Does the Quran have contradictions?

As'salamu alaikum dear brothers and sisters,
I had read a few weeks ago that the Quran does in fact contain contradictions. Isn't the Quran supposed to be perfect with no doubt? I really need some explanations as to why the Quran will say one thing and in another part it will say something different. Is there a logical explanation? This is one thing that turned me away from being a Christian and coming to Islam. The contradictions of the Bible are very clear. Thank you all so much. :tti_sister:

As-salaamu `alaykum sister.

No there aren't any, Allaah says in Surah An-Nisaa, the 4th chapter of the Qur'aan,

"Have they (the disbelievers) not considered the Qur'aan? Had it been from other than Allaah, then surely there would be therein, many contradictions."
An-Nisaa' : 84

All of those so-called contradictions that the non-Muslims rant and smile about, only further prove the beauty of the Qur'aan, and their own (often shameful) ignorance. So for example, some of them sat that when Allaah refers to Himself as We in the Qur'aan, that it opposes tawhid (the oneness of Allaah), and that it supports the trinity?! However, anyone with knowledge of language (in general, not neccesarily Arabic) knows that it is the "royal-We", the use of a first-person, plural pronoun indicating one's grandeur and exaltedness. There are many examples sister, this being a common misconception for non-Muslims especially. So don't listen to the sayings of those who say that there are contradictions in the Qur'aan, rather pay attention to seeking knowledge and then inshaa' Allaah, you'll see how wrong and futile their claims are.

Hope it helps,

Was-salaam

walekom as salaam sister,
alhamdulillah ! the quran is the complete book of guidence for mankind.each word is a revealed word.it was sent down to prophet muhammad (pbuh) through the angel jibrael.
Allah almighty has himself taken the responsibility of preserving the QURAN and he says,
"surely,we have revealed this reminder (dhikr) and lo,we verily are its guardian."(15:9)this verse clearly mentions that allah revealed the quran and he will protect it.
sister now first of all where did u read that quran infact contains contradictions ?
secondly,when u read the holy quran read it in context,that is most important.
and thirdly sister have u come accross any verse personally ? if yes then please mention the verse.so that brothers and sisters can help u clear ur doubt inshallah.
may allah bless with correct guidence,ameen.

I used to read the Quran with a critical eye for some period of time and i could not find one clear, unequivocal contradiction that was plain and unexplainable(like the countless found in the scripture) so maybe you can post some. Remember most of the problems arise from not Understanding the context of a verse, the capturing of the certain subtle element of the Arabic Language, and not having having proper training tafsir or exegesis.

If any Contradiction did exist the enemies of the Prophet would have certainly found it. They had 23 years to simply point it out to the Prophet Mohammed(pbuh) and prove his claim of prophethood wrong in an instant. But what did they do instead? They tirelessly engaged him in wars for years,spending thousands of money to fuel it when they could have simply exposed these so-called contradiction. See what i mean..
The historical argument is a very powerful one to make..

Assalamoalaikum, Brother you reminded me of one the languages i've learned urdu were we use 'hum' which means 'we' instead of 'main' i.e. 'I'. And they were used by kings in india during the mughal era. Anyways it portrays the royalty in the sentence.

To the thread creator. You know what get quran with tafseer(Interpretation of the Meanings of THE NOBLE QUR'AN.. By Dr. Muhammed Muhsin Khan ) and READ IT WITH ALL YOUR HEART rather than trying to find putdown Islam with your findings. And you'll find the "contradictions" flowing away from your mind. Umm.. This is what i heard recently from a brother who reverted to Islam. "If you want to learn about Islam go to a muslim and if you want to learn about christianity go to a christian and not the opposite." Jazakallahu khair.

No sister, i'm afraid there is no explanation. But thats only due to the fact that theres nothing to explain! Trust me, im the type of person that won't follow his parents religion only because he was born in it. I myself looked for these things in the Quran---and guess what, im still a Muslim. :)

Quran may be in an interesting and yet difficult read espicially for a person who is not familiar with it. Thus it is very important to also pay attention to the tafseer, because it explains the meanings of the verses, under what context it was revealed, etc....

There is no contradiction. Clear cut :D

sister, one thing that some people do not understand about the quran is that it was revealed over a period of 23 years. it was divinely revealed and completed before the death of our beloved prophet :saw:. which is in contrast to most of the biblical writing or any other scripture for that matter, for they were written well after and no one can really claim authorship. one must understand that since the quran was revealed in 23 years that not everything was revealed all at once. an example i can give would be the case of alcohol. at one time alcohol was halal or at least makruh, we were able to drink it, buy it, sell it and do whatever we pleased with it. eventually it would be revealed that it would become haram. this isn't a contradiction, because the revelation was still in progress. but before the prohibition came down, the prophet :saw: said that ALLAH SWT was hinting to him something about alcohol.he warned that whoever can make benefit of alcohol to do it then while it was still okay to have it. islam always prepares you for the next step. if alcohol had been made haram from the outset, we would only have a handful of followers today. but when it was gradually entered in, the hearts of the believers were strong and they were ready and willing to give up alcohol. they understood that they could no longer drink it, buy it, sell it etc. and were willing to miss out without having any regrets.

