:salam2:,
when you do somebody's work they pray for you: may you live long life.
but wht about if someone do not want to live a long life due to temptations, seeing others suffer, life uncertainty?
can we pray: O Allah: dont listen to their prayers, take me up when death is best for me.
i think that 50-yr good life is preferred over 100-yr hard life.
First of all i would like to say that.. A pious man can't wait to die just to meet Allah his creator. But at the same time he would be sad when he feels that His end is near, because death will prevent him from worshipping Allah.
This is how every muslim should feel..
Now about wishing for youself or others to live long or wishing to die..
Ulama and Imams unanimously agreed that it is not permitted for one to wish for death to himself or to other muslims.
When Imam Shafi was dying his eyes were tearing and he said at his last moment: I don't know if my soul is to go to heaven so i congratulates it, Or to hellfire so i Condole it.
Narrated Abu Hurairah: Allah’s Messenger said, “None of you should wish for death. If he is a righteous man, perhaps he may add to (his) good works, and if he is a sinner, possibly he may be repentant (in case he is given a longer life).” (Al-Bukhari)
In addition, Anas reported that: "None of you should wish death because of a calamity befalling him; but if he has to wish for death, he should say: "O Allah! Keep me alive as long as life is better for me and let me die if death is better for me". [Note: Agreed upon on the authoirty of Anas, Al-Lu`Lu' Wal Marjan(1717)]
And to wish to live long is supposed to be for our best interest, because as long as you are alive you can always worship Allah and repent from your sins, in hope for Allah to be pleased with you and grant you Jannah.. But once you are dead there's nothing more you can do.
