As'alaamu Alaikkum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu
Before Islam the city of Jerusalem was the focal point of the believers of Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala. The city was blessed along with the Prophet Ibraheem (pbuh) whom Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala called His friend, and then the sons of Israel who dwelt there and they called themselves the chosen people of God.

And who turns away from the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) (i.e. Islamic Monotheism) except him who befools himself? Truly, We chose him in this world and verily, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous.
When his Lord said to him, "Submit (i.e. be a Muslim)!" He said, "I have submitted myself (as a Muslim) to the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)."
And this (submission to Allah, Islam) was enjoined by Ibrahim (Abraham) upon his sons and by Ya'qub (Jacob), (saying), "O my sons! Allah has chosen for you the (true) religion, then die not except in the Faith of Islam (as Muslims - Islamic Monotheism)."
Or were you witnesses when death approached Ya'qub (Jacob)? When he said unto his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We shall worship your Ilah (God - Allah), the Ilah (God) of your fathers, Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma'il (Ishmael), Ishaque (Isaac), One Ilah (God), and to Him we submit (in Islam)."
That was a nation who has passed away. They shall receive the reward of what they earned and you of what you earn. And you will not be asked of what they used to do. 2:130-134
Due to their continuing disbelief and disobedience Allah subhana Wa T’ala turned away from them and cursed them. Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala says in the Holy Qur’an that He chooses a people to Himself as He pleases. Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala made a covenant with Ibraheem (pbuh) and promised that his progeny will be chosen.
Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) is a descendant of Prophet Isma’il therefore a descendant of Ibraheem (pbuh). When the Jews and Christians perverted the message of Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala He chose a new people to Himself from the line of Ibraheem (pbuh).
Thus We have made you [true Muslims - real believers of Islamic Monotheism, true followers of Prophet Muhammad SAW and his Sunnah (legal ways)], a Wasat (just) (and the best) nation, that you be witnesses over mankind and the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) be a witness over you. And We made the Qiblah (prayer direction towards Jerusalem) which you used to face, only to test those who followed the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) from those who would turn on their heels (i.e. disobey the Messenger). Indeed it was great (heavy) except for those whom Allah guided. And Allah would never make your faith (prayers) to be lost (i.e. your prayers offered towards Jerusalem). Truly, Allah is full of kindness, the Most Merciful towards mankind.
Verily! We have seen the turning of your (Muhammad’s SAW) face towards the heaven. Surely, We shall turn you to a Qiblah (prayer direction) that shall please you, so turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid- al-Haram (at Makkah). And wheresoever you people are, turn your faces (in prayer) in that direction. Certainly, the people who were given the Scriptures (i.e. Jews and the Christians) know well that, that (your turning towards the direction of the Ka’bah at Makkah in prayers) is the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do.
And even if you were to bring to the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) all the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they would not follow your Qiblah (prayer direction), nor are you going to follow their Qiblah (prayer direction). And they will not follow each other's Qiblah (prayer direction). Verily, if you follow their desires after that which you have received of knowledge (from Allah), then indeed you will be one of the Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers, etc.). 2:143-145
Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) continued the tradition of facing Jerusalem whilst praying, then after the revelations were complete he was ordered by Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala to face the Ka’baa when praying thus establishing Mecca as a holy city. This also marks the turning point in Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala choosing a new people to Himself. He was essentially discarding the Jews and choosing a new people who will later be called Muslims. For example, Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala calls all of His prophets as Muslims therefore all the people who were submitting to the Will of Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala were Muslims, just that they had never identified themselves as such. Muslims are the new chosen people of God and Islam is His religion that was established for his new people. Like the shifting of the focus of worship from Jerusalem to Mecca, the new focus is on the new chosen people of Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala.
