Asalamalakum. What is the Islamic view on Taekwondo sparring? This is where two opponents fight each other (search it up if you want to get an understanding on what it is). Is it forbidden, discouraged, approved of or what? I'd like to know as I do Taekwondo lessons and am currently not sure if it is okay to participate in the sparring aspect of Taekwondo. Thanks.

Answer to your question is in these two fatwas:

http://www.islamqa.com/en/ref/4259

http://www.islamqa.com/en/ref/20198

If your sport requires you to bow down (Shirk) or hitting on face etc., it is forbidden. Please read the fatwas to know more.

Barakallahu feek!

I have heard elders say never kick a fellow human, nor slap... That leaves out very few options, I agree, but why Violence in first place. Taekwondo is not about violence. Taekwondo is a martial art, and has its value. To see a mere human hand break a strong brick, To defend oneself with no arms.. a really wise taekwondo practitioner will point out. But to average joe on street, taekwondo is fight. There are some professions where it really helps. But it will take above average human instincts to use it wisely.
You will also find people who are physically fit and mentally strong, even without Taekwondo.... So you know.
