Question: Is Baskin Robbins halal?

Assalamu'alaykum,

So I decided to drop in to the store a few days ago, and in doing so only tempted my nephew and confused myself. I've looked all over the Internet, can't seem to find much. The store manager said she couldn't find her halal certification, thus my doubts, but said they're Halal certified in the US and are imported directly from there. Firstly, is this true? And secondly, is Baskin Robbins halal in the US?

I have dropped them an email a while ago, but no response. Any insight from US residents is sought and appreciated :)

Wa Alaikkum Asalaam sis

I don't live in the US but let me say this. I also went into McDonald's here in the UAE and all food here MUST be halal. The problem is that ALL McDonalds products are maunfactured in the USA and exported to all over the world. This is worrying as we don't know if these food products are halal or they just stick a label on it saying it's halal.

But the good news is that if people are trying to con us then the sin on them and not us. We take their word that it's halal. The worrying thing is that we could never be sure 100% that what we are eating are halal.

Better learn to make your burgers and ice cream at home - by pure ingredients. Then you are sure that they really are halal.

And also then your money goes to local farmers/shops - not to multi-international business companies.

;)

Wa`alaikum salaam warahmatullaah.

I've never eaten there alhmadulillaah. (But their shakes look very tasty) From what I gather, ad according to the Muslim Consumer Group that's based in Illinois, it's best to avoid going there. Baskin Robbins has failed to provide information for many, many things on the list. The only thing that has a Halal status is their Orange Sherbet and sugar cones.

The following are definitely haraam, according to MCG.

Baseball Nut® Ice Cream

Cake Cones

Cherries Jubilee Ice Cream

Icing on the Cake® Ice Cream

Vanilla Soft Serve Cone

Waffle Cone

Rocky Road Ice Cream, Rum Raisin Ice Cream

Heath 31° Below®, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough 31° Below® and all others

Caramel Cappuccino Blast, Cappuccino Blast® Mocha, Cappuccino Blast® (made with Soft Serve)

Abu Loren, you're right, and I have felt like that every time I've picked up, say, dairy products that list gelatine as halal in their ingredients. But with franchises as these, it makes you wonder, why then do the Islamic Councils, national ones at that, certify it as halal. See I've stopped asking the McDonald's question many years ago, but then you wonder why certain places are actually certified when for instance they sell pork on the premises.

sister herb, you know, I've attempted KFC and McDonald's in the past, and Alhamdulillah, would say it was successful, but ice cream, I crave the real thing sometimes. Yes yes, my long overdue ice cream machine, I should buy it as my Eid present to myself :D

Janaan, you know I read that list as I was standing in the store, with my nephew staring at the orange sherbet, but it didn't pass the certainty mark for me. Makes me regret the detox I was on when in KL ... My nephew bought me my favourite flavour from Haagen Dazs, and I had a single spoon ... Absurd, I know.

If you have freezer you can make ice cream without ice cream maker too. I will send here some recipes soon...

How do you think our moms made ice cream at home before ice cream machines? :p

Lol. You took your Halaal list with you?

Alhamdulillaah that you already knew though. I used to eat Ice cream from Dairy Queens (do you guys have one down there?), haven't been there for so long but maybe i'll stop by one day and ask about their ingredients because my younger cousins still eat their stuff.

Hahaha no. I went into the store confident it was halal, thus me going in the first place. My very practicing family friends offered it to me at their place ... But when I got to the store, the woman's uncertainty made me google it :D Came across the same list you've shared.

Not that I've heard of, not in my city, maybe interstate ... Not sure.

How our grand moms got ice cubs at the middle of winter without freezers? They where took to containers at the winter from the lakes or rivers and covered by the sawdust to keep them cool all the summer.

:p

sister herb, it's almost like you're saying I should sit under the falling snow, and let the flakes fill my bowl and sprinkle some sugar on it, and voi la! :D Shake it for twenty minutes?! I'll be sure to remember to make this during my next arm workout. Or I could get it churned in the machine while I enjoy my workout :)

Nah, in all seriousness, I like the zip lock bag idea, sounds more like me. Having a gadget for everything ... Extravaganza ...

Assalamu'alaykum,

So this is the response that I received. Thought I'd share it to excite a few other ice-cream lovers :)

Hi Mahzala,

Thank you for your enquiry. You will be glad to know that most of our Ice Cream flavours are Halal Certified, with the exception of one or two. I have attached a guide that you can use, that shows the flavours which are halal and which are not. Also, please note that the flavours with an * next to it contain gelatin.

I hope this information is of good assistance to you, have a great day!

Kind Regards,
Baskin-Robbins Australia

Icecream without a freezer, but how do we get the icecubes without a freezer?

Edit: ah from lakes. Only in somewhere as cold as Finland I guess!

Finland isn´t the only place where lakes are iced at the winter. You can book your airline ticket to the Siberia as well...

Have a nice trip, brother.

Edit:
but how do we get the icecubes without a freezer?

a) You can buy an ice cube machine
b) you can buy your ice cream from the shop and eat it before it melts
c) (as I wrote before: ) you can travel to the Siberia...

All flavors in Baskin Robbin ice cream are made with alcohol so they are not Halal. If Carrageenan present and if there is no flavor then this ice cream is mushbooh.

Red 40 & Yellow 5 are chemical dyes, lakes and they are Halal if used as powder or granular forms but if they have to use as liquid then vegetable oil or glycerin is added as a solvent. Glycerin can be made from pork or beef or vegetable fat. Only vegetable fat based glycerin is Halal.

How to make ice without a freezer

In the old days we had ice-houses, they work along the same principles as thermos flasks, but they are much bigger. We'd fill the ice-house with ice from rivers and lakes in winter (or import it from Norway) and it would keep itself cool most of the summer.

Almost 15-16 years back when there was no electricity in my grandmother's village, occasionally once or twice in a month we used to get ice-cream seller. Actually they not had creams, they used to be ice candy of orange and lemon flavours.
That ice cream seller used to carry it in some wooden or tin box , carrying it on head but salt used to there around the ice-candy, which must have been used to prevent it from melting.

I think many of you must have not seen such ancient method of ice-candy marketting in this age of ice-cream shops at street corner .:)
