Asalaamu alaikum -

This past Friday our shaykh gave such an amazing khutbah that half the masjid was in tears (and he himself was crying). He gave two ahadith, they were similar in meaning and I think had the same people involved. The topic of the khutbah was Al-Siddiq of Abu Bakr.

The first hadith the skaykh mentioned was about Abu Bakr r.a. coming to the Prophet s.a.w all upset. When the Prophet s.a.w. asked him what was wrong, Abu Bakr r.a. said that he had said a bad word to another Companion who's name I can't recall from the khutbah. Abu Bakr said he asked the other Companion to forgive him, and the other companion said "no". Three times he asked, and on the third time the other Companion closed the door in Abu Bakr's face.

The Prophet s.a.w. went to the other Companion's house to speak to him, and was told that he had gone to the masjid. So the Prophet s.a.w. went to the masjid and when he stepped in and saw the Companion his face twisted in anger. The Companion came and sat in front of the Prophet s.a.w., but Rasulullah s.a.w. turned away from him. The Companion tried again, but again the Messenger of Allah s.a.w. turned away. Again the third time he tried to sit in front of the Prophet s.a.w. and on the third time again he s.a.w. turned away. Finally the Companion cried out, "O Messenger of Allah! My life is worth nothing if you turn your face away from me!"

The Prophet s.a.w replied with "Is that not what you did to your brother? You turned away from him when he asked forgiveness? Not one of my Companions wronged me but that I forgave him, yet you are better than the Messenger of Allah and won't forgive your brother?"

Forgive me as I am doing this from memory, and our shaykh's English is shaky (pardon the pun) but is better than my Arabic so I am probably off a bit here.

But if someone can tell me where I can find this full hadith and what the name of the other Companion was I would be very grateful.

jazakAllah Khairyn!

wa 'alaykum salaam wa rahmatullah

This is the closest to the hadeeth you described that I found akhi... It's a bit different though, but the basis seems the same as yours.

Narrated Abu Ad-Darda: There was a dispute between Abu Bakr and 'Umar, and Abu Bakr made Umar angry. So 'Umar left angrily. Abu Bakr followed him, requesting him to ask forgiveness (of Allah) for him, but 'Umar refused to do so and closed his door in Abu Bakr's face. So Abu Bakr went to Allah's Apostle while we were with him. Allah's Apostle said, "This friend of yours must have quarrelled (with somebody)." In the meantime 'Umar repented and felt sorry for what he had done, so he came, greeted (those who were present) and sat with the Prophet and related the story to him. Allah's Apostle became angry and Abu Bakr started saying, "O Allah's Apostle! By Allah, I was more at fault (than Umar)." Allah's Apostle said, "Are you (people) leaving for me my companion? (Abu Bakr), Are you (people) leaving for me my companion? When I said, 'O people I am sent to you all as the Apostle of Allah,' you said, 'You tell a lie.' while Abu Bakr said, 'You have spoken the truth ." (Sahih Bukhari - Book #60, Hadith #164)

I'm afraid I am not sure about the rest, but I hope this comes of a little benefit inshaAllaah.
