Amid human rights concerns, Indonesian province of Aceh extends Islamic law to some 90,000 non-Muslims.

Banda Aceh, Indonesia - Muslims and non-Muslims alike are now subject to strict Islamic law in the conservative province of Aceh.

It is the only one of Indonesia's 34 provinces to impose Islamic law in the most populous Muslim-majority nation in the world, with a population of about 250 million people.

Aceh province implemented Islamic law in 2001, but in September the religious "penal code" was extended to everyone, now applying to some 90,000 non-Muslims who live there.

Offences not previously regulated such as adultery, homosexual acts, and sex outside marriage are now punishable with sentences handed down by Islamic courts, including public flogging. Buying or carrying alcoholic beverages could result in 10 strokes of the cane, 10 months in prison, or a maximum fine of 100 grams in gold.

Amnesty International has expressed concern over the law and has called for an end to caning in Aceh, saying it goes against international laws on torture and human rights, as well as Indonesia's own constitution.

However, a Tuesday report by the Catholic News Service said an expansion of Islamic law to include non-Muslims has had little impact on Christians.

"Until now, no Catholic has been punished for violating sharia law, and I hope that doesn't change in the future," Father Hermanus Sahar, pastor of Banda Aceh's Sacred Heart Catholic Church, was quoted as saying.

A hijab shop in central Banda Aceh. The extension of Islamic law to every person in Banda Aceh is hard to implement as most authorities - including members of the religious police - think it is bad for business.

Saudi Arabia #2. This is why people are afraid.

A government that controls your dress, haicuts, and hobbies is not a good one. What do you take humans for, robots? Freedom of expression is a must for a successful society.

Exactly.

I don´t see that kind of government with its laws is very different than for example French-style one who force you walk outside without niqab. It´s all same controling of people and their habits or beliefs.

Salam.
We knows that Indonesian Muslims are good in practicing Islam. Ma Sha Allah.
It looks all those step and rules are Ma Sha Allah good for a Muslim Culture. But it could take time to inform ppl to cope up.
We human beings are fond of bad habit. This is our nature. So we need control to manage a organized, well-behaved punctual society.

Every-time we see any news like this type of Muslim governance we become confused and fear that it may another bad fate for our future. This is not our fault. Some bad people are responsible for this. Those who are misuse Islam and take advantage for Dunia by insulting Islam. Astagfirullah.

May Allah accept us in his worship. Ameen.

I don't want to be lashed for a haircut. Idk but to me it seems like a bad idea. They'll start pushing people away from Islam with their harshness. You have to understand our fear though. We fear abuse of religion (VERY LIKELY). If it was applied correctly then no problem.

Yes it is. And this is big task to apply correctly.
What should we do, just pray and hope that everything will gonna be alright.:SMILY26:

Actually yes, we only can pray that other people will follow the teachings of islam. If the government forces them to follow it with religious police and fear of punishments, people may follow the rules of islam but not because they really want to follow islam in their hearts. And we all know that Allah doesn´t for example accept anyones prayers if he has forced to pray - not pray because he wants to.

I thing we are concentrate about our failure more then our success as a Muslim. It's true most of us are not good as Allah swt wants from us. But we have to be a good perform of Islam from our individual perspective. Since i'm a Muslim i should be courage to perform Islamic cod and conduct.

We can help each other to support in good deeds and advice. At least i have to make my path clear as Allah and his Rasool (PBUH) expect to me. May Allah help us.

Br. Zaman, we can't force non-muslims to become muslims. We can't force them to attend a mosque or wear hijab. What if your government forced you to go to church?

Also, it is Allah SWT who will punish us on the day of judgement. Why are male policemen telling a woman what to do or what to wear? it is Allah who will inflict punishment, NOT a male policeman.

That photograph of the man who is forced to do push ups because he is wearing shorts -- that is so degrading, belittling and inhumane. Those stupid police officers are laughing at him.

Astaghfirullah, the government of Indonesia is truly crazy if this is their version of Islam.

:) Thanks sister Precious Star about your words.

This might be a little off topic but this is a reason why I like islam so much; when it goes to issues like this, we concern the rights of non-muslims so often and are ready to protect their rights too (not only rights of muslims).

I see that the pursuit of justice in society is an important part of Islam.

Asalaam Aleykum,
Aceh has made great strides in introducing Shariah alhumdulillah! It is a Muslim province and it is only right that everyone should have to obey the law. You cannot have non-Muslims flouting the law. There will always be those that criticise when they see Shariah being applied, but it is very popular with the local population who turn out in large numbers to see Islamic punishments administered outside the masjid. Allahu Akbar!

I'm sorry but when you say Shariah is being applied, do you just mean the punishments (hudud)? I don't get it. People are getting so excited that they can finally stone people but there is no mention of the social inequality, injustice, and poverty that is affecting people over there in millions. Does Shariah just mean punishing people?

Salam Sister,
I'm not sure is there anyone go to force a non-Muslims to become Muslim and also force to attend Mosque!!! This is undoubtedly forbidden in Islam. And in case of Hijab this is not a elaborate way to comment on it.

Islam is the solution of everything. So we have to lead our life according to Quran and Sunnah. In this way excessiveness is not considerable at all.

It is difficult to establish justice. Yes bro Sharia is not pretend like this. This is all about for Human beings and peace for all. But unfortunately we don't see this. Problem is to apply it with the fear of Allah swt.
I have another Question "Does Sharia is man made law"??

Yes you are right, the non muslims are not forced to go to the mosque, I read that incorrectly. Muslims are required to attend the mosque and the "religious police" will enforce that law. I just think that you can't force someone to practice islam the way a state government wants you too. We all have free will. We answer to Allah, not to religious police.

But non muslims will be subject to other aspects of sharia such as caning for the possession of alcohol, and the prohibition on building churches.

If Muslims are allowed to build mosques in Europe and other non muslim territories, then why can't muslims allow Christians the freedom to build their own house of worship? We're no better than the communists who would not allow Muslims to practice their religion openly in USSR, Albania, and China (China is curtailing the freedom of its 26 million Muslims on a daily basis).

I can't say about all of my Muslim Brother and Sisters but i feel and knows that i'm not a good performer as Allah Swt and his Messenger Saw wants form me as a Muslim. (Astagfirullah).

As much as i know everyone is responsible about his or her duties. Parents are responsible to train/guide/grow up their child in precious way what is Islam wants. In this ways a Muslim Government surly have this responsibility to save his people from disobedience of Allah swt and hell fire. And it should be done flowed by the path of Prophet SAW's way. Not a self dominated cruel way.

We all human beings are lovely creation of Allah SWT and Allah swt give us freedom to do good or bad deeds using our knowledge/intellectual. We have seen in the history when a church become mosque that wasn't done by force. When people understand the truth they convert churches in to mosque by them self. In this regard Muslim leaders and Olama are just help them to choose the right path. Though every one wasn't accepted Islam but those who, they did that job.

Actually if anything done by true Islam we won't found any dislike or any guilty on there. The Problem is when we use Islam in our bad interests. We have seen this abuse of Islam frequent in this world, which cause blame about Islam and inducing people to different Ism. Astagfirullah.

Allah knows best. May Allah Guide us forgive us.

Islam addresses all aspects of life including inequality, injustice and poverty and these are frequently discussed. Shariah provides the legal framework for this and, yes, it does include prescribed punishments, but these are seen as generous gifts from Allah swt to help preserve a safe society.

Those push ups being done by the man in shorts are NOT gifts from Allah.
