Well you would assume that all Muslims would ensure to fast on the Tuesday, well those who are capable.
But why wait, we still have a few days left, i would ensure to keep fast for the remaining days. Insh'Allah.

Is it a sun up to sun down fast or a 24 hour fast? And is it the same day in America as elsewhere? I know that Ramadan ends here one day after NY, don't know why....

Yep sun up to sun down, fajr to maghrib. You should check your local timings if you want to fast, and try to get up about 30 min before fajr time begins or so and eat suhur (pre-dawn meal) so that the fast will go easier insha'allah. you can probably find it on www.islamicfinder.com
It's the same day in America, its for the Day of Arafah, the 9th of Dhul Hijjah that we fast, it's a day of great blessing and acceptance of prayers, and fasting on that day serves as an expiation of many sins.
so its good to fast that day, as well as those before during these first ten days.

:salam2: sister there is nothing like 24 hours fasting in islam. Fasting rules are same as in ramadan.
so in winter time muslims can make profit by fasting nafal.

brother..I missed the first day too!
I got so upset about it..I was counting on the month starting on Monday..
but the hilal was witnessed on sunday..and it threw everything off
