Yes, halal gelatin exists. It's just the beef gelatin that's been taken from an Islamically-slaughtered animal. Very popular in many muslim countries.

No, gelatin is just a glutinous protein obtained from animal bones or skin. If you have ever eaten "Paya Curry", you'll have noticed that there are all those little small balls of fat swimming in the curry, and also the curry solidifies in the cold - that's because its full of gelatin from the hooves (or paya).

The reason why gelatin is so much associated with pigs is because in most Western countries, pork gelatin is the cheapest, hence manufacturers put it in all their products. But alternatives (eg. beef) exist as well.

This is what the gelatin comes from which Vegetarians/Vegans eat.
