a sailor needs help

dear brothers and sisters,
insha allah i am gonna be a sailor. i already have sailed for five months as a trainee. as that was my first sailing time i had great difficulties in performing my salaat. this is only due to lack of knowledge and guidance. so i am here to seek them

the problems i faced are as follows:
1. this is one of my greatest challenge. i.e., finding quiblah... as we all know, the vessel (ship) may change its direction and the position of the ship also varies with time. so i fail terrible in doing it...
2. next comes the timing. it was too hard for me to find out the prayer time of asr and isha (with varying timezones and seasons)
3. i heard that when we sail around northern europe during winter, sun stays only for a shorter period. (i had not experienced it myself, though). how to perform salah there?

i have a meager knowledge about the privilege given to a traveler. but i dont have a good knowledge about it. what are they?
my longest voyage will be 20 days... i.e from one port to another port.
so am i allowed to combine two salah and perform as one? if so how can i do it?

is there any fellow sailor/mariner/seaman in this community to help me out? (jus because a sailor can understand my situation better)

i think its too many questions to answer. but i hope i can find some good advices from my brothers/sisters here.

Salam

Hmm You might want to buy a compass that gives you the location of the Qiblah. It will point toward the Qiblah.

Also if you use universal time you should be able to figure out the time of the day in your present location, and hence offer the Salah accordingly.

I g2g to the Masjid for Salah, but when I come back, Insallah I will post you some links..

If u have Nokia N Series mobile phone,u can get a free compass software that shows u where to pray.I hav tried it,but i dont kno whether its correct or not, as its in Arabic(i think),and because im not a Muslim..

Those links were awesome... Thanks a lot for ur efforts...:ma: I already got a compass like that. A very useful tool indeed. But it is good only on land. Its a little complicated tool to use at sea...

well... there are some other ways by which one can find quiblah at sea. the problem is that these ways are little tougher. i came to know that if a person is not sure of the qiblah direction, then that person may choose a direction and offer salah. is that true??? are there any hadith which support this practice?

the links u have provided were amazing... it helped a lot. thanks a lot for ur efforts. and as a matter of fact i already bought that compass. a very good tool indeed. but it is good only on land. at sea it is rather complicated to use. but we have few other methods to find quiblah at sea. the problem with that method is that they are a little tougher.

I suppose magnetic compass would be more useful on the sea? I know very little about such things.

Please brothers and sisters on TTI if you can please do contribute to this thread, so the brother can find a better way to offer Salah

assalamualaikum,
my cousin used to be a sailor. according to him whenever he wanted to pray he only based on the lange of his own shadow but he did'nt specific about that n for wanting to know the location of ka'bah, just see the direction of the sun sets.
to pray while on journey, we are allowed to combine the dzuhr & asr as one time pray (2 raka'at for dzuhr n 2raka'at for asr) but depend on how far our location is. if we perform during dzuhr it is called jama' takdeem n if we perform during asr it is called jama' tak'khir. while traveling on sea or air during praying i suggest u recite only Surah AlFatehah as it is compulsory.
so sorry for unable to help u much brother....

What about using "Google Earth/Google Map"? I Think you can draw a straight line from Ka'bah to your position located (maybe, because I never use Google Earth/Google Map on a sea before). But if in the progress you still hardly can't find Ka'bah direction, you can face to every direction you like when you take a shalat, because you can find Allah's "face" everywhere.

You can set your own shalat time by looking at the sunset, sunrise, or your shadow, which is much easier on the sea, because you can see the horizon.
