I am a recent convert to Islam. It was somewhat of a tradition in my family to get cremated. I always had that in my head that this was the best thing to do for the environment of the earth. Can you please tell me if this is allowed in Islam? Thank-you very much for your time.

Praise be to Allaah.

It must be noted that the teachings and laws of Islam came to honour people. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And indeed We have honoured the Children of Adam” [al-Israa’ 17:70]

As the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was the one who conveyed to us the laws of our Lord, he taught us what Allaah has prescribed concerning the dead, what we are permitted to do in their case and what we are not permitted to do. Hence the teachings of Islam are different from the teachings of other nations; they include treating the deceased with respect and in a manner that will benefit him. Allaah has prescribed for us that when a Muslim dies, we should wash him and cleanse him, then shroud him in a white cloth, then we should offer the funeral prayer for him and pray for mercy and forgiveness for him. Then after that we must bury him and cover him with earth, then we should visit the graves and pray for their Muslim occupants. It is not prescribed in Islam to burn or cremate the dead, rather this is an act of disrespect and dishonour. Islam forbids us to step, walk or sit on the grave of the deceased, so how could we burn him? Even non-Muslims are to be buried according to Islam, and this is what the Muslims do in the case of kuffaar who die in their countries, but the kuffaar are not buried with the Muslims in the same place. Some of the kuffaar may burn their dead because they do not believe in the Last Day. For this reason it is not permitted to burn the dead; rather it is obligatory to bury the dead. And Allaah knows best.

Can your family speak to the imam at a local mosque about getting zakat for burial?

That is waaay overpriced. They need to call more than one funeral home and tell them they need very basic coverage (cardboard/pinewood coffin) and no embalming. The max my family ever paid for burial was $5000 and that was with a fancy coffin and everything.

My cousin died in Canada. I think burial is more costly over there but I dont know for sure.

I would still call multiple funeral homes and compare prices. Even in Canada (where there is more open land) it shouldn't run that high.

Over here, it depends which province you are in. Have you talked to the Muslim Association of Canada in that city? For burial the maximum costs, I have heard, is around 3000$. So please try to reconfirm. Western Canada is cheaper than Eastern Canada, so it might vary depending on where your family lives. Talk to ISNA, ICNA or Islamic Relief in that city. May Allah Subhanahu wa Taala make things easy for you and your family. Aameen.

Responding to the question, Dr. `Abdul-Wahhab ibn Nasir Al-Tariri, former professor of Shari `ah at Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud University, Saudi Arabia, states the following:

Cremation is not allowed in Islam. Cremation is something contrary to the teachings of Islam and is a violation of Islamic law. This is based on the following Qur'anic verse in which Allah Almighty says, [Then Allah swt causes him to die, and places him in his grave] (`Abasa 80:21).

The Prophet Muhammad :saw: is reported to have said, "The way of honoring the deceased is to bury him."

Thus, it is an obligation on Muslims as a community to ensure that every Muslim who dies is properly washed, shrouded, and buried according to the teachings of Islam. The funeral prayer of the deceased should be performed after the body is shrouded and before it is taken to the grave. This is one of the rights that an individual Muslim has on the Muslim community.

So Islam is against strongly on cremation!Cremation is not allowed in Islam and is a violation of Islamic law~(`Abasa 80:21).

The next answer to your question, i gather since this involve strongly on the muslim community affair in your country and since for burial seems to be very costly for some people, i advice you for now to meet the islamic council organisation in your country as soon for help or need you to borrow first from them to make the earliest possible for the burial of your love one to take place.Because Islam did not allow to delay bury dead muslim.

IMPORTANT!Next this matter on costly burial to take place could be as a result of land shortage in your country you are advice to forward strongly this link

to your muslim council organisation in your country .This link is about some successful country adopting The kingdom of Saudi Arabia way to tackle on land shortage and such did not have hassle on costly burial in the future insya allah.
The sooner the better so please as this matter is very serious please forward to them urgently and discuss it to your respective government on behalf of our muslim community affair in your country.I understand if this matter is to take in seriously this problem of costly burial won't be a big problem in the future.
