I learned this recently and it has motivated me to make more dua's than I have ever before.
Let's say you ask Allah for a 1000$:
Allah will then:
- Give you the $1000 or
- Save you from a paying $1000 in the future, such as receiving a $1000 fine, or a medical bill or your house falling apart etc. or
- [Allah is all knowing.] So, if the $1000 will harm you more than benefit you, then he will give you the 1000$ in jannah, meaning that he will replace it with good deads and raise your status in paradise (if you do not know this, there's like 99 levels, and the prophets and companions are in the first heaven - the highest in degree).
