Pak journalist in US jail on terrorism charges

By Khalid Hasan

WASHINGTON: Nayyar Zaidi, the well-known US-based Pakistani-American journalist, who has been a citizen of the United States for more than 30 years has been in US custody for the last four months on what are said to be terrorism-related charges.
According to one report, Zaidi is being held on the charge of “obstruction of justice”, a very serious offence. He is also said to be awaiting a trial.
The Homeland Security Department or the FBI have made no announcement about his arrest or incarceration. His family, when asked for his whereabouts, has continued to claim that “he is in Pakistan”. The Pakistan embassy, like Zaidi’s journalist colleagues, who have repeatedly phoned the family, has also been given the same answer. When asked why he is in Pakistan and what has taken him there or how long he is to be away, the callers have been told, “We cannot say” or “We do not know.” The news of Zaidi’s arrest – he is believed to be in an Ohio prison – was broken by the New Jersey-based website Des Prades at the weekend.
However, there is a history to this story. On Feb. 20, 2003, Zaidi was visited by three FBI agents at his residence in Prince County, Virginia, while he was away from home. The three agents tried to interrogate Zaidi’s 15-year old son Zain Zaidi, who immediately phoned his father but by the time he got home, the agents were gone, leaving a phone number that they said he should reach them at. When Zaidi called that number, he was asked to come over to the FBI’s Washington field office and asked several questions about his personal, social and religious activities. The agent questioning him, also asked him to bring his phone notebook with him because of an FBI claim that Zaidi’s home phone had been used for making calls to 10 numbers in Pakistan, China, India, the Netherlands and Thailand. Those numbers, an agent by the name of Chris MdKinney, added, were under investigation for links to the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Two of the numbers – one in Pakistan and the other in China – that they claimed had been called from Zaidi’s phone respectively were (9221) 2633066 and 86-51081254. The Pakistan number, Zaidi told the FBI, bore similarity to a fax number that he often called in Karachi to file his news and other reports.
Zaidi has filed for the Jang Group of Newspapers for more than 25 years. The Pakistan phone number was officially investigated by Pakistani authorities, which found it to be the disconnected number of a textile company that had gone bankrupt. When Zaidi asked to be given other numbers that had allegedly been called from his phone, the request was refused. Zaidi offered to cooperate with the FBI but refused to hand over his phone notebook or any records unless the agents came up with legal grounds to make such a demand. He was left alone until August 8, 2003 when two different FBI agents came to his home while he was away. When he called them on August 11, leaving three messages, his calls were not returned. The embassy also took up the issue of this FBI intrusion with the State Department, which promised to look into the matter. Nothing more was heard of it till Zaidi’s mysterious disappearnce in late March this year.

i would like to remind you wht are islamic teachings on this issue

"Why is it that when the Muslims of the 21st century hear that there has been an earthquake in Indonesia, Pakistan or a Tsunami along the borders of Asia but do not feel pained? When they hear of such atrocities or sufferings happening to their beloved Muslim brothers across the world there is no shared grief or significant compassion? Why is it that today when we hear that our Muslim brothers and sisters around the world are being tortured mercilessly, their land and posessions destroyed/occupied; their children are being killed/enslaved in poverty and human rights are being annihilated, that we feel no pain?

While we are living and enjoying the comforts and luxuries of the 21st century, our brothers and sisters are being oppressed all around us. It has become such that we have become immune to hearing such afflictions. It has become such that we find it hard to shed even one tear.

My dear readers, whoever you are and wherever you are, have we forgotten the Hadith of Rasullullah ?

Rasullullah giving an example of Muslim unity is reported to have said in a Hadith:

“The Muslim Ummah is like one body. If the eye is in pain then the whole body is in pain and if the head is in pain then the whole body is in pain”

So we the Muslim Ummah, whatever colour, nationality or gender, wherever we are, are like this body. If we hear that any part of this Ummah is being oppressed, then we should feel this pain.

My dear readers, our oppressed brothers and sisters are crying out for help. They find that the Muslims of the 21st century are asleep and there is no one to help them. The reason why we the Muslims are collapsing is because we do not have any love amongst us. We harbour hatred for one another and our worldly matters and materialistic pursuits have taken over our lives.

Have we forgotten the beloved companions radiyallaho anhum of Rasullullah ? Have we even realised that they were of different colours and backgrounds. Hazrat Bilal was from Ethiopia , Hazrat Salman was of Persian decent, Hazrat Suhaib was from Rome and Hazrat Abu Zar was from Gifar.

They used to love each other more than real brothers. These were the Sahabas.

When Rasullullah made the Hijrah to Madinah, amongst them was Hazrat Abdur Rahman .

Rasullullah had just established peace between Hazrat Abdur Rahman and Hazrat Sa'ad Radhiallaho Anhu of Madinah. Rasullullah tells Sa'ad to take Hazrat Abdur Rahman as his brother. Hazrat Sa'ad says to Hazrat Abdur Rahman, “O Abdur Rahman, I am one of the richest men of Madinah, take half of my wealth and do whatever you want to do with it. I have two wives, take a look at them, whichever one pleases you, I will divorce her so that you can marry her.”

This is the love that the Sahaba had amongst them. Can we find any two people in the world like this today? And this is the love that Islam is asking from all the Muslims around the world today.

Has the time not come for all of us Muslims to unite again? The unity, which our Prophet has taught us, the unity that the Sahabas had, the Unity of Islam.

Assuming this is sarcasm and that you're not on crack, I agree that this is the usual stance that most in the Western world have regarding Pakistan.

Why are you being prejudiced againts fellow Muslims. It does not mean that just because the FBI are after him, he is actually a bad person. Rassulullah always reminded us to never prejudge a person. There are many prisoners in Guantanamo Bay who are kept there without committing any crimes. They are not given any legal access to any legal help.
Just hope that none of us become victims. May Allah protect us and keep us from harm's way.

that was a sarcasm which only ppl understood.

They have also captured a doctor named Aafia Siddiqui in 2003. It has been confirmed last week by Yvonne Ridley that she is the prisoner number 650 in Bagraam jail. She has been given a lethal torture. Read here Www.kadnan.com/blog

May ALLAH have his curse on these sold out persons.

FYI, im pakistani my self by the way and really pissed off because of the recent steps being taken by pakistani govt. They have even sold Embassador of Afghanistan to USA. What a shame.

The article is good by the way.

Please do not blame the peoples of a nation because of the government. I have lived in the West all my life...my heart is still...dil dil Pakistan. Americans are not bad people and if they only knew the level of corruption of the government they would die.
We can make dua and educate people to see the reality. By your response you have done just that. You have given us yet another segement of the truth.

:salam2:

I agree with u completely!!!

People are suffering due to the government. Do you know the electricity problems that occur during the daytime are deliberate. So that the government can keep control. It's a stupid idea as consequently factories are going out of business and it only worsens the country's economic status.
