hadith of the day thread: http://turntoislam.com/community/threads/daily-hadith.84734/ (has some beautiful hadiths within it so check it out)

BismaAllah Al Rahman Al Rahim
first of all I would like to know if we want it to be a thread in which I put hadiths on every day then make a new thread every three pages just so it won't get too full and inshaAllah we will post old threads on top just in case someone wants to go back into one. ( I am in need of your opinions/ advice so please let me know of any good ideas concerning this or help me out on getting the ahadith and Allahuma reward you for your good deeds)

As recommended by sis Janaan we will start with an Nawawi al Arb3een. I want to make it more interesting so I thought I could post a topic and we will try to get as many hadiths relating to it and each day will be a new topic, but then the question comes up should I make a new thread per topic? Should we let the topic last a week so as to get more people involved? Do you want to have a discussion afterwards? Let me know what you guys think I just want to get more people involved and interested in the posts.

Hadith: Actions are but by Intention

On the authority of Ameer ul-Mu'mineen (the Commander of the Faithful), Aboo Hafs `Umar ibn al-Khattaab radiAllaahu anhu, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam say:

"Actions are but by intentions and every man shall have only that which he intended. Thus he whose migration (Hijrah to Madeenah from Makkah) was for Allaah and His Messenger, his migration was for Allaah and His Messenger, and he whose migration was to achieve some worldly benefit or to take some woman in marriage, his migration was for that for which he migrated."

It is related by the two Imaams of the scholars of Hadeeth, Aboo `Abdillaah Muhammad ibn Ismaa`eel ibn Ibraheem ibn al-Mugheera ibn Bardizbah al-Bukhaaree and Aboo-l-Husain Muslim ibn al-Hajjaaj ibn Muslim al-Qushairee an-Naisaabooree, in their two Saheehs, which are the soundest of compiled books [i.e. the most truthful books after the Book of Allaah, since the Qur'aan is not 'compiled'].

Explanation of Hadeeth 1

This is a saheeh hadeeth that has been agreed upon by the scholars, and is collected in both the collections of al-Bukhaaree (Hadeeth No. 1) and Muslim (Hadeeth No. 1907). This hadeeth is great in its benefit and importance, and it has been said that the religion of al-Islaam revolves around it. Some of the scholars have said that it is 1/3rd of Knowledge, because the actions of man involve his heart, his tongue and his limbs, and hence the intention in the heart is 1/3rd of that. Other scholars have said that the whole religion is encompassed in three hadeeth - this one, the hadeeth "The Halaal is clear, the Haraam is clear and between them are doubtful matters...", and the hadeeth "Whoever innovates in this religion that which is not from it will have his actions rejected [by Allaah]". [Note: These other hadeeth will be covered later in shaa' Allaah]
Some of the scholars have said that this hadeeth should be mentioned at the beginning of every book, in order to establish that the seeking of knowledge is for the sake of Allaah alone, and not for anyone else.

In the hadeeth, when the Prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) says "actions are but by intention" then the 'by' here means that the acceptance and correctness of any action depends upon the intention behind it. An action which is apparently good, such as giving money in charity, will be rejected if the intention behind it is wrong, for example: to show off. Indeed, the Prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) has narrated from Allaah that if a person performs an act for Allaah's sake and also for the sake of someone else, then Allaah will reject the deed entirely and leave the whole of it for the partner that the person made. This shows us how grave the sin of shirk is - it is the only sin that Allaah will never forgive.

In the hadeeth, the words "shall have" means that the person will be rewarded for only that which he intended. So, as mentioned in the hadeeth, if a person performed the Hijrah, but did it with the wrong intention then he would not be rewarded for that action of Hijrah.
The word "actions" refers to those actions which are part of the Sharee'ah of Islaam. Thus, any action of the Sharee'ah - such as making wudoo', or ghusl, or making tayammum, or the prayer, or zakaat, or fasting, or the Hajj, or i'tikaaf in the masjid, or any other act of worship - will not be accepted and rewarded unless it is performed with the correct intention.

