125 killed in stampede at Hindu temple in India

JODHPUR, India - At least 125 people were killed and 50 injured when thousands of pilgrims stampeded Tuesday at a Hindu temple in the historic town of Jodhpur in western India, officials said.

Severe overcrowding apparently caused the crush as more than 12,000 people gathered at the temple to celebrate a Hindu festival, Jodhpur Police Superintendent Malini Agarwal said.

At least 125 were killed and 50 were injured in the stampede, said senior police official Rajeev Daso.

The stampede apparently began as false rumors of a bomb spread among the crowd, said Ramesh Vyas, a pilgrim who was standing in line. India has been hit by a spate of recent bomb attacks, the latest on Monday night in the western city of Malegaon.

Television footage from Jodhpur showed dozens of bodies lying on the sidewalk, while nearby frantic people tried to revive unconscious devotees, slapping their faces and pressing on their chests.

Others dragged people by their arms and legs, running down a ramp that leads to the temple inside the massive 15th century Mehrangarh fort that overlooks the town.

One child sat on the ground next to the body of a woman, rubbing her forehead and crying "mother, mother."

Thousands had gathered at the temple at dawn Tuesday to mark the first day of Navratra, a nine-day Hindu festival to honor the Mother Goddess.

Jodhpur is some 180 miles southwest of the Rajasthan state capital of Jaipur.

The Mehrangarh fort is one of the town's biggest tourist attractions with its huge walls, ornate interiors and views overlooking Jodhpur's "blue city."

Deadly stampedes are a relatively common occurrence at temples in India, where large crowds - sometimes hundreds of thousands of people - congregate in small areas lacking facilities to control big gatherings.

In August, 145 people were killed when rumors of an avalanche sparked a stampede at a hilltop temple in northern India.

May Allah forgive them of their sins.
Who? The Hindus? Brother(s) (Abel and Sa'ad), a person will not be forgiven for doing Shirk, associating partners with Allah Ta Alla, especially those people who were worshipping and "honoring" the "mother godess," Astagfirullah, and they shall abide in Jahanam for eternity, no matter what deeds they have done in their life, even if they did many good deeds. The person who beleives in his heart that Allah Ta Alla is alone in worship and Might, is more worth (even if that is his only deed) than a disbeleiver who fills their life with good deeds, and he is saved from the severest doom of Eternity, whilst they shall abide therein forever.

Pretty scary and upsetting, but everything is up to Allah Ta Alla. If Islam came to them, or if monothesiem came to their mind and they rejected them, then it is confirmed that they have truly disbeleived.

Whilst for the others, Allah Ta Alla knows best.

And if you cry and make dua for those fallen souls for your whole life, it still wouldn't matter. Because even Rasulallah (SAW)'s duas for his Uncle Abu Talib were rejected, and Allah Ta Alla (and Jibreel) said to him, "It is not fitting for the messenger of Allah Ta Alla to mourn for the dead disbeleivers, even if they be of kin," and Rasulallah (SAW)'s dua had the greatest Barakah in it. So if anyone has made dua for the disbeleivers who have died, it is of vain.

But the best anyone can do is spread the message of Islam and make dua for Allah Ta Alla to have such and such people accept Islam and Tawheed.

And Allah Ta Alla is the settler of affairs.

I agree brother... I think thats what the scholars say too.

What the scholars say has no bearing on any of us knowing what was in their hearts. It sickens me that people can follow things so blindly without their own intellect guiding them. Can any of you two posters above say for certain that none of these people in their last moments before death accepted Islam or truly did believe (perhaps they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, forced to attend by Hindu parents, etc. etc.)

As far as I know, what is in someone's heart is not known to anyone but Allah.

Perhaps you should reflect on that idea.
