v) The Fingers of the Most Merciful
Allah has Fingers which in no way resemble the fingers of any of His creation. They befit His Perfection and Majesty, the All-Glory and Exalted. In the Bukhari and Muslim, it is narrated from ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ood that a Jew came to the Prophet and said,
“O’ Muhammad, Allah holds the heavens on one Finger, the earth on one Finger, the mountains on one Finger, the trees on one Finger and all creatures on one Finger, and He says, ‘I am the Soverign’”
The Messenger of Allah smiled so broadly that eyeteeth could be seen, then he recited:
They made not a just estimate of Allah such as is due to Him...
(39:67)
According to another version: The Messenger of Allah smiled in amazement and confirmation.
(Bukhari, 13,393, hadith no. 7414; Muslim, 4/2147, hadith no. 2786)
It is narrated that ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr al-‘Aas (may Allah be pleased with them both) heard the Prophet say:
“The hearts of the sons of Adam are all as one heart between two of the fingers of the Most Merciful, and He directs them as He wishes.”
Then he said:
“O’ Allah, Director of the hearts, direct our hearts towards obedience to You,”
(Muslim, 4/2045, hadith no. 2655)
