As Salamu Alaykum,

While reading a thread in the lounge about who has the greater rights parents or husbands concerning their wives, Sister Al-faju posted a fatwa which she had read on Islamqa.

First, I use McAfee Site Adviser and the results for that site were mostly designated as dangerous for virus, spyware, etc.

More Importantly, who has the authority to issue a Fatwa and if the Fatwa was issued by a recognized authority should we follow it with the same obedience we should be following Al Quran and The Prophet Muhammad (Sall Allahu 'alayhi wa sallem)? Also, if the Islamic Center in my area is part of a group that is not recognized as authentic Islam practitioners, where can I find proper guidance in understanding Al Quran and what is halaal and what is haraam? The reason I mentioned Sister Al-faju's reference to Islamqa is that when I saw all the designations of a dangerous site for infections it caused me to wonder if the site is unsafe couldn't the fatwa also be unreliable?

Allah would judge people based on their intentions. As for the islamqa, if it has any erroneous fatwas Allah would judge them based on their intentions.

God gave us reason to examine logically the arguments surrounding various issues. And if you are unbiased most of the time you would find the true and authentic way. Quran and Sunnah is the basis of islam. And if you see any fatwa regarding an issue, you can have the freedom of examining them throughly with Quran as your yardstick. Then based on your judgement you can always find the right path. And again if you err in your conclusion Allah would judge you based on your intentions.

Today is the age of technology. And even if good muslims are not around in your community, you can acess them through internet, you can get authentic books which propagate true islam. We have today everything at our fingertips.

As Salamu 'Alayka, Stargazer, Shokran. I understand your explaination of the internet and books; consequently, my posting here. I had heard the word fatwa and while trying to comprehend its' meaning and understand how one should use fatwa, I came across controversy concerning fatwas. Hence, my questions. Also, I do understand that good sites can inadvertently post incorrect information or deliver virus and malware unintentionally and through no fault of its' own. I am here only to learn and share what I believe to be true and have correction when needed. I sincerely apologize if I offend anyone or am misunderstood. (Which happens often in my own language when communicating with another native speaker; therefore, I am sure that the chance of miscommunication between native speakers of multiple language is even greater. I read that there is often misunderstanding by native speakers of the same language as high as 50+%)

The site islamqa is run by a famous Scholar from Saudi Arabia. The site also uses many religious rulings (fatwas) from other notable Scholars past and present and from a large Scholarly body within Saudi Arabia. However, one must read hundreds of their answers to various questions to get a deeper understanding of the rulings and principles of Islamic Law. I found the website to be highly reliable.
