I am not from Malaysia, but I was there a couple of months ago. I only saw Kuala Lumpur and stayed there for 6 days. I have to say I loved it. People are friendly, food and public transport is much cheaper compared to the UK and the weather is fantastic.

One place in Kuala Lumpur to stay away form is Bukit Bintang. Many holiday makers go there, but the atmosphere is highly unislamic and many thieves. As I didnt know about it, I got robbed there off my £200. I was pleased my passport was safe as I was carying it with me.

This is my view of Kuala Lumpur as a visitor, but for a better picture, hopefully someone local will give you more details on life in Malaysia.

Wa'alaykummusalaam wa rahmatullah,

I'm sorry to hear of what happened to Brother Bawar. And if you'd ask me, I would pretty much avoid Bukit Bintang because as you've rightly said, the atmosphere there is very un-islamic, you see many foreigners [very few Malaysians] and sometimes it feels like you're not in Malaysia but in Italy. Lol.

:salam2:
How does the transportation work? (Cabs,Ricshaws or etcs) I will be staying in a hotel near the well known Blue Mosque.

Well, the transports are OK even though not as good as in Japan or Singapore. At peak hours such as in the morning and evening [when people go and come back from work], you might want to avoid buses, it'll be as pack as a sardine can. The taxi is quite affordable [but more expensive than the bus, of course] but just make sure the taxi driver is using the meter scale. It starts with RM2.

Yes, we have trains to go around in the inter-city; LRT, Star, Monorail. We also have trains from the airport that go straight to the heart of the city center; KLIA Transit/KLIA Express. So you might want to take that train once when you've arrived and ready to get back.

Whenever you are at the malls where its pack with people, make sure to secure your belongings [wallet, money, passport] to avoid any unwanted situations - you know what I mean. Just to be on the safe side.

I'm not sure if I've been as much help but if you have any questions, you can ask specifically.

You'll be staying in Shah Alam, are you?

Was-salaam.

1 Malaysian ringgit = 0.204357918 British pounds
Latest Exchange Rates: 1 Pound Sterling = 4.90209 Malaysian Ringgit

So, 500 GBP = 2,451.05 MYR
if you really bring 500GBP , you already have more cash than i do

I dont mean to be funny , O Allah Forgive me.:astag:

i'm not really a shopping kinda guy....rarely buy clothes or accessories...so cant say much about it especially female stuffs. But rule no 1 for shopping that i know is never to do it at the airport unless that you are so rich that you dont know what to do with your money
Maybe you can get yourself a 'baju kurung'(google image it urself) and 'baju melayu' for your husband.

Malaysian food is too many....i dont know where to start...but i do know that eating in hotel is not the best place to do so. There are only about 7 hotels in Shah Alam that are certified with local islamic authorities Halal Certificate and only 3 of them from Jakim(official Government Islamic authority)
And only 116 hotels and resorts so far in malaysia (among thousands) that have JAKIM Halal Certificate.
The best place for tourist to start trying our food is at either PASAR MALAM or PASAR TANI and you'll at most(not at least) know 9-10% of our food insha Allah

Sister Zarah,

The food are all halaal, inshaa Allaah, so long that you go to a Malay's restaurants or Indian Muslim/Mamak's restaurants.

If you want to find cheap clothes, you'll have to know the stalls. Masjid India [Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman] in Kuala Lumpur or in Downtown, KL have cheap clothes but since it is almost Eid now, I'm not sure if you can walk properly on the streets there. There will sure be loaaads of people you can barely squeeze in!

The brother above mentioned about night stall [Pasar Malam] where you can find almost anywhere. Since its Ramadhaan now, we call it as Bazaar Ramadhaan. You can find lots of traditional food [some of our food are very sweet] so try to taste some of it :)

Accessories; basically you can try to look at Masjid India too or Petaling Street. Or go to any shopping malls [mind you even the huge shopping malls are packed with people nowadays!] and you'll easily find any scarfs, long-sleeve clothes.

As for me, I personally buy my scarfs and clothes [baju kurung is the traditional clothes for woman] back at my village, Kelantan. It is sometimes 2x cheaper than in KL. Besides, you can find many "big scarfs" here compared to in the city. So yes, of course I'd suggest you to visit Kelantan if you have the time, inshaa Allaah. :)

Btw, when are you coming here? After Eid?

Well, I hope that you'll have an enjoyable time here and get to meet the nice people around, inshaa Allaah.

if you go from KLIA to the Blue Mosque itself ,its 48.2km and the fastest time that a good cab can drive you there is insha allah 39minutes according to Google Map. if that's the case , the fare would be around rm50 at most (50 MYR = 10.18 GBP) but considering your tourist status....you might as well expect/prepare more like rm100(100 MYR = 20.36 GBP)

If you can give me the name of the exact hotel ...insha allah i can try to pinpoint the exact cost.

if u want to see a rickshaw.... Shah Alam and Kuala Lumpur is a no no :)
Both are a very modern city

If u want to experience a more traditional Malaysia.... do visit Perak and Kelantan.

nb- Kelantan is a must ( btw , i'm from Perak )
