Asalam alaikum,

I would like to know if entering a Synagogue is bad or good. This Friday I'm graduating from high school alhamdulilah, but the ceremiony will be held in a Synagogue (Jewish Temple). I'm not Jewish and I don't know alot about it but is there something I should say before entering such a place inshallah?
A certain prayer or something? Do Muslims hate Synagogue?

Thanks,

~Sakeena

I don't know what to tell you sister. Muslims do not hate anyone. Going to sinagogue is not some bad think as long as you don't follow them in rituals. Understanding that it's your graduation ceremony, you can be there but be what you are, and besides, you'll get chance to see how that people preform prayer, if there is any... You can compare that later on with Islam and get a conclusion that there is no other religion acceptable from God than Islam, and we are most cleaner people ( entering the mosque, masdjeed without shoes, taking ablution before prayer, wich they don't do )

Also, if the time of salah occurs , you can pray there. It's narrated that khalifah Omar ibn Al Hattab and sahabas r.a. ,were praying in church in Jerusaleem, until they got a mosque. Make sure you have sutra ( something you are going to put in front of you while preforming prayer. It could be some purse..etc...but the wall is the best, so that no one can walk before you while praying.

Attending Graduation Ceremonies
Is participating in graduation ceremonies haraam?

Praise be to Allaah.

If the graduation ceremony included disobedience, it becomes haram to attend or witness. Some of the common disobedience that takes place in these ceremonies: Music and the marching of the graduates to it; Uncovered women and mixing with men; the graduation dress which is in imitation of disbelievers (such as church dress). And Allaah knows best.

Sister i'm thinking on salah that you must pray daily ;) It can be, duhr, asr, or maghreeb prayer ( i don't thing it's going to be held latter than that )

Surta, is some thing that you put in front of you while praying. Like, if you pray in the park you have to have something before you. Eighter it's your purse, some box, anything that does't lay flat on floor.

For entering , there is no prayer that i know, but normaly you should say:

Auzu billahi minesh-sheytanir-radjeem
Bismillahir-rahmanir-raheem

But just in case, wait for what massi is going to post here, so that we can be sure what is right. To be honest i'm concern about it because i know that, jews drink alcohol, and sing and dance there. What's more scary to me is, that we all know that they say that Ezra is son of God nauzubillah, and they may sing something about him, and muslim can't stay cool about that.

Attending the graduation ceremony at an American university
I would like to know the Islamic Rulling of attending the Graduation Ceremony at an American University. I am a doctoral student at an American University and I am planning to graduate in the end of this term Spring 2001. I know it is optional to attend this event, however it is very important for doctoral students and their advisors to attend. At these ceremonies, the students must were what so called CAP and GOWN, and I do not know what the historical background of these types of clothing.

Praise be to Allaah.

If attendance is optional, do not attend, so as to be free from imitation of the kaafirs in wearing this dress which is unique to them, and also to avoid the evils that are usually present in such celebrations.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4031, from the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him), and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.

It is weird that this is at a synagogue for sure! I don't think there is a problem entering a synagogue as long as you do not participate in their rituals as previously stated. I enter a church for interfaith dialogues and dawa and we muslims even choose a corner away from everyone do to our prayers.

Also, for those living in Islamic countries, is the cap and gown for graduation ceremonies limited to Western countries only? I was unaware that there was any connection between cap and gown and religious attire? Just asking.... what are the practises in Islamic countries for graduations from college, etc...? :)

1- Is it permissible to go into churches for the purpose of da’wah, or just to look around?
There are many churches here. Is it permissible to go into them to hold discussions with the priests there? Is it permissible to go in just to look at them and see what the people do there?

Praise be to Allaah.

It is permissible for scholars and knowledgeable people to enter churches in order to call the people there to Islam. But we should not enter them just to look around, because there is no benefit in doing so, and there is the fear that the Muslim may be influenced by them, especially if he is ignorant about his own religion and cannot refute the confusion that they will direct towards him.

I'm going to graduate, nothing more. I'm not of any Jewish heritage or family... my school has a HUGE Jewish population, but I still don't understand why not a stadium or some place nnon-religious? Jews take up like 70% I guess, Christians are 28% and the other 2% are Muslim, Hindu, etc. I'm just graduating inshallah. That's all :)

Jazak Allahu Khair, brother Massi. No worries here, going for the purpose of dawa only! I had enough Catholic church exposure in my youth to last a lifetime so there is no curiosity from that standpoint:) A group of us Muslims attend Interfaith dialogue and Masha Allah, there are some Christians who attend who are extremely interested in learning more about Islam. We are there to spread good tidings of Islam. Masha Allah, we have a talented educated brother in our community and when he tells stories about Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, it has even brought Christians to tears.

Just with little sister Sakeena, in her own situation (she is the young girl - 18 - with the mother who is so opposed to her being muslim).... I hope that she may be allowed to attend her highschool graduation and seek refuge in Allah from Satan with these words:
Aoothu billahi meena Shaytani arajeem.

I think if she tells her mother she will not attend her graduation, and I imagine her mom is a single mom as there is no mention of dad, that it would crush her mother who worked hard to put her through school and this in turn would further alienate her mother from Islam and her daughter. But this is just my own thought having been in touch with Sister Sakeena before and may Allah forgive me for any wrongdoing.

This is just my opinion in this unique situation and of course,

Allah knows better than any of us will ever know :)

Salaam,

Congratulations sister Sakeena! May Allah give you the best of this world and the next.

I've never heard of a graduation at a specific holy site especially with a school that has diversified beliefs. This is very strange. Only thing I can think of is that it's probably cheap to rent rather than a banquet hall or stadium.

Thanks TheHumbleWun lol  hahaha! ooh yes my mom is a single mom, my dad, je doesn't speak to us. SubhanAllah :( so my mom feels I'm not making things any easier for us by standing sides with Islam and favoring "anotheer God" other than Jesus (PBUH).. sigh..:girl3:

Salaam sister Sakeena,

Don't be sad. Be optimistic. This should be one of the happiest days of your life! You've accomplished something that many people in the world can't even afford or lack resources. May Allah bless you and continue to attend college, get your masters, doctors. We have to be examples for others - and show that we Muslims are knowledgeable and have high standards.

Congrats on your graduation again :SMILY47:
