a Flat Earth?

Is is true that Shaykh Bin Baz, in his al-Adilla al-Naqliyya wa al-Hissiyya `ala Jarayan al-Shamsi wa Sukuni al-Ard ("The Transmitted and Sensory Proofs of the Rotation of the Sun and Stillness of the Earth"), asserted that the earth was flat and disk-like and that the sun revolved around it?

i dont want to start a debate about this topic because it has nothing to do with out aqeedah.

but just for a few information. What think our scholars about it?What dr. zakir naik said i know it, but want to know some quotes of famous scholars.

Those shaykh's are humans and subject to error, the quran is not on the otherhand. As science increases our understanding of the quran increases and we see a cleare picture. For instance Ibn kathir in his commentary regarding the the verse " the heavens we have built it with power and we are surely expanding"..in his time it was impossible to conceive and understand the notion of the expansion of the universe..he thought it was the sky that was expanding and he put a question mark on it, other commentators did the same. Now most comentators see that the verse is in fact a scientific miracle.

some people refused to accept the photographs as evidence, saying that they are concocted by the Kuffar. or there are reasons to doubt some things (like the moon landing) !

Thats silly, the quran itself desribes the earth as ostrich shape and desribes the land as spreadout.

what I know that it is a lie. What shiekh Ibn Bazz said that those who deny that the sun is moving have rejected the text o the Quran. We now know that the sun is moving.

The secularists disingeniuosly concluded from this that he said the sun is moving and the earth is not (which he did noy say). As this is a medieval belief, others spread the rumour about the earth being flat.

Muslims scholars knew long ago that the earth is spherical and that the sun, moon, earth and cosmic objects move in circular orbits because this is simply compatible with the Quran.

but what mean the headlines of this book"al-Adilla al-Naqliyya wa al-Hissiyya `ala Jarayan al-Shamsi wa Sukuni al-Ard ("The Transmitted and Sensory Proofs of the Rotation of the Sun and Stillness of the Earth")

I personally didn´t get that book and it would be better if someone can clearify more about this book.

jazakallahu khair in advance.

bro, can you verify that this book was really authoured by the sheikh ?

the title mean: the narrated and tangible proofs in the sun being mobile and the earth being stationary. The title is neutral to the earth being stationary or not. Dont judge a book by the cover !!

I've never heard of this book but I know this rumour is wide spread. It is a lie & I know this from trust worthy sources.

This is from Wikipedia, not the best source in the world, nevertheless:

One influential modern Muslim jurist has been said to have claimed that the earth is flat, and that anyone who denies this is an unbeliever. Ibn Baz, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, was a traditionally educated cleric who suffered from blindness. In 1993, he is said to have issued a fatwa, or religious ruling, declaring, "The Earth is flat. Whoever claims it is round is an atheist deserving of punishment."[42]Youssef M. Ibrahim, "Muslim Edicts Take on New Force", New York Times, February 12, 1995.

While the edict reportedly caused embarrassment for many Saudis, Ibn Baz issued a statement maintaining that the earth was spherical but expansive enough to be flat(Audio recording of Ibn Baz - Binbaz.org. Translation provided below)

-The question and answer was translated by Aqeel Walker, a former translator for Darussalam Publications in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia:

Introduction: The following letter reached the program (broadcast program) from Kenya, sent by our brother, the student, Ibraheem Muhammad Al-Awwal. The brother says, "I heard the program Nurun 'alad-Darb (A Light upon the Path) and I benefited greatly from it. Therefore, I wanted to send these questions to you all because their topics are very perplexing to me. The first is: Is the earth round or flat?"

Shaikh Bin Baz: According to the people knowledge (scholars of Islaam) the earth is round, for indeed Ibn Hazim and a group of other scholars mentioned that there is a consensus (unanimous agreement, Ijmaa') among the people of knowledge that it is round. This means that all of it is connected together thus making the form of the entire planet like a ball. However, Allaah has spread out surface for us and He has placed firm mountains upon it and placed the animals and the seas upon it as a mercy for us. For this reason, Allaah said: "And (do they not look) at the Earth, how it was made FLAT (Sutihat)." [Al-Ghaashiyyah (88):20]

Therefore, it (the Earth) has been made flat for us in regards to its surface, so that people can live on it and so that people can be comfortable upon it. The fact that it is round does not prevent that its surface has been made flat. This is because something that is round and very large, if it is made flat (its surface), then its surface will become very vast or broad (i.e. having a flat appearance). Yes."

i dont trust personally this translation. it would be better if anybody could hear that audio and translate it here.

sheikh Baz strongly denied that claim, describing the allegation as a "pure lie" and saying that he only denied Earth's rotation. [21] [22]

Supporters of Ibn Baz said that the book in which the flat earth claim was supposed to have been laid out does not exist, and that the entire controversy was based on one interview with Egyptian journalists. They said that Ibn Baz, as he clarified later, was referring to the surface of earth that we walk on being flat although he believed the Earth to be spherical

Jazak Allahu khayran Brother for bringing up this topic. Lots of people have this misconception about Shaikh Ibn Baz (may Allah SWT reward him and have mercy on him)

Here is Sheikh Ibn Bâz’s fatwâ on the matter:

According to the people of knowledge the Earth is round. Indeed, Ibn Hazm and other scholars have declared that there is consensus on this matter among the people of knowledge This means that all of the surface of the Earth is connected together so that the form of the planet is like a sphere. Nevertheless, Allah has spread out the Earth's surface in relation to us, and He has placed upon it firm mountains, the seas, and life as a mercy for us. For this reason, Allah said:

"And (do they not look) at the Earth, how it was spread out flat (sutihat)." [Sûrah al-Ghâshiyah:20]

Therefore, the Earth has been made flat for us in regards to our relationship to it to facilitate our lives upon it and our comfort. The fact that it is round does not prevent that its surface has been made flat for us. This is because something that is round and very large, then its surface will become very vast or broad, having a flat appearance to those who are upon it."

This is the fatwâ of Sheikh Ibn Bâz about the shape of the Earth. So do not listen to those who lie against him and try to make it seem as though he was some "old fool" who did not even know that the Earth is round. Such people are liars and slanderers. At best, they are rumor mongers who narrate whatever they hear without verification the accuracy of what they say. As the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"It is sufficient to consider a man a liar when he narrates everything that he hears." [Sahîh Muslim]
