"Beautiful Patience"

Allah tells us in Surat al Ma`arij:

فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا

Therefore [O Believer] endure all adversity with beautiful patience.

And this is a command for us from Allah, so we must learn its meaning and try to practice it.

The phrase "sabrun jameel" is most famous from the saying of Sayidna Yaqoob alayhi salam upon hearing the news of his son Yusuf, as told in Surah Yusuf:

فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ وَاللّهُ الْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَى مَا تَصِفُونَ

"But [as for myself,] patience in adversity is most goodly [in the sight of God]; and it is to God [alone] that I pray to give me strength to bear the misfortune which you have described to me.”

Here some explanations are given as to the meaning of “sabrun jameel” and what makes it different than just any normal bit of sabr or low level of sabr:

Mujahid said: “Beautiful Patience is patience without any panic.”

Amr bin Qays said “Beautiful Patience means to be content with adversity and to surrender to the will of Allah.”

Yunus bin Yazid said: “I asked Rabiah bin Abdurrahman: ‘What is the ultimate of patience?’ He said “to be outwardly the same at the time of affliction as one was the day before it struck.” [this does not mean that a person does not or should not feel pain or anguish: patience in this instance means that one refrains from panicking and complaining.]

Commenting on the meaning of beautiful patience, Qiyas bin al Hajjaj said “the person who is suffering from some afflictions should behave in such a way that nobody is able to distinguish him from others.”

- From Ibn Qayyim’s “Patience and Gratitude”

رَبَّنَا أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا

Our Lord, Pour out patience onto us!

Aameen

When Times Get Hard, Pray

وَسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِلصَّبْرِ وَلصَّلَوٰة وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَىلْخَـٰشِعِينَ

And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah][Surah Baqarah : 45]

حُذَيْفَةَ قَالَ : كَانَ النَّبِىُّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- إِذَا حَزَبَهُ أَمْرٌ صَلَّى

Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Whenever the matter became serious the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray.”
Collected by Abu Dawud (1319) and others. Graded as being Hasan by Shaykh Al-Albani (May Allah have mercy on him)

1. Muhammad Abdur-Rauf Al-Manaawee (may Allah have mercy on him) commented on this hadeeth. He wrote the words” Whenever the matter became serious” means- If the Prophet was attacked by surprise, on the verge of being subdued or an important matter aroused which caused him to worry or feel sad.

“He (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray.” Means - He’d pray because prayer helps against the removal of all heavy blows, disasters and misfortunes. Through prayer one is seeking the assistance of the Creator who allowed it to happen. Prayer is a means to draw nearer to Allah and whoever resorts to prayer to his lord will be protected and averted from all evil. [Faydul Qadir, #6641]

2. Al-Mulla Ali Qari 1014H (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The meaning for this Hadeeth is derived from the verse “Seek help in patience and prayer” Al-Baqarah 45. [Sharh Musnad Abu Haneefah page 342 printed by Darul Kutubul Ilmeeyah Beriut Lebanon.]

3. Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) commented on this issue in his Tafseer for Surahtul Baqarah. He wrote: “The excellence of prayer is that it’s one of the things a person can seek assistance in for all matters and worldly affairs. Allah mentioned prayer and we believe with certainty that this speech is the truth. It’s been reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray whenever the matter became serious. Also this is supported by the Prophet’s action during the Battle of Badr. He prayed in the shade and appealed to his Lord for help. [Tafseerul Quran Al-Kareem Al-Fateehah-Baqarah vol 1 page 163-164]

Patience is that the heart does not feel anger towards that which is destined and that the mouth does not complain.
–Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah

Sabr is an Arabic word which comes from a root meaning to detain, refrain and stop. There is expression in Arabic, "so-and-so was killed sabran", which means that he was captured and detained until he died. In the spiritual sense, patience means to stop ourselves from despairing and panicking, to stop our tongues from complaining, and to stop our hands from striking our faces and tearing our clothes at times of grief and stress. (Patience and Gratitude Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah p.12)

Abu 'Uthman said, "The one who has patience is the one who has trained himself to handle difficulties." (Patience and Gratitude Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah p.12)

Amr ibn 'Uthman al-Makki said, "Patience means to keep close to Allah and to accept calmly the trials He sends, without complaining or feeling sad." (Patience and Gratitude Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah p.12)

Al-Khawwas said, "Patience means to adhere to the rules of the Qur'an and Sunnah." (Patience and Gratitude Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah p.12)

Another scholar said, "Patience means to refrain from complaining." (Patience and Gratitude Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah p.12)

Ali ibn Abi Talib [Radia-Allahu 'Anhu] said, "Patience means to seek Allah's help." (Patience and Gratitude Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah p.12)

A wise man said, "A man with wisdom as soon as adversity appears does that which a foolish man does after a month (i.e. he resorts to patience)." (Patience and Gratitude Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah P.30)

One of the salaf said: "Believers and unbelievers alike may have patience at a time of adversity, but only people of strong faith can have patience at time of ease."

Therefore Allah warned against the fitnah of wealth, wives and children:

63_9.png

"O you who believe! Let not your riches or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. If any act thus, the loss is their own."
(al-Munafiqun 63:9)

64_14.png

"O you who believe! Truly, among your wives and your children are (some that are) enemies to yourselves: so beware of them!"
(at-Taghabun 64:14)

The enmity referred to in these ayat is not that which results from hatred and conflict, but that which results from love and care, that might prevent parents from religious duties such as hijrah, jihad, seeking knowledge and giving sadaqah.

Instruction:
Patience is enjoined upon believers

Allah subhana wa ta'ala says in the Qur'aan:

16_127.png

"And be patient, [O Muhammad], and your patience is not but through Allah. And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire."
(an-Nahl 16:127)

52_48.png

"And be patient, [O Muhammad], for the decision of your Lord, for indeed, you are in Our eyes. And exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord when you arise"
(at-Tur 52:48)]

That which is opposite to patience is forbidden:

3_139.png

So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.
(Al 'Imran 3:139)

68_48.png

Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muhammad], and be not like the companion of the fish (Yunus) when he called out while he was distressed.
(al-Qalam 68:48)

The rewards of those who exercise patience will be doubled

28_54.png

"Twice will they be given their reward, for that they have persevered..."

(al-Qasas 28:54)

39_10.png

"...Those who patiently persevere will truly receive a reward without measure!"

(az-Zumar 39:10)

Sulayman ibn Qasim said that the reward of every deed is known, except for the reward of patience, which will be like heavy rain.
