Hamid al-Qasyrasi (rahimahullah) said:

“Though we know death is certain, we have not prepared ourselves for it.

Though we know paradise is definite, we have not worked for it.

Though we know the hell fire is certain, we have not feared it.

So why are you delighted?

What are you waiting for?

Death is the first visitor from the Almighty bringing good or evil tidings… so get closer to your Lord!”

The Angel of Death has been Assigned to You!

It is narrated that ‘Uthmân b. Áffân – Allâh be pleased with him – said in a sermon:

Son of Adam! Know that the angel of death who has been assigned to you has not ceased to pass you and move on to others, ever since you have been in this world. But it is as if he is about to pass someone else and move on to target you, so be careful and prepare for him (by correcting your deeds). And do not forget him, for he does not forget you. And know o son of Adam, if you are heedless about yourself and do not prepare, no one else will prepare for you. You must meet Allah the Mighty and Majestic, so take for yourself and do not leave it to someone else. Peace be on you.

Abû Bakr Al-Daynûrî, Al-Mujâlasah wa Jawâhir Al-Ílm 2: 73, 74.

The World in Three Days

It is reported from Al-Hasan Al-Basrî – Allâh have mercy on him – that he said:

The life of this world is made up of three days: yesterday has gone with all that was done; tomorrow, you may never reach; but today is for you so do what you should do today.

Al-Bayhaqî, Al-Zuhd Al-Kabîr p197.

Allaah says,

“Everyone shall taste death. And only on the day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the fire and admitted to Paradise he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception (a deceiving thing).” (Aal-‘Imraan 3: 175)

Such is the reality of death and what comes after it. Every one of us shall taste it whether poor or rich; healthy or sick, old or young; leader or led and none of us can escape it.

So WHY do we act like death is not near? Why do we try to ignore thinking of death when it can come to us at ANY second!

It maybe that we are alive now but that we will not be tomorrow. So prepare NOW and let us not ignore the inevitable!

Al-Hasan al-Basri says:

“When love of this world enters the heart, fear of the Hereafter exits from it. Beware of worldy distractions, for no servant opens a door of this world without several doors of works for the Hereafter being shut for him.”

Ali (Ra) said:

"The thing I fear for you the most is following desires and having hopes for this worldly life. Following desires blocks one from the truth, & having worldy hopes makes one forget the Hereafter.

This worldly life is ending but the Hereafter is approaching & each of them has its children. So be children of the hereafter, not children of this world, for today we have the opportunity to do good deeds whereas tomorrow maybe too late."(Bukhari)

Islam is the only religion in which the reality of death is constantly reminded of. That's a good thing, because we Muslims have to always be mindful that our lives in this dunya is temporary and that we are living and looking forward to the akhirah. May Allah SWT always remind us of this. Ameen.

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "He who loves his worldly life will harm his Hereafter. And he who loves his Hereafter will harm his worldly life. Give preference then, to that which is eternal (The Hereafter) over that which is temporary". (Ahmed)

He also said: "Wise is he who controls his desires & prepares for the life which starts after death, and wretched is he who makes himself a slave to his desires and has false expectations of Allah". (Tirmidhi)

The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, "O Allah! There is no life worth living except the life of the Hereafter... (Bukhari)

A dead person is followed by 3 things

The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, "When carried to his grave, a dead person is followed by three, two of which return (after his burial) & one remains with him: his relative, his property, & his deeds follow him; relatives & his property go back while his deeds remain with him." (Bukhari Vol. 8 : No. 521)

If we were to die right now then what would become of us? Surely then we must take action now, for any of us could fill the next grave!

If Only you knew

Abu Darda said:

"If only you knew what you will certainly see upon your death, you would never again eat a single bite out of a craving appetite, and you would never again drink an extra sip of water for the pleasure of unquenchable and insatiable thirst.

Hence, you will remain outdoor in perpetuity, bewildered and awaiting the unexpected, and you will never again seek comfort in a shelter or seek a shade. You will wander aimlessly and climb the hilltops of every mountain, you will look up towards the heavens and beseech your Lord for mercy, and you will beat on your chest and cry endlessly, and you will wish that you were a little vegetable – a plant which is protected to grow, and then plucked to be eaten by a hungry person passing along.”

The terrible reality of what is to come

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi-Allahu 'anhu): Allah's Apostle (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, "If you knew that which I know you would laugh little and weep much." (Bukhari Vol. 8 : No. 492)

Forsake your love for this world for love for the Hereafter:

Uthman (Ra) said: "Allah gave you this world so that you may seek the Hereafter with it, not for you to desire it."

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:

"This world, in comparison with the world to come (The hereafter), is the same as if one of you were to put his finger in the ocean.?Consider how much (water) you would have (on your finger) when you pulled it out." (Muslim)

Doing Without the Pleasures of this World:

Abu' l-Abbas as-Sa'idi said :

"A man came to the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and said, 'Oh Messenger of Allah! Guide me to such an action, that when I do it, Allah will love me and the people will love me?'

He said: "Do Not have love for this world and Allah will love you & do not be attracted to what people have and then the people will love you''.

You desire this world when the hereafter is better for you!

In the Qur'an we find this world & the next world described in the following terms:

"Yes you prefer the life of this world, but the next world is better & more lasting." 87:16-17

"You desire the attractions of this world, but Allah desires the next world for you." 8:67

"And they are happy with the life of this world, but the life of this world is small comfort compared to the next world." 13:26

Then why are we sacrificing the hereafter for this world?

Paradise: There is Nothing Like It:

"It is sparkling light, aromatic plants, a lofty palace, a flowing river, ripe fruit, a beautiful wife & abundant clothing, in an eternal abode of radiant joy, in beautifully constructed high houses." (Ibn Maajah)

"Bricks of gold & silver, & mortar of fragrant musk, pebbles of pearl & sapphire, & soil of saffron. Whoever enters it is filled with joy & will never feel miserable; he will live there forever."(Tirmidhi)

Assalaam walaikum,

Let me have the reality of thinking of death everyday. That is a reality, too.

Assalamu'alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

A question for each and everyone of us to think and contemplate about.

Indeed, we desire this world and get deceased by it that we tend to forget of our eternal, final Home.

May Allaah grant us the patience, the perseverance and the strengths to sacrifice this world for the Hereafter and not the other way around.

Ameen.

Ibn Qayyim (Ra) said: "Losing time is harder than death, as losing time keeps you away from Allah and the Hereafter, while death keeps you away from the worldly life and people."

Ali (Ra) said: "Everyone who is taken by death asks for more time, while everyone who still has time makes excuses for procrastination (putting off important tasks)."

So let us make the best of the little time we have left & not put off preparing for the Hereafter.
