Disposal of "Mohammad"

(I picked my thread title, because I knew people would read it!)

My husband has a remaining gift from his ex-in-laws that we don't know what to do with. His ex-in-laws came from a large family, and it was their family tradition to always give gifts with the family name on it (you know, welcome mats, coffee mugs, wall plaques, garden signs - those types of decorative things).

Well, my husband has still left-over, a floor mat with his family name on it (that he has never allowed to be put on the floor) - his family name is simply Mohammad. So, he has a floor welcome mat that just says "MOHAMMAD" on it.

Obviously, we will never put it on the floor (my husband hid it when his ex left, because he was afraid she would see it and would be reminded to take it, and then possibly actually use it as a floor mat).

So what do we do with it? It is a true, heavy duty floor mat, so it would look horrible as a wall-hanging (one suggestion I had previously received), and besides, I don't really want it in my home because it was a gift from the ex-in-laws.

There is no place in Kuwait that we can donate it, and besides, my husband is afraid that someone will actually use it as a floor mat (and therefore, will be wiping their shoes and feet on the name MOHAMMAD).

Any advice of what to do with it?

Lana

That's strange...why would these people put that name on a floor mat?!!!

People do some really weird things sometimes...

Anyway...

I have two suggestions...

1. If you are able to cut through it...go in and cut the name out...and then just practically shred that part to small pieces with the scissors...

2. Take it out to a near by park...city limits..place of the sort..and just burn it...

I think these are the best ways to take care of it...I personally prefer suggestion # 2 because that way you make sure that NOTHING of it is left..but see what is more convenient for you :)

Care should have been taken while designing and buying such mats.

I think the best way is to wrap it up and put it in store (yeah it will be in your home. Hold it for ALLAH?). I dont think giving it to any one is better in this situation.

First of all, The name "Muhammed" doesnt nessecerly refer to our Prophet beace be upon him. Unless theres a "peace be upon him" or "Salla Allahu Alaihi Wasalam" or "Rasolul-Llah" or something like that next to it.

Besides, No matter what name is written on it, it is still insulting to the name to be written on a mat where people step on by their feets.

So you can either store it or burn it.

If you live in Kuwait there are 100 of Islamic Orgnizations, specially the one who help to make Dawah, explain to them what is the situation, or let your husband take it to Imam of a Masjied and he will tell you what to do with it.

Just store it in the attic or garage, but wrap it in a plastic bag so you wont get any dust on it.

i don't think that the floor mat was designed by a devout muslim. it's intended purpose was to have the name of the person or family on it as a decoration and as a sign that someone has indeed approached the right home.

the question that i have is this: is the name Mohammad sacred? we the know and love our Prophet :saw: and know that he was chosen, but is the name sacred? i ask this because i've read the many replies given here and so many people were like " store it " " burn it " , " wrap it " etc. so i began to think if we're going to give a floor mat such importance or treat it with such a high level and we become confused as what do with a floormat, isn't that like bid'aa?

think about it, if your child's name was Muhammad, and you were teaching him how to write his name and in the process he made many mistakes on the paper such as bad spelling, bad penmanship, scribbles etc. and eventually he writes his name: Muhammad correctly on the same paper. are you going to shred that paper later on or burn it? no because it's trash and not sacred even if his name is Muhammad.

my point is that this thing is a dumb floor mat. it doesn't imply that the door mat was made to honor the best creation that ever lived: MUHAMMAD :SAW:

so i don't think you should worry.

I think the main reason for their reaction is to the associations with that name, alot of people think of our Nabi (saw) when it comes to that name so thats why its better to properly dispose it :)

Exactly!

We connect the name *Mohammad* to the Prophet (pbuh)...it's just an automatic mental thing...I mean if any of us were walking up to a door and they see a floor mat with *Mohammad* on it..they'll just get the shivers..and might go around it..and avoid stepping on it..it's just a reaction due to the endearment we have towards Rasuluallah (pbuh)..not because the name *itself* is sacred

The sister also indicated that *she personally* does not want it around as it is a gift from her husband's ex-in laws...so there is a personal preference involved in the issue as well..and we need to mind this..

Maybe she'll come up with something and tell you us about it later inshallah :)
