Broken Promises

Asalaamalikum brothers and sisters,

I am feeling really down at the moment. What would you do if you promised Allah swt you would not do a bad habit and then you broke that promise? Deep in my heart I felt like it was wrong, disrespectful and unlike my character.

Salam Brother,

As u said WHAT U DO in my case brother I will prefer to observe fast for Allah, seeking his forgivness and giving me strength to keep me away from it, and do ebada as much as I can as in my view fast give us strength to keep us control on our evil desires. This my way it may change from man to man, may be I may wrong Allah knows the best. May Allah gives us the strength and corrage to follow the path of truth Islam. Ameen. Pls rem me in ur duwas.

Allah Hafiz.

You know this reminds me of an old episode of Brothers Garcia (i don't really remember what happened exactly). Where the mom is sick so the girl prays to God. she says Oh God please make my mother better and I promise I'll never watch my favorite tv show again. well soon her mother is better. then she gets tempted to watch tv and so she does. then her mother get sick again.. so the girl says oh its my fault mami is sick, i broke my promise to God. well eventually the girl is advised first of all you don't make those kinda promises to God; God has power to make your mother better without you stopping to watch ur fav show. Secondly you don't make promises to God that you're not sure you can handle.

So do you think we should not make any promises to Allah or is there somethings you can make promises? You are suggesting I should assess myself before I can make a promise huh?

The thing is Allah (SWT) is the Most forgiving, so even though you did make a promise and then brake it, if you really feel bad (which I think you do) repent and inshAllah you will be forgiven.

i have SO been there and felt like just what u described and i dont know.

You can :(

You can :SMILY23:

but it doesnt help because it just doesnt bring it back and u cant change whts done however much you want to and u think any other promise u make just cant be taken seriously anymore cos u feel like a bit of a joke in front of Allah (swt) right.

Maybe it comes back to reviving the trust, that ok i will keep this promise and in turn Allah (swt) gives u another chance, Umar Ibn ul Khattab is known to have said that if on Qiyamah Allah (swt) said he would save only 1 person, he had so much hope he would chance at hoping it would be him, but at the same time, if on that day Allah (swt) said that theres is only 1 person who will go to Hell, Umar Ibn ul Khattab said he was afraid that single person would be him, so hope and fear is balanced i suppose.

So do you think we should not make any promises to Allah or is there somethings you can make promises? You are suggesting I should assess myself before I can make a promise huh?
Yeh it makes perfect sense to make sure that ure not setting ureself a target that u know u will fail at, otherwise you will break the promise and feel bad all the time and every time u break it.

The whole reason u feel bad is because, ok, the promise is broken, but ure resolve to be better than u have been, isnt broken, so with that resolve you feel depressed because u think u cant manage it.

im confused

and this is a depressing thread :(

Repent sincerely..wake up in tahajjud prayers and ask Allah forgiveness in tears.

Next time when you are about to commit any such mistake , remember in your heart that "Allah is watching you"

May Allah protect us from shaitan and help us to be on straight path. (Ameen)

oh i dunno i just wanted to share that episode with y'all!

but seriosly repent! i don't think we have to make promises to God because Allah will see in our actions what we do and Allah is All Aware of our intentions! but we do need to make commitments and limits for our ownselves that why we know our limits. this way becomes harder for us to break that self vow! its all about commitments and limits! Allah u'alam

Asalaamu'Alykum,

Well if fasting is the expiation for an oath, you have your opportunity brother, Jumaada ath-Thaanee is nearly ending, although Rajab is coming up and the Prophet (S.A.W) fasted most of that month. Best time. Inshallah.

Also ask for forgiveness, as suggested by praying in Tahajjud. And as well as praising Allah (S.W.T) also ask to get out of this bad habit. Inshallah.

Anyway Stay Strong and Smile! We have many blessings, so just keep strong and try and be steadfast, also Allah (S.W.T) is oft-forgiving and oft pardoning.

Alhamdulilah

assalamu aliykum dear
yes this has happened to be alot of times too but i did 3 days of fasting and prayed night prayers(laylatu Qadr) BUT more imporantly the fisrt thing you really need to do is ASK for forgiveness (ALLLAH has siad in a HADITH QUDSI) (OH MY SLAVES, YOU WILL COMMIT SIN BY DAY AND BY NIGHT, AND I FORGIVE ALL SINS SO SEEK FORGIVENESS OF ME AND I SHALL FORGIVE YOU.) so as u can see u don't need to do all of things just repent to ALLAH.
