Misunderstandings About Muhammad Bin Abdul Wahhab

Ibn_hassan

Servant of Allah
All Praise belongs to Allah Almighty, Creator of the worlds. Peace and salutations be upon the Prophet Muhammad, his family and all his Companions.

The revivalist movement begun by Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab (1115AH - 1206AH / 1703AD - 1792AD) in the Arabian Peninsula was destined to take root and become widely accepted. It sowed the seeds for a wise leadership which pledged upon itself the implementation of Islamic Shariah in its totality, using the Book of Allah and the Sunnah to enlighten all its activities. It was honoured with victory and success from Allah, the Almighty, and so has remained a potent force since its inception two centuries ago, despite severely hostile attacks on both religious and political levels. The movement exceeded the boundaries of the Arabian Peninsula and bore fruit in a number of other countries in the hands of many sincere scholars and propagators of Islam who were inspired by its teachings and guided by its example. It was a blessed movement, like a good tree, the root of which is firm, and the branches of which stand tall in the sky.

But like any reformatory movement, it too faced an onslaught of arrows, thrown both at the founder of the movement and at his beliefs and teachings. For a start, it was given the derogatory title of Wahhabism which, although unacceptable to its founder and followers, was nevertheless widely accepted and adopted. Worse still, the State was subjected to strong criticisms and dreadful slanders in the most vulgar language, which exposed the measure of animosity felt by its opponents. Such critical writings had a great appeal among those fond of innovations and superstitions, but a host of knowledgeable people from various Muslim countries stood up to refute each and every allegation, using convincing proofs and evidences, and fragmenting all the attacks into particles of scattered dust. As most of these writings, whether positive or hostile, are extant in Arabic works, it was felt that there was no need to repeat them here. So the author of this paper searched for other writings on the subject in English or Urdu, and chose a few of them to mention in this paper. He has endeavoured to refute all the doubts which were raised in the books in question in the light of the writings of Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab and all the scholars who defended him at home and abroad..

Bro what do you mean by wahabi. There nothing called wahabism it is just a term used by the western media to divide the muslim ummah. As it says in the biography muhammad abdulwahab was a scholar who called the people back to tawheed and reformed the religion after theere were so many innovations practiced. From your words I understand you refering to saudi arabia but the ottoman empire was the main and the last government of islam so we should all like because we as muslims where the leaders and the superpower.

After reading my post found on the above link, I hope you'll realise -brother Turk Gumption- that I'm very fond of the Ottoman contributions to the Islamic Civilization.

That being said, Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhaab called for the return to pure monotheism, and many Muslims -even in Arab countries and the Arabian peninsula itself- fell into practices that cause one to direct his or her worship to other than Allah the Almighty. So, it's not that his call was against the Ottomans as much as it was against these wrong practices that were rampant in both the Ottoman Empire and other Muslim lands.

You also have to remember that the revolt which happened in the Hijaaz area and in other parts of the Arab world was fueled mainly by Arab nationalism. And Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhaab did not advocate Arab nationalism.

On a final note, I think it's pretty common knowledge that the founding of the Saudi State had a lot to do with the call of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhaab. There was the First, Second and the Third [present day] Saudi State.

The following is the family tree of the House of Saud. The names in red shows the rulers of the First Saudi State, the names in blue shows the rulers of the Second Saudi State and the names in green shows the rulers of the Third Saudi State [the present day Kingdom of Saudi Arabia]:

House_of_Saud_rulers.jpg

You'll notice that the name of the first ruler of the Second Saudi State is "Turki".

Do you know what Turki means in Arabic?

It means "Turkish".

Here was a member of the House of Saud who carried the name Turki [i.e., Turkish]. His father might have even lived during the life of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhaab. If Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahaab and his followers did not like the Ottomans [who were Turkish], why would one of them be given a name meaning "Turkish"?

And this name is even found today. You have Turki ibn Faisal. He's the son of the late King Faisal ibn Abdul Aziz [may Allah have mercy on him]. He was Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to the United Kingdom and then to the United States of America.

Now, I have discovered that wikipedia is not that reliable of a source, but I believe the following information could be very true. I was happy to read it, and I hope that you -brother Turk Gumption- will also be happy:

In addition, "Turki" was used as an adjective by Bedouins in the Najd region of Saudi Arabia meaning "handsome", as Turkish people were considered handsome. Thus, they named their kids "Turki", hoping their kids to be handsome. Turki is a popular name now in the Gulf States, especially Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.[citation needed]

And the Najd region [in central Arabia] was where the call of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhaab took its roots.

Dear Bluegazer brother thank you very much for your detailed posting. Inshallah i'll study more islamic scholars life story and his opinions as soon as possible. At this times i have a serious exams but again i want to write something to you.

As we see there are lots of fitnah everywhere. When i consider about my own county there are lots of mischief-makers in here. Especially secularist muslims, ignorant muslims and radical nationalist muslims have awful sense like " Arabophobia " . But what can they do ? I love all muslims as much as my essence brother. He is israeli or suudi it doesn't matter if he is introduce himself like as "i am a muslim" . And i believe it is one of my task as a believer to love other muslims.

Beside i also heard about an Ottoman castle in Suudi Arabia destroyed by Wahhabist administration. And again i heard they destroy lots of Sahabies tomb..

If you enlighten to me about that things i'll be so glad to you.

M'selam...