Summary

Everything we do has to be intended to be for Allaah, i.e., for anything we do we want to make sure that it will be acceptable to Him and will not in any way interfere with the upholding of His Deen. A good action with the wrong intention will not get us any reward in the Hereafter.

Wa`laikum salaam warahmatullaahi wabarakaatuh.

I think it would be good to have at least one long thread about something beneficial so inshaa'Allah leave it as it is and don't make a new thread for every topic. Maybe if many more decide to participate and it gets really long, then you can cut it off at the 15th hadeeth and start a new thread?

I like the idea of turning this into a dicussion maashaa'Allaah. About how long a topic should last? How about three days? A week is too long and a day is too short, so...
Inshaa'Allah it works out. And may Allaah `azza wa jalla reward with much good in dunya and aakhirah.

Another hadeeth that has to do with intention (from Riyaad-us-saaliheen):

'Abdullah bin 'Abbas (radhiAllahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allāh (sallaAllahu alayhe wasallam) said that Allāh, the Glorious, said: “Verily, Allāh has ordered that the good and the bad deeds be written down. Then He explained it clearly how (to write): He who intends to do a good deed but he does not do it, then Allāh records it for him as a full good deed, but if he carries out his intention, then Allāh the Exalted, writes it down for him as from ten to seven hundred folds, and even more. But if he intends to do an evil act and has not done it, then Allāhwrites it down with Him as a full good deed, but if he intends it and has done it, Allāh writes it down as one bad deed.” [Bukhāri and Muslim].

Walaikum Asalam Warahmmatullahi Wabarakatuh, I want to participate to in'sha'Allah. Like the sister said three days will good since it is not long or short. We should have one thread titling maybe An-Nawawi hadith day one just to ensure participant or new member that this is something continues. Perhaps it will be beneficial if we could also have discussion and a lesson learned within that three days. If possible to have also quiz or something after every five hadith bi'znillah. Jazakallahu kheyraan katheeran for the effort and may Allah swa make it possible for us to continue and benefit.

Qul HuwaAllahu Ahud!
Asalamo`Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh,

May Allah reward you abundantly for such an initiative. I say make one thread per discussion. Give it a topic. For example, this thread can be "Hadith of the day : Intentions". I think it will be easier to search it later and reviewing it. At times we forget stuff and can't remember where we read it. Also, if someone finds something related, say a week or a month later, can add to it without affecting the flow of the other hadeeth being discussed.

That's just my opinion.

Walaikum Salam Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu...

JazakAllah-o-Khair brother MutlekM and sister Janaan....may Allah S.W.T reward you with the best of everything in both the worlds ameen sum ameen...

i was thinking on the same lines as sister Seeking Allah's Mercy said that allocating a topic and then contributing Hadiths related with that topic can be more beneficial...because In Shaa Allah it helps in understanding one particular topic in depth in one go rather than coming back to it again in another Hadith...and also the fact that In Shaa Allah if later on someone needs to learn a particular topic then one can easily find it on the forum and believe me it so happens that you are looking for a particular Hadith and you can't just find it....

thats my bit of opinion...lets see Wallaho Ilm...

JazakAllah-o-Khair...

may all my sisters and brothers in Deen be in the Protection of Allah S.W.T...

But if he intends to do an evil act and has not done it, then Allāhwrites it down with Him as a full good deed, but if he intends it and has done it, Allāh writes it down as one bad deed.” [Bukhāri and Muslim].

Explanation of the above hadith:

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen says in his explanation of this hadith:
The saying of the Prophet (sallaAllahu alayhe wasallam) “Verily, Allāh has ordered that the good and the bad deeds be written down.” The writing of the good and bad deeds carries two meanings:

The first meaning: the writing in the lawh al-mahfuth (the Preserved Tablet). Allāh ta'ala has written everything in al-lawh al-mahfuth as He said,
Indeed, all things We created with predestination. (al-Qamar 54:49).
and Allāh says,
And every small and great [thing] is inscribed. (al-Qamar 54:53).
So Allāh, subhanahu wata'ala, wrote the bad and good deeds in al-lawh al-mahfuth, if the slave acts upon them, then Allāh ta'ala writes them in a manner that is in accordance with His Wisdom and befits His Justice and Grace.