also, don't get tripped up in language, especially an english translation of the quran. that's why it is so important for all muslims, including myself to familiarize ourselves with the arabic language, because there are certain idioms that can only be understood when one speaks that language. i have scoured the quran and have not been able to find contradiction. i have only found truth in it. not all of that truth is easy to accept either, because many of the prohibition force me to challenge my desire, but i am a muslim, therefore ALLAH SWT tells me to submit, so i do alhamdulliah.
:wasalam:

The Quran sets the Challenge

"If the mankind and the jinns were together to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they helped one another." (Quran 17:88)

"And if you (Arab pagans, Jews, and Christians) are in doubt concerning that which We have sent down (i.e. the Quran) to Our slave (Muhammad Peace be upon him ), then produce a surah (chapter) of the like thereof and call your witnesses (supporters and helpers) besides Allah, if you are truthful. (Quran 2:23)

Or do they say: "He (Muhammad(Pbuh)) has forged it?" Say: "Bring then a surah (chapter) like unto it, and call upon whomsoever you can, besides Allah, if you are truthful!" (Quran 10:37-38)

Or they say, "He (Prophet Muhammad(Pbuh)) forged it (the Quran)." Say: "Bring you then ten forged surah (chapters) like unto it, and call whomsoever you can, other than Allah (to your help), if you speak the truth!" (Qur'an 11:13)

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Contradictions of quran or hadiths are nothing but a misunderstanding of people, as for each person has a different way of thinking, thats all.. But Quran itself is perfect as well as Hadiths.
People must know that Quran is a science just like biology or physics that only those who are specialized in can interpret or explain.. Arab people who existed at the time of prophet Muhammad didnt need interpretation or explaination to most of the quran because they spoke the language as it is and they knew exactly what most of the words ment, unlike now adays where even most of arabs cant actualy read arabic right.

Pls mak Duwa 4 me
Salamalaykum,

Sister as many brothers and Sisters hav already explained and cleared above and i hope ur doubt is cleared by now insha Allah.

Sister about the link u hav posted here if u c in all the links they hav used and typed they all are of out of context u can just check by ur self, Take Quran and check the verse IN CONTEXT then sister insha Allah u will clear ur doubt by urself insha Allah.

only think is sister there can be differance in EXPLANATIONs by different people as some may think some thng in some way and some may thing same thing in some different way. so it may be some differance in EXPLANATIONS. But there is NO CONTRODICTION IN QURAN.

Sister its always good to ask and clear our doubts for the sake of Allah then to keep them in it with us. But always our iman should be stronger then our doubt as Shaitan will try his best to mislead us and he will try to mislead us in each and every step as he made promise to Allah that he will mislead us. So we should be carfull and if any doubt come we should clear it by thinking its only a fitnaah by shaitan in me, then insha Allah Allah will take us out from this fitnaah very easyly and firmly insha Allah.

May Allah give us strength to follow and understand islam properly and keep us firm on it and make our end on Islam. Ameen.

Anti - muslim site that takes a lot of verses out of context - secondly the site probably didnt read the Arabic text but a translation and all muslims know that the transaltion is not the real Quran. So if anybody wants to criticize the Quran its best to do it to the Arabic text not the english translation.

I and many Muslims use the translation because we dont know that arabic but we do get the overall meaning of the Quran, which is the whole point of reading the translation so we get an idea of what the Quran is saying. However the real Quran has always been and always will be in Arabic.

peace.

As Salaam Alaykum Sister,

I checked the "contradictions" that the site quotes...

And SubhanAllah! to refute them we don't even need anything more than copy-pasting from the explanations of the verses from Tafsir Ibn Kathir...

Below is just one example...you can complete excercise for rest of them inshaAllah (You can download from here )

"Contradiction" from the website
====================================================================================

#2 Is it OK to drink alcohol? Yes No

16:67
And of the fruits of the date-palm, and grapes, whence ye derive strong drink and (also) good nourishment. Lo! therein is indeed a portent for people who have sense.

2:219
Strong drink and games of chance. Say: In both is great sin.

=======================================================================================

Quote from Tafsir Ibn Kathir (only color coding by me :))
=======================================================================================
﴿سَكَرًا وَرِزْقًا حَسَنًا﴾

(strong drink and a goodly provision.) Ibn `Abbas said: "Strong drink is the product of these two fruits that is forbidden, and the good provision is what is permitted of them.''

=======================================================================================

So we ask how is this contradiction ?
The ayah merely says that there two things in dates and grapes:

1. The strong drinks. < Referring to intoxicating drinks made from made from them
2. The good provision <--- Referring to the fruits themselves.

Also, one more point is that Quran was revealed in stages, and so was Alcohol forbidden in stages...

And Allah knows best!
