The Prophet Muhammad :)saw:) said that angels on't enter houses that have dogs and/or pictures of things with souls in them. I would say it's best not to have one. Maybe it's Makrooh (disliked) but not Haraam.

ALLAH HU AKBAR
Assalamu Alaykum,

The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade keeping dogs as well as selling and buying them.

Ibn Qudâmah said in his book al-Mughnî (volume 4 page 281): “It is unlawful to keep dogs for other purposes than hunting, herding or farming”.

Therefore, a Muslim may not keep a dog except for a dire need such as protection if one’s house in a remote place away from other people. If a blind person needs to have a dog as a guide or for protection, then that would also be permissible.

A Muslim should not play with dogs. The saliva of a dog is impure (najas). The way to remove this impurity is to wash the affected are seven times, one time with dirt. It does not matter whether the contaminated area is a dish, an article of clothing, or the skin. A person who comes in contact with the saliva of a dog must purify the affected area correctly in order for him to be able to perform prayers.

Assalamu Alaykum sister,

These two hadith are in Sahih Muslim Abu Huraira reported the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) to have said: When a dog licks a utensil belonging to any one of you, (the thing contained in it) should be thrown away and then (the utensil) should be washed seven times.

also,

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: The purification of the utensil belonging to any one of you, after it is licked by a dog, lies in washing it seven times, using sand for the first time.So what should be done to cleanse something is to clean the item first time with the Earth and remaining seven times with water. This makes the item taharah (clean).

Wasalam.

Thanks. I have a friend that is blind and has a guide dog. I will let her know that information.

I understand now it is only acceptable to have a working dog, not just as a pet. All animals on this earth were created with a purpose. We still have to give them that purpose. There also are some people that abuse them by selling them and you have no idea how bad this epidemic is in the USA. I sometimes volunteer at the animal shelter where I live. There are at least 10 new dogs a week in facility that contains 100 animal cages. If these dogs don't find a home, they are put to sleep. They on average kill about 20-50 animals a month. It is really sad that we can't take care of our animals and give them a purpose to live. Thanks for the information on washing 7 times. I know now what to do when I come back from volunteering at the shelter.

Salaam Aliqum I was wondering what shelter you volunteer at. Do they list pets at petfinder.com. I applauded you for the good work you do may Allah reward you for you are being kind to a beeing that cannot express and is depended to us humans.

Animal Shelters

Yes they do sometimes list their animals on petfinder.com. Most animals that are adoptable can be found on your local shelter city's website. I live in Dallas and their are many in the area where I live. If you want to help out at a shelter, you can call them and arrange volunteer training. Most of them do training on Saturdays.

guard dogs

It is also permitted that a dog be kept as a guardian, or a watch dog. Much has been said about dogs. So, yeah, a toy poodle kept as a pet is probably not a good idea.
But even these dogs were bred for a purpose. Daschaunds, and schnaussers were bred small and mean in order to hunt vermin. It is probably the same with all small dogs. There is definitely a cultural issue here. I owned dogs before I became a Muslim.
Inshallah, I will not own any more after these are gone, but I feel a sense of obligation to keep them. Two are large breed dogs who guard the home. One is a smaller dog who is an excellent birder (hunting dog).
That brings in a question of my own. Dogs are allowed for hunting. If my dog retrieves a downed bird, does that make the meat of the bird haram? Or is it still halal, even though a dog has had it?

I hope this answers your question a hadith from Bukhari

Volume 7, Book 67, Number 386:
Narrated Adi bin Hatim:
I said, "O Allah's Apostle! We let loose our trained hounds after a game?" He said, "Eat what they hunt for you." I said, "Even if they killed (the game)?" He replied, 'Even if they killed (the game)." I said, 'We also hit (the game) with the Mi'rad?" He said, "Eat of the animal which the Mi'rad kills by piercing its body, but do not eat of the animal which is killed by the broad side of the Mi'rad.''

I dont know what a Mi'rad is though, my guess would be an arrow though.