So these are two writings:
1. A 'previous' writing: this is known to Allāh – 'azza wa jal – alone. Every one of us has no knowledge of what Allāh has written for him of good or bad until it actually occurs.

2. A forthcoming writing: when a person does a certain act, it is written in a manner befitting (Allāh's) Wisdom, Justice and Grace. “Then He explained it clearly” meaning, the Prophet (sallaAllahu alayhe wasallam) explained clearly how this writing takes place. He explained that when a person intends to do a good deed, but does not do it, Allāh ta'ala records for him a full good deed.

For example: a man performs wudhu in order to recite Qurʾān, but then did not do so, for him a full good deed is recorded.

Another example: a man intends to give out sadaqah (charity) and sets aside the money that he wants to give. Then he withholds and does not give this charity; it is still recorded for him as a full good deed. Likewise is the example of one who intended to pray two rak'ahs (voluntary), but then he does not pray, it is still recorded for him as a full good deed.

One may question: how is it that a good deed is recorded for him when he did not actually do the deed?

The answer: to this, we say that the favor and grace of Allāh is broad. This intention that occurred to the person (to do good) is considered as a good deed because the heart yearns; either in pursuit of good or bad. So if one is determined to do a good deed, then this is a good deed recorded for him. If he actually does it, thenAllāh records it as 10 good deeds to seven hundred folds, or even more.
This variance in the reward depends on the level of ikhlaas (sincerity) and mutaba'a(performance of the deed in accordance to the way of the Prophet (sallaAllahu alayhe wasallam). Hence, the more sincere a person is to Allāh in their acts of worship, the greater the reward. And the closer a person's worship is to the way of the Prophet (sallaAllahu alayhe wasallam), the more complete it is and the greater the reward. So the level of reward is dependent on the levels of sincerity and adherence to the way of the Messenger of Allāh(sallaAllahu alayhe wasallam).
As for the bad deed, he (sallaAllahu alayhe wasallam) said about it: “But if he intends to do an evil act and has not done it, then Allāh writes it down with Him as a full good deed.” An example of this is a man who wanted to steal, but remembered Allāh – 'azza wa jal –, was overcome by fear of Him, and abandoned stealing. In this case, a full good deed is recorded for him. Because he left an act of disobedience to Allāh, he was rewarded, as is clarified in another narration: 'for he desisted from doing it for My sake.' (Muslim). So if he intended to do commit an evil, such as backbiting, then recalled that it is forbidden and left it for the sake of Allāh, then he is rewarded with a complete good deed.
But if he actually committed the bad deed, it would be written as only one bad deed, none more.Allāh ta'ala says
Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof [to his credit], and whoever comes with an evil deed will not be recompensed except the like thereof; and they will not be wronged. (Al-An'aam 6:160).
In this hadeeth
: there is evidence that one's intention is taken into account; and that it may lead one to good.
We mentioned before that if a person intended to do evil, and proceeded with the actions that lead to this evil, but was eventually unable to do it, then the sin of the doer is recorded for him, as in the hadeeth of two Muslims who meet with their swords: 'When two Muslims fight (meet) each other with their swords, both the murderer as well as the murdered will go to the Hell-fire.' They said, 'O Allāh's Apostle! It is all right for the murderer but what about the murdered one?' he replied, “He surely had the intention to kill his companion.” (Agreed Upon).

And Allāh is the Granter of Success.

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by Sa’d while he was performing ablution. The Prophet said, “What is this extravagance?” Sa’d said, “Is there extravagance with water in ablution?” The Prophet said, “Yes, even if you were on the banks of a flowing river.”
