"You are putting to shame Caliphs after you"

As-salaamu'alaykum,

If Umar encouraged others to keep track of their deeds, he certainly set a good example himself, being stricter and harsher with his own self than he was with any other person. The following saying of Umar points to the high standard of accountability that Umar had set for himself:

“Were a young goat die on the shore of the Euphrates River, I would become afraid that Allah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) would hold Umar accountable for that death.”

(Manaaqib Umar, pgs. 160-161)

According to another account, Ali ibn Abi Taalib (radiyAllaahu anh) reported that he once saw Umar riding quickly away while seated upon the saddle of a riding camel. Ali called out,

“O Leader of the believers, where are you going?”

Umar replied,

“One of the camels that was earmarked for charity broke loose and wandered away and I am going out to find it.”

Ali said,

“You are putting to shame the Khaleefahs that will come after you.”

Perhaps Ali meant that Umar was setting a precedent of doing menial tasks, a precedent that Khaleefahs who came after him would have to follow. Or perhaps Ali meant that Umar was putting future Khaleefahs to shame since not a single one of them would be able to match Umar’s dedication to his job. At any rate, Umar replied,

“O Abul-Hasan, do not put blame on me, for by the One Who has sent Muhammad :saw: as a Prophet, were the life of a young female goat to be taken by the shore of the Euphrates River, Umar would be held accountable for its death on the Day of Resurrection.”

(Manaaqib Umar, pg. 161)

Assalaam alaikum,

Brother,

In our day and time it seems this is a message that should be heard at any halakha or even khuthba. We have forgotten the need to be humble with our hands. We place importance on careers and forget that we need to pay attention to our agriculture as well. We have become so spoiled we do not remember who provides our subsistence and we pay no thanks. We live lives of ease.

May Allah reward your efforts for helping us remember.

Wa`alaykum as-salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

Umar al-Khattab radiyaAllaahu anhu was so tawaddhu` that this noble character can also be seen in his great grandson, Umar Abdul Azeez whose time of Khalifah has been said to be among the best time of Khilafah Islamiyah.

May this great examples be seen within our future generation, Ameen.

Asalamo`Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh,

JazaakAllaahu khayraa akh,

I see it this way. Muslims back then were so pious and humble that Allah blessed them with the leadership of `Umar. Muslims today, are such filthy munafiqs that Allah has imposed Adhaab on us in form of Zardaari, Karzai and Assad.

Guidance is from Allaah, we cannot do it ourselves. I pray Allaah guides and unites us upon Islam.

Walaikumassalaam wa rehamatullahi wa barakatuhu sis..

I agree at the time of Prophet(SAW) and the Sahabas, people were very pious, with immeasurable imaan.. And these days, sigh..!! Well, i was just reading Quran a few minutes back and look what i got as an answer :D

Surah 3. Verse 178 -

And let not those who disbelieve ever think that [because] We extend their time [of enjoyment] it is better for them. We only extend it for them so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment.

Surah 3. Verse 179 -
Allah would not leave the believers in that [state] you are in [presently] until He separates the evil from the good. Nor would Allah reveal to you the unseen. But [instead], Allah chooses of His messengers whom He wills, so believe in Allah and His messengers. And if you believe and fear Him, then for you is a great reward.

Surah 3. Verse 180 -
And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allah , with what you do, is [fully] Acquainted.

May Allah(SWT) increase our imaan and keep guiding us to the straight path. Ameen

Peace :)
