ADOPT A SUNNAH 6

Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] is reported to have said, ‘Salaat is the best act that was ordained, whoever is able to perform it in abundance should do so.’ (Musnad Ahmad vol.5 pg.265; Hadith22189)

Salaat establishes a bond between a person and Almighty Allah. Imaam Bakr ibn Abdullaah al-Muzani [ra] has mentioned that a Muslim is able to communicate directly with Allah whenever he wishes through Salaat. (al-Matjarur-raabih pg.60). The abundant performing of Nafl Salaat draws a person closer to his Creator (Sahih Bukhari Hadith6502). One should try and develop an inner love for Salaat, which will induce him to use every opportunity to engage in Nafl Salaat. Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] said, ‘The coolness of my eyes is in Salaat.’ (Musnad Ahmad vol.3 pg.128; Hadith12234) It was the frequent practise of Rasulullah r to perform Salaat at every opportunity, that included the opportunity of performing Salaat while riding on his conveyance. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar [Radhiallaahu anhuma] reports that Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] would perform (Nafl) Salaat while on his conveyance when he would be out of the town. (Sahih Bukhari Hadith1096; Sahih Muslim Hadith1608, 1616)

The Fuqahaa (Jurists) have mentioned that the practise of performing Salaat in one’s conveyance (vehicle) is encouraged. (Tahtaawi pg.221; Qadeemi). This has also been and is the practise of our Akaabir (senior) Ulama [ra]. While performing Nafl Salaat in one’s vehicle, the following should be borne in mind:

One may sit and perform Nafl Salaat in one’s vehicle only when one is out of the town. (Shaami vol.2 pg.38-39; HM Sa’eed)
It is not necessary for the person performing Nafl Salaat in a vehicle to be a Shar’ee Musaafir (undertake a journey of 88 kms or more). (Ibid; Tahtawi pg.221)
It is not necessary to face the Qiblah when performing Salaat in the vehicle. (Sahih Bukhari Hadith1096; Shaami vol.2 pg.39)
Besides the direction of the Qiblah, one may face the direction in which the vehicle is moving and no other direction. (Shaami vol.2 pg.39; Aalamgiri vol.1 pg.142 - Rashidiyyah)
This Salaat could be performed with shoes as long as there are no impurities on them. (Ibid)
The Ruku and Sajdah should be made by lowering the head (it should be lower in Sajdah than in Ruku). (Sunan Abi Dawud Hadith1220) One should not make Ruku or Sajdah by placing the head on anything. (Aalamgiri vol.1 pg.143)
The driver could also perform this Salaat as long as he does not endanger his life or the lives of his passengers. (Shaami vol.2 pg.39; Aalamgiri vol.1 pg.143)
Note: One who wishes to perform this Salaat should obviously be in the state of Wudhu.

We encourage you to adopt this Sunnah of Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam]
