Salaam,

You ask a question that is very thought provoking. I hope this will help. Even Hazart Suliman, the wisest, worked on baskets to earn his food. In Islam we are told to work, even if we don't have a penny we are told to gather sticks and sell them at the market place. The wives of the Prophet (swas) were adept at working in several trades, tanning, weaving, and wholesale.
The companions of the Prophet (swas) worked, went to battle, and worked. The Prophet never wasted time. It is essential in the make-up of Muslims to be productive.
Education. I am begining to rethink what education really means. What exaclty do we want to learn? There comes a time in a persons life where the only education of any substance is prayer.
Many of the subjects taught are superferlous. There is no meat in the content. We, as Muslims, have to be careful as to what we are studying. If we buy into Western education..many times it is a paper game and we come out with a sheet of paper and no skills.
You ask about a MBA...many of the prinicpals of economics and sound business practices are unethical and against the grain of Islam.
Should you work or pursue higher education. They serve two different purposes. Most of the brillant humans I have encountered have dropped out of school.
Please do not think I am bashing anyone. I am speaking the truth. I encourage everyone to work..it humbles you...I am a firm beliver in education. But, I caution you to think where will the degrees lead.
How will you edcuation give back to your community? How will your education help to raise your iman?
Fianlly, you need to spend a moment and listen to where your heart directs you.

Asalaamalikum sister,

You ask a great question. I agree with sister "Mirajmom." I believe with knowledge comes responsibilities. If you are wealthy and have money/property inherited from your parents, family, generation then maybe you don't have to work. It's a matter of personal choice. It's almost like if you won the jackpot lottery, would you quit your work?

If you really love to study a field don't you want to continue it by working in the job field that is related to what you truly love? I personally don't know anyone that just studies for the sake of studying without putting it into action, sharing it with others, and of course make a living ($$) out of it. Alot of times book studies is different when you apply it to the real world too. How about if you have kids, will they look up to you as a hard working mother/father or just someone who learned everything and now just sits around all day? Will they do the same thing?

To seek knowledge is a sacred duty, it is obligatory on every Muslim, male and female. The first word revealed of the Qur’an was "Iqra" READ! Seek knowledge! Educate yourselves! Be educated.

Surah Al-Zumr, ayah 9 reveals: "Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know?" Surah Al-Baqarah, ayah 269 reveals: "Allah grants wisdom to whom He pleases and to whom wisdom is granted indeed he receives an overflowing benefit."

Ibn Mas’ud (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: The position of only two persons is enviable; the person whom Allah bestowed wealth empowering him to spend it in the way of righteousness, and the person whom Allah gave wisdom with which he adjudges and which he teaches to others.

A part time job when your 14 is good. You can get everything you want, and you can do anything Fisibilillah (For the Sake of Allah) like giving the money to Muslims in places like Darfur or stuff. Or you can use it for your Islamic education like getting some good Islamic softwares like The Alim which costs about $40.00 ( or 20 pounds). Or you can be able to buy awesome things that will help you be able to give Dawah in a way that attracts people's attention like using an imovie instead of Powerpoint.

Wa Salam.

I believe that if you chose not work even you higher education, as long as you teach and spread your knowledge to others it would be the right thing to do. Teaching your kids about what you learned is one possibility.

Asaalamalikum,

You can only teach your kids to the extent of their interest, as a Muslim you want to make contributions to the world. Don't you want to be remembered when you die? Don't you want to leave your mark? Nobody will know and care about a person who was a genius but never contributed anything to humanity. I am firmly a supporter of education and I think the Muslim world is really lacking this and we're always complaining about how our voices are never heard. We need to build our credentials and one of the best ways to do that is to educate ourselves and push our kids hard to become doctors, lawyers, etc.

personally in islam BOTH THIS LIFE AND HEREAFTER IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT..One must have a secular education in order to survive( other wise how are u gona pay ur bills etc) and u also need religious education AT THE SAME time.(otherwise what is ur preparation to meet ur lord)

If a Muslim can be the rchest man on earth then why not? That person can contribute more to the society. As long as the money that is gained isnt through unislamic ways
