Dear Friends,

I thought you would like to know about this new campaign to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, where President Bush is holding nearly 400 detainees without criminal charges or trials. For the first time, some of his top advisors have called for closing this affront to international law, including his own Secretary of Defense. This split inside the Administration gives us a real chance close Guantanamo forever.

This new group called Avaaz is putting together a global petition to close Guantanamo. We will run the petition in key US newspapers as soon as we have signatures from every country. You can sign up here:

Asalamu Alykum,

After i read your reply, it just reminded me of this story, credit to the original writer/source:

A Difference at the Beach

A friend of mine was walking down a deserted beach at sunset. As he walked along, he began to see another man in the distance. As he grew nearer, he noticed that the local native kept leaning down, picking something up and throwing it out into the water. Time and again he kept hurling things out into the ocean.

As my friend approached even closer, he noticed that the man was picking up starfish that had washed up on the beach, and, one at a time, he was throwing them back into the water.

My friend was puzzled. He approached the man and said. "Good evening, friend. I was wondering what you are doing."

"I'm throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see, it's low tide right now and all of these starfish have been washed up onto the shore. If I don't throw them back into the sea, they'll die up here from lack of oxygen."

"I understand," my friend replied, "but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. You can't possibly get to all of them. There are simply too many. And don't you realize this is probably happening on hundreds of beaches all up and down this coast. Can't you see that you can't possibly make a difference?"

The local native smiled, bent down and picked up yet another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea, he replied, "Made a difference to that one!"

There are millions of little things we can do, without taking much effort, to make this world a better place.

'Aisha (radiAllahu anha) narrated, that the Prophet was asked,
"What deeds are loved most by Allah?" He said, "The most regular constant deeds even though they may be few." He added, "Don't take upon yourselves, except the deeds which are within your ability."
[sahih al-Bukhari, 8:76:472]

For some reason i thought the story related to this.

Asalamu Alykum,

Oh.., although they are still very good stories, but you did bring up a valid point, Inshallah this will make some kind of a difference, but it can get frustrating and very angry when you see them going through all this pain and for claims which seem to be absurd. :angryred:

assalamu caleikum,

but still don't you think that WE as muslims can do something for our brothers over there??? Because i know that their conditions are realllllly horrible and unhuman!!!

Protests and marches dont do much at all in terms of changing anything, but it does show that the muslims care about whatever it is that is happening.

What can we do for them? make Du'a, it doesnt seem like much and maybe it isnt but....

Asalamu Alykum,

Well by signing the petition is one thing. Although if you mean protests/campaigns, then yes we can but i think it may get a heavy response but some people would back away at the last minute (i have that thought for some reason). I really dont know what we can dp apart from protest, unless we actually go down to Cuba, or is nobody allowed down to that area, it actually seems like were helpless in these kind of situations. One thing we can do is pray for them and Inshallah they will get through it and become stronger as the individuals in the road to guantanamo did.

Asalamu Alykum,

Yes thats correct, but with the thing in Iran, there was a big out cry, but i guess service will resume by next week, everyone will forget about GT and what they are going through and maybe some of the cases are justified as i dont want to sound to biased, but the treatment is an absolute joke thats for sure.

Asalamu Alykum,

Well i dont know, after watching the road to guantanamo and the individuals there saying they had nothing to do with any of the attacks, i may have got sucked in, but on the other hand you have the US saying they have some key suspects there i think (not 100% sure, which individuals have done what), so i sort of got the opinion the government is lying. Although Allah (S.W.T) knows best.

assalamu aleikum, the least we can do for them is to try our best and concentrate all our energy to become better muslims and pass the deen to our children inschallah and avoid repeating the same mistakes done by previous generations that somehow neglected the deen and became vulnerable to colonisations and later on more attracted by nationalist socialist or communist agendas that didn`t work at all in every aspect and that is one of the reasons of the suffering of our beloved brothers the most important thing they are teaching us somehow is that we need to build a strong ummah like it once was to stop these sort of things from happening again! inschallah am sure we can do it this is the right time and "the sun will rise from the west".:SMILY346:

Assalam alaikum,
i've just signed it and I think it is important that everyone take a stand against this unfair treatment of our brothers.
Take also a look at Amnesty Internationals own page about thier work to close down Guantanamo, and read the "prisoners" own stories.
