Why Manhaj? (methodology) By Shaykh Saalih bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan

Manhaj means The methodology of implementing the beliefs and laws of Islam.

The Salaf us-Saalih (Pious Predecessors) are distinguished for their adherence to the methodological principles outlined in the Book of Allaah, the Sunnah of His Messenger and the practice of the Companions.

Thus, in the arena of Aqeedah (creed) the Salaf us-Saalih follow a particular methodology, which is opposed to that of other than them, such as the Ash'arees, the Mu'tazilah and their likes whose hallmark is to raise the intellect and kalaam (theological rhetoric) over the texts of the Book and the Sunnah and the well-known sayings of the Imaams of this ummah.
Similarly, in the arena of Ibaadah (worship), the Salaf us-Saalih adhere to a methodology opposed to that of the intoxicated Soofees and Grave worshippers, who invent and innovate into the religion that for which Allaah sent down no authority.

Similarly, in the arena of Da'wah (calling to Allaah) and current affairs, the Salaf us-Saalih are distinguished from the innovated and pretentious methodologies of the political activists, who under the guise of following the Salaf and the contemporary Ulamaa, rouse the emotions and sentiments of the common-folk, take them away from the firmly established scholars and merely call to themselves.

Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan - may Allaah preserve him - said, The reasons for disunity are many. From amongst the main causes are: Firstly, opposing the Manhaj (methodology) of the Salaf, the Companions of Allaah's Messenger and those who follow them. So the Salaf had a Manhaj that they adhered to; a Manhaj in aqeedah (creed), a Manhaj in da'wah (calling to Allaah), a Manhaj in enjoining good and forbidding evil, a Manhaj in how to judge between people. This Manhaj, in all situations, was based upon the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of our Messenger . [Shaykh Saalih bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan Wujoob ut-Tathabbut fil-Akhbaaar p.18]

so who are the people of the manhaj today, brother?

:salam2:

As explained above, they are the ones who take their Islam from the early teachings and always fall back to that. To get our Deen from Quran and Sunnah with the understanding of the Companions of the Prophet :saw:, the Tabieen, the Atba' Tabieen.. the great imams and scholars of Islam, from Imam Ahmad, Abu hanifa, Shafi'i, Malik, Awza'i, Bukhari, Muslim...

Hence the manhaj is and always will be the same. According to the commands in the Quran and the advice given by the PRophet :saw:

In the books, writing and speeches it becomes clear. When that scholar refers back to those with more knowledge. Islam is based on evidences and chains of precedence. For example, the words of a Companion of the Prophet :saw: or of Tabieen or a Muhadith of today are of more value than that of a layperson or even an Imam, Scholar or "speaker". - So, we should always look to those people who do not merely give their own ideas or philosophies, but those who are following in the footsteps of those who preceded them..

The Scholars are those who have sat and studied with ulema of Ahlus-Sunnah for many years. They are those who derive their Islam from the clearest of sources and who are known by the scholars and given permission to teach from them. Even, a person can not claim to be student of a Shaykh unless he is actually said by the Shaykh to be his student. We have unfortunately, some people especially in the west who make these claims, but in reality, their manhaj is not same as those they claim to be students of and certainly, are far from that which came from prrevious generations of Muslims.

Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) says:

Hence the saved group is described as Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah, and they are the greater majority and the vast multitude. As for the other groups, they are followers of weird ideas, division, innovation and whims and desires, and none of these groups reached anywhere close to the size of the saved group, let alone being equal to them, rather some of these groups are very small in number. The sign of these groups is that they go against the Qur'aan, Sunnah and scholarly consensus. The one who follows the Qur’aan, Sunnah and scholarly consensus is one of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah.
