Shab-e-Baraat (Laylatul Nifsul Shaban) is the night when Allah the Almighty arranges the affairs of the following year. It is a night of worship and prayers for all Muslims.

Nawafil for Shab-e-Baraat

3. Dua for dependance on Allah alone, to the exclusion of His creations.

This special prayer, by the blessing of Allah Almighty, will give you a healthy and prosperous life for the coming year, Inshallah.

Hazrat Fatima (May Allah be pleased with her) is reported to have said that whoever will observe this prayer, on Shab-e-Baraat and will present its reward (sawab) to my soul, I will strongly recommend for his/her forgiveness to Allah Almighty before I enter the heavens.

4. The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) used to read this dua abundantly on this night, we should do the same:

Praise be to Allaah.
There is no saheeh marfoo’ report that speaks of the virtue of the middle of Sha’baan that may be followed, not even in the chapters on al-Fadaa’il (chapters on virtues in books of hadeeth etc.). Some maqtoo’ reports (reports whose isnaads do not go back further than the Taabi’een) have been narrated from some of the Taabi’een, and there are some ahaadeeth, the best of which are mawdoo’ (fabricated) or da’eef jiddan (very weak). These reports became very well known in some countries which were overwhelmed by ignorance; these reports suggest that people’s lifespans are written on that day or that it is decided on that day who is to die in the coming year. On this basis, it is not prescribed to spend this night in prayer or to fast on this day, or to single it out for certain acts of worship. One should not be deceived by the large numbers of ignorant people who do these things. And Allaah knows best.
Shaykh Ibn Jibreen.
If a person wants to pray qiyaam on this night as he does on other nights – without doing anything extra or singling this night out for anything – then that is OK. The same applies if he fasts the day of the fifteenth of Sha’baan because it happens to be one of the ayyaam al-beed, along with the fourteenth and thirteenth of the month, or because it happens to be a Monday or Thursday. If the fifteenth (of Sha’baan) coincides with a Monday or Thursday, there is nothing wrong with that (fasting on that day), so long as he is not seeking extra reward that has not been proven (in the saheeh texts). And Allaah knows best.

I have never heard of this auspicious night!(could any one enlighten me in this?) or I never knew that Fatwimah(r.a) would one time intercede for us,but all I know is that if you specify a particular act of worship for a particular time which in essence was never done by the prophet(s.a.w),recommended us to do,not done by the "rightly guided vicegerents" nor recommended by them(surely if there was any good they would have done it before us) then that act which is in essence no where to be found in Islam' authentic sources becomes under the shade of Bida'ah!
The prophet(s.a.w) left us with a very powerful Hadith saying,"leave what doubts you for that which is not dubious to you". This is a Hadith which most people know but few use and apply!
Assuming that you believe in the existence of this night, what harm will it bring to you if you leave it since it creates some doubts in you?
let's establish all obligatory acts and then come with those optional acts of which no one will object to...I mean if we could only know how praiseworthy it is in doing just that!,if we need success then it is all in that.
Brother Suhel, how is this Salah prayed? it is intriguing to see no odd number, does this salah have a witr? And about the merits of doing this Nafl as you say, whose words are those(your last paragraph)? a matn of a Hadith? I wish the link could clarify that a bit more, brother.

may Allah guide us to His straightened path, and forgive our sins and those of all muslims dead and alive...aamiin

There is a difference of opinion of the scholars here (and other virtues of Shaban), throughout Islamic history lasting to today. This is because many of the hadith on Shaban (not all) are classified as weak but there are so many of them that it is compelling to accept this night and month as special. We should respect the opinion of those that do make extra ibada on this night/month and those that are on the opinion that it is not special. This night is considered special by many classical and famous scholars across the Ummah (i.e. Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal, Ibn Taymiyya and Ashraf Ali Thanvi) so we should not just say people that also follow this opinion and their countries are ignorant, in my humble opinion. Here is a nice article that goes into some of the daleel supporting Shab-e-Baraat. It covers some of the daleel and differences in scholarly opinions too throughout history when you look at the footnotes at the bottom:
http://www.ummah.com/forum/showthre...h-of-Shaban!&p=2738269&viewfull=1#post2738269

Of course, this is just one of many articles on the topic, I suggest you all look into it too. Some group of scholars or Mathabs opinions were handed down into modern countries, may be biased towards one side so depending on what language you search you'll find different opinions. I think it is always best to go with your country/community when such matters are highly debated like this to not break unity and make fitnah, unity is important above all else, but I know others feel different.

It is quite amazing we have such scholars that can know each chain of narration person and their background and other hadiths then balance this with other hadiths on the topic and finally make a judgement on the matter (among many other things)- a must read in my opinion. Mashallah, I so wish I could posses such knowledge. May Allah SWT bless all our scholars and give them Jennah Fardos and gives us even better ones.

Most of us are not scholars here so it is futile for us to debate this here, so please try to be respectful if you do wish to share your opinion.

