3. Flight Mechanics - how to make things fly
as I used to study aerospace engineering, i'll try to give the explanation:
As we all know, so-called flying machines are 20th century "toys", if we back 100 or 200 years ago and we ask what aircraft, jet engine, turbofan, cockpit, flaps, landing gear, are, most people would thing those as some kind of exotic dishes or tropical jungle fruits
20th century scientiests agree that 3 things combined that make things fly;
1. Lift Force = Aircrafts have wings to generate this
2. Thrust/Power = Engines are mounted to generate this
3. Fluid/Air Mechanics - natural phenomena = One of the reason why there are lots of instruments in the cockpits is to assess/measure the fluid/air characteristics (pressure, airspeed etc) in which the aircraft flies and by controlling the Lift & Thrust, you'll have steady controlable flight...
- Lift and Thrust work "interchangably"; to gain lift you'll need thrust, but if you're lowering thrust and expanding the wing area (flaps down), you'll get same lift magnitude and all are based on fluid characteristics at a point of time -

[Al Mulk (The Sovereignty, Control):19] Do they not observe the birds above them, spreading their wings and folding them in? None can uphold them except ((Allah)) Most Gracious: Truly ((Allah)) Most Gracious: Truly it is He that watches over all things
It talks about birds above us = flying
1. It mentions wings = Generating Lift
2. It mentions spreading and folding wings = Generating Thrust/Power
3. As for the words "None can uphold them except ((Allah)) Most Gracious", it reflects the natural system/mechanism, the behaviour of fluid/air that is, which like any other "natural" systems/mechanisms are Allah's creations.
There you go, 7th Century Book talking about 20th Century Science of the requirements to make things fly... Subhanallah!
Not sure? try to make paper airplane (we've done it alot when we were kid), see what the main feature of the paper airplane, it is the wings (for lift generating), then throw it in the air (for thrust/power), and see how Allah's creation (fluid mechanics) uphold the paper airplane on the air for awhile... until it lost its thrust... flying will stop as you loosen one of the requirements...
