Yesterday evening started like any other evening. I left work, drove to the sitter and picked up the baby and headed home. As I was about to turn on to my street I found it blocked full of fire trucks. My heart sank and then panicked that it may be my house. I went around the block trying to gauge where the smoke was and it was coming from the area of my home. I burst into tears and was crying to God "Please God, don't let it be my house, PLEASE! What will I do?" As I rounded back to the other end of my street I parked and was able to view that it was NOT my house, but my handicapped neighbors. Both are in wheelchairs, the wife is legless. They both suffer terrible diabetes and were renting the house next door for some 22 years. They had let her 27 year granddaughter stay there with them the last few months. As it turns out she is a smoker and while the couple was away she neglected a cigarette and the only home and all the possessions, which were few including loved cats were destroyed. Can you imagine the heartbreak the couple felt as they came home and found their world destroyed? I noticed the granddaughter had no shoes on her feet and the ground was wet, so I took off the flip flops I was wearing and gave them to her......I had nothing to offer the elderly lady but a sweater to wear as it was getting chilly. In that moment I was both relieved and felt guilty. Here I was fearing it was my home and rejoiced when I realized it was not, but my neighbors were now homeless! I thanked God for all his blessings on me and my family. The neighbors on the other side of that house suffered melted siding from the heat of the fire and my house suffered NO damage whatsoever.....alhumdullilah! God is Great! Please though make duaa for this elderly couple!
