparked a severe humanitarian crisis in rebel-held areas of Aleppo.

The advance is the most significant outcome yet of the Russian intervention that began on September 30, that has targeted armed opposition groups.

Syria says any foreign troops would 'return in coffins'

Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr, reporting from Kilis, said the number of refugees at the border was likely to increase.

"Already, thousands of people from the countryside have fled towards the Turkish border. Inside Aleppo City, what we understand from people we have been speaking to is that families are starting to pack up and leave. There is still no mass exodus, but people are scared. Some families are choosing to leave," Khodr said.

"People are saying that prices are on the rise and that fuel is scarce. They are worried because the government has employed such tactics in the past; they lay sieges to towns and villages. Civilians and fighters starve, and in the end they have to surrender.

"We do not know the exact number of people who live in the rebel-controlled eastern districts of Aleppo City but some figures estimate between 200,000 and 300,000 people," our correspondent added.

'International obligations'

EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini said foreign ministers had reminded Cavusoglu of Ankara's international obligations towards refugees.

"We discussed this with our Turkish colleague remembering the fact that there is first a moral if not a legal duty ... to protect those in need of international protection," Mogherini told a news conference Saturday.

The UN said that a massive number of Syrian refugees were camped outside the Bab al-Salam border crossing, hoping to reach Turkey, which already hosts more than two million Syrian refugees.

Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said it was finalising preparations for an influx.

I wonder why Iran is supporting the oppressors :the killer instead of the poor people of Syria? Is it because they are Sunnies. Islam teaches to defend the rights of people whatever are their beliefs , no oppression no mischief in Islam is allowed . Still Sunnies love Allah , Quran , prophet Mohammad salla Allah alaihi wa sallam and his family . Why Iran hate other muslems ?
Please think again if we are true muslems we should be united .

Iran like Russia wants to strengthen their political influence in the Middle East. It´s not a question of religion but political, economical and military matter. Why is Syria important? Almost every country in the world still thinks that ability to reach the sea short is strategic importance. To both, to Iran and Russia it´s important to keep alliance on the Mediterranean Sea shore. The other reason is to control the oil resources. All those countries whose have took part to this conflict want to see themselves as multi-super nations in this area. By the same reasons also USA, French, UK, Turkey and Israel are involved. Their the basic stragedy seems to be borrowed from the old Latin saying "Divide et impera" (divide and rule).

Who cares about the civilians in this mess? Oh, all of them of course claim to do so. Who really? Answer is simple. None.

You are right dear sister, but since muslems know there is a coming day when Allah subhanahu wa taaala will repay each soul what was earned on this earth , muslems whether Sunni or Shia , Iranian or any other nationality should think twice before supporting the politician , on the day of judgment they won't help. Yes now they have the power they can kill, oppress , hang , torture , imprison innocents but on that day they will have no power to defend themselves or those who followed them:

(166) 166 - Then would those who are followed clear themselves of those who follow (them): they would see the penalty, and all relations between them would be cut off.

(167) 167 - And those who followed would say: if only we had one more chance, we would clear ourselves of them, as they have cleared themselves of us. thus will God show them (the fruits of) their deeds as (nothing but) regrets. nor will there be a way for them out of the fire.

Yes they should but now many unfortunately believe the words of the politicians and forget to follow what Islam teaches. May Allah gives to us all the wisdom. And to those whose are politicians too.
