Hello all I know the basics of wudu it consists of watching hands, washing mouth, cleaning nose, washing face, washing elbows, wash hair and then finally feet. My question is when urinating does your wudu break? when you do a number 2 does your wudu break? Do you have to wash your private parts after urinating? do you have to clean your bum using water? What if water is unavaliable at public toilets i.e school then what should a person do?

Sorry for all the questions all at once but I need to know thank you very much in advance and may allah reward us all

Assalamu alaykum and welcome to the site, I assume you are a revert to Islam? : )

If you release wind, use the toilet to relieve yourself whether it is urine or stools, it breaks the wudhu.

It is important to wash your private parts with water, however you could use just toilet paper.

When a person relieves himself, he must cleanse himself of impurities either with water – which is best and most perfect – or with something other than water which will remove the impurities, such as toilet paper, fabric, stones or something else.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:

When a person relieves himself, he must do one of the following three things.

1 – He may purify himself with water, which is permissible. The evidence for that is the hadeeth of Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to relieve himself, then another boy and I would bring a vessel of water and a short spear [to use as a sutrah for the prayer he was going to do after doing wudoo’] and he would cleanse himself with the water.”

(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 149; Muslim, 271)

The reason for that is that the basic way of removing impurities is to use water. Just as you use water to remove any impurities from your foot, so too you use it to remove any impurities resulting from relieving yourself.

2 – He may purify himself using stones. Doing istijmaar or removing impurities with stones is sufficient. This is indicated by the words and actions of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). With regard to his words, Salmaan (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade us to use less than three stones for the purpose of istijmaar.”

(Narrated by Muslim, 262).

With regard to his actions, Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) went out to answer the call of nature and asked me to bring him three stones. I found two stones and searched for a third but could not find one. So I took a piece of dried dung and brought it to him. He took the two stones and threw away the dung and said, ‘This is a filthy thing.’”

(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 122).

The hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah, which states that he gathered some stones for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and brought them to him in his garment, put them down next to him then went away (narrated by al-Bukhaari, 154) indicates that istijmaar (using stones to cleanse oneself after relieving oneself) is permissible.

3 – Cleaning oneself with stones then with water.

I do not know of any report to this effect from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), but there is no doubt that this is more effective in cleaning.

Al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 1/103-105

Based on this, you have no excuse for not praying or for delaying the prayer beyond the appointed time because you are not able to do instinja’ (wash with water after relieving yourself), because you can remove the impurity and cleanse yourself of it using tissues and the like. Everyone can carry some tissues with him in his pocket to clean himself with. Moreover, it is not clear from the question what is stopping you from cleaning yourself with water after relieving yourself, especially since you say, “Should I make wudoo’ and pray or miss the prayer?” What that means is that water is available, so you can bring some water to the toilet and use it to clean yourself. If you do not do that then you have to remove the impurity using tissues and the like, then do wudoo’ and pray. It is not permissible for you to delay the prayer until the time for it has passed.

And Allaah knows best.

Al-Bahooti (may Allah have mercy on him) said: it is obligatory to cleanse oneself with water (istinja’) or with stones and the like (istijmaar) from everything that regularly comes out of the front and back passages, such as urine or stools, because Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): “And keep away from all impurity” [al-Muddaththir 74:5]; this includes every part of the clothing and the body. And the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “If one of you goes to relieve himself, let him take three stones with him, and they will be sufficient for him.” Narrated by Abu Dawood; the command here indicates that it is obligatory. He said that it is sufficient, which clearly indicates that it is obligatory.

Sister's don't need to read, this is for men mostly.

Wudu is broken if you go #1, #2, if you pass wind, go to sleep/lose consciousness/become intoxicated (from drugs), discharge from privates (i.e. clear liquid or sperm for men or liquid or menses for women), have sex, and there are a few other things too, i.e. bleeding (excessive or not, varies from school of thought), touching your wife (especially in sexual nature- also varies in school of thought) etc. You do have to wash your private parts and keep any soil and impurities off yourself and clothes before praying (and should be like this always inshallah anyway). You should clean your privates with toilet paper and water and wipe until your toilet paper is clear when you go #2 inshallah.

Obviously before using any water you use toilet paper and wipe until all color is gone. Then use water. If a bidet is not there I find it best to wet a paper towel or toilet paper and wipe hard again, even if wiping until clear with dry toilet paper, when you use a wet toilet paper you will see that it again gets color- so it is very good to do the little extra effort to make sure all the impurities are removed from your backside. Then finally I use a dry toilet paper to absorb the water that is left in the area so it is all dry and clean inshallah when I am done.

In public toilets I get a large wad of toilet paper or a couple paper towels and soak it then enter the stall for #2. And for #1 I will take a paper towel or toilet paper with me to the urinal to wipe up any urine (you can wet this too to be extra clean) before I go.

Water is best, but if you don't have it then you obviously can't use it... just do your best inshallah to clean up. If you forget to get it before you go into a stall then clean up as best as you can, then leave the stall and wet some toilet paper, and then go back to the stall to finish the job... If you forget at the urinal and you don't have anything to wipe with wipe on your hand and then go wash your hands... Of course at home you should sit down when you go #1 as if you stand it will splash all over the place- on you, on the ground, etc. I only use urinals in public areas since it is cleaner to stand then make so much contact around the toilet- men's bathrooms are usually quite filthy. Even at the urinal I stand like van damme doing his famous split kick almost so I don't get so much urine on the bottom of my shoes. Another tip is to hold your stream a bit (pinch down) so it does not have so much force to splash back onto you or the ground. Sorry to sound crude. I am a bit embarrassed, but I think this is good advice to put here for many brothers.

I always have napkins and paper towels in my pocket, I don't throw them away after drying my hands. They are just wet so I let them dry in my pocket and they come in useful throughout the day.

One other final tip, use one paper towel to open the door in the bathroom. In the west I'd say about 50% of the time men do not even wash their hands after. Keep the paper towel in your hand until you find a trash can, usually there is one right as you open the door as many people do this...

This is mostly from my experience, but I am sure most do it like this.
