The odd prayer (usually 3 units but could be 5,7) . Its Sunnah in some school of thoughts, but obligatory in Hanafee school.

One more thing, the Prophet never missed it even when travelling.

it is prayed after salah isha and before salah fajr. it has many ways. it varies from 1 rakat to 7,9,or 11 rakats.

you can pray like maghrib salah or make salaam after 2 rakat and then 1 rakat.

it has dua qunoot also in the third rakat.

aa..Prophet alaihi salatus salam, never missied the salah ul-witr.
if he missed it anyway, he use to pray in the next day after sunrise, with the salat ad-dhuha

and the special supplication called Du`aa Al-Qunoot (supplication of devotion) is said after standing up after rukoo` and before sujood.

However, is it also correct to make the takbeer and Qunoot before the rukoo' ? Because I've seen most people pray like that.

the witr is at the less one rak3a and you can pray what you can but it have to be an odd number(1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11,....) of rak3at , and the best is what you do in your masjid 11 rak3a and you do salam after every two rak3at then the last is one rak3a.
لقول عائشة رضي الله عنها: " كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي بالليل إحدى عشرة ركعة يوتر منها بواحدة " وفي لفظ " يسلم بين كل ركعتين ويوتر بواحدة" أخرجه مسلم.