There is no question of fasting the whole month of Sha'aban preferably first 15 and in it is the night in which Allah accounts for all deeds of human beings but all I was wondering was the praying of the mid-night with specific rakaats and recitations and as you can see it's an object of arguments(dubious as I would like to say) the Link above really helps brother,Jazakal-lah.
I admit concession and withdraw my case to myself.

May Allah forgive our sins and the sins of all muslims...aamiin

Smile for Allah
But doing any extra worship on this night is not supported by the sunnah, meaning it is a bid ah. Brother, there is a thread in the Turntoislam subforum -the innovation of mid shaban, please go read the attachment with it.

Thank you Tabassum, I have read the article but it did not go into the detail I had hoped. It just kept saying "The correct opinion is ..." but did not specify the hadith or its weakness and did not support a lot of its points with evidence- you basically are forced to just trust the author with his opinion in a lot of places. It also ignored other Sahih hadith on the topic that I know. I am sure much of it is correct though and I agree that much of what people claim on this night and Shaban should not be counted as Sunnah because it is not fully authenticated. Did you see this?:

Mu'adh ibn Jabal RA reports that Prophet SAW said: “Allah looks at his creation on the night of mid-Shaban and He forgives all his creation except for the idolater and the one bent on hatred.”
[Narrated by Ibn Hibban (12:481) with a sound chain according to al-Arna’ut and al-Haythami who said that Tabarani also narrated it in his Kabir and Awsat with chains containing only trustworthy narrators, that is: sound (sahih) chains; Ibn Khuzayma included it in his Sahih, which has the same level of acceptance among the experts as Sahih Muslim; and even Albani included it in his Silsila sahiha.]

The Mother of the Believers Aisha RA said: “The Messenger of Allah SAW used to fast until we thought he would never break his fast, and not fast until we thought he would never fast. I never saw the Messenger of Allah SAW fasting for an entire month except in Ramadan, and I never saw him fast more than he did in Shaban.
[Narrated by al-Bukhârî, no. 1833; Muslim, no. 1956]

Concerning the night of mid-Shaban Ibn Taymiyya wrote:

[Some] said there is no difference between this and other nights of the year. However, the opinion of many of the people of learning and that of the majority of our [Hanbali] colleagues and other than them is that it is a night of superior merit, and this is what is indicated by the words of Ahmad [ibn Hanbal], in view of the many hadiths transmitted about it and in light of what confirms this in the words and deeds transmitted from the early generations (al-athar al-salafiyya). Some of its merits have been transmitted in the books of Hadith of the types Musnad and Sunnan. This holds true even if other things have been forged concerning it.
[Ibn Taymiyya Iqtida al-Sirat al-Mustaqim (1369/1950 ed. P 302) translation by Shaikh Gibril Haddad in his Sunnah Notes (Vol 1, p. 208)]

We should seek Allah SWT's Mercy and Reward each day and night and always try to worship Him as best as we can. I'll tell you, for me, I definitely will be doing this on this night inshallah. :) May Allah SWT grant us success.

Here is another nice link on the topic, gives both sides perspective:

its not biddah ! why r u searching on internet about islam ! ASK DIRECT TO MUFTI, AALIM, ULMAH !!

We follow the Quran and sunnah, not mufti's and aalim's.

there is some report that fasting on the 15th of Shabaan was practiced, so there is no harm in it.

but all these other rituals -- where do you get those from? The only confirmed rituals in Islam are salaat 5 x per day, and fasting during Ramadan.

The idea that Allah determines the events for the upcoming year during the 15th night of Shabaan is pure superstition and has no basis in Islam. Is it written in the Quran somewhere??

You find hadiths on the subject in different hadith books (i.e. Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban, and Sahih Bukhari) and many scholars with this opinion, so it is not superstition. Some scholars say they are weak, other say they are not and also the sheer number of ayat on the topic also show that there is some significance as Ibn Taymiyyah has concluded. You can be on the opinion it is not weak but please don't call it pure superstition without looking into the topic further ins.

There is nothing wrong in asking someone more knowledgeable, in fact that is very much preferable. Did you read all the Hadith books and not find any reference to it, or did you go read an opinion of another scholar on the topic? How did you get to such a strong opinion? We should respect all scholarly opinions inshallah and also do what we think is best by doing our own research and using our heart and mind. These are all optional ibadah anyway, no one is saying it is fard/wajib.

Also, there is a lot more confirmed than 5x a day and Ramadan, I am sure you are aware but we should be careful with our words, what about Zakat, Hajj, and countless other things we have from the Quran and Sunnah? By the way, 5 daily prayers is not even mentioned in the Quran, we know this from the Sunnah and the great works of our scholars and information handed down from early generations (Sahabah and Tabien) to us directly too of course. The sheer number of Sahabah that reported the 15th of Shaban and fasting there in is the reason why we have this debate among the scholars. :)

In my opinion, these scholars against it probably don't know better than Ibn Majah and the like that collected all these hadtih on the topic. I think it is fine either way, but hoping for the mercy and reward from Allah SWT is always good no matter what so long as you have an ayat to back it up and opinion by many scholars (which is both true in this case). We should not talk bad about any scholarly opinion inshallah and to cause division among us. Unity is important above all else and there is plenty of room in Islam for different opinions.
