I, being used to be taught about geometry, found this particular hadith difficult to accept in my mind.

Volume 4, Book 54, Number 421:
Narrated Abu Dhar:

The Prophet asked me at sunset, "Do you know where the sun goes (at the time of sunset)?" I replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He said, "It goes (i.e. travels) till it prostrates Itself underneath the Throne and takes the permission to rise again, and it is permitted and then (a time will come when) it will be about to prostrate itself but its prostration will not be accepted, and it will ask permission to go on its course but it will not be permitted, but it will be ordered to return whence it has come and so it will rise in the west. And that is the interpretation of the Statement of Allah: "And the sun Runs its fixed course For a term (decreed). that is The Decree of (Allah) The Exalted in Might, The All-Knowing." (36.38)

What is the meaning of this hadith?

The keys words to watch out for are 'prostrates' and 'beneath the Throne'

Prosrate

There are verses in the Quran which state that everything bow down and worship Allah. Of course Sun, Moon and other created things don't worship in the sense as Human do.

"They say: "God hath begotten a son" :Glory be to Him.-Nay, to Him belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth: everything renders worship to Him. (2:116)"

Seest thou not that to God bow down in worship all things that are in the heavens and on earth,- the sun, the moon, the stars; the hills, the trees, the animals; and a great number among mankind? But a great number are (also) such as are fit for Punishment: and such as God shall disgrace,- None can raise to honour: for God carries out all that He wills. (22:18)"

Beneath the Throne

The Hadith does not state beneath the earth, rather it states beneath the throne. So it is subject to interpretations.

And they ask you (O Muhammad SAW) concerning the Rooh (the Spirit); Say: "The Rooh (the Spirit): it is one of the things, the knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little." (17:85)"[/B]

And Allah swt knows best.

to Allah we belong
prophet (saws) maybe wanted to explain to his companions (ra) that Allah Has power over all things.

he might not intend to explain a scientific principle.
