exalted Allah (c.c) punish who are important for Allah (c.c) only. You can actually say its warn. For example imagine a valuable person for you,you love him/her so much, but you see that doing very important mistake. That mistake will affect her/his future exactly you see.You will do everything to stop him/her.Maybe your warn way hurt her/him but at last if he/she gets ur aim that time will be thankful.

Events like these could be a punishment or test from Allah swt.

It could be punishment for all.
It could be a test for all.
It could be punishment for some and test for others.

And Allah knows best!

Allah SWT will not punish us if we obey him.

I do not have enough knowledge to tell you if the Tsunami for example is Allah's punishment. I THINK(again, I do not know) it is not because also many good muslim's were killed/hurt in the Tsunami for example.

I agree with brother "mhamzah".

When a disaster strike, it will not see good muslim or bad muslim, everyone will be wiped out including kuffr. Ulama here believe the tsunami is punishment and a warning to both muslim and disbelievers. They have reason to support their claim...even ordinary laymen will agree because when they visited the affected area they know why Allah sent tsunami (sorry, I do not want to elaborate to respect the family of the victims). Good muslim will die as a syuhada....you may want to verify this. Our rescuers confirmed having pulled out many dead bodies which are still not yet decomposed though it was already weeks after the disaster. Some still bleeding...Allahu'alaam.

Amazingly, many mosques was not touch by the tsunami and land animals managed to escape as well. It seems the animals already knew there going to be a disaster. In south Thailand, elephants which was used for tour ride refused to obey its master and ran up the hill and refused to come down. Soon after, tsunami struck the coastal area where the elephants used to carry tourist. In my country, eye witnesses said they saw the tsunami rushing to their coastal village but when it "saw" a mosque, it break into two and sparred the mosque. It's a miracle and sign from Allah for us to ponder and think...now it is slowly being forgotten though when it struck we cry in every prayers asking protection from Allah.

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {Then as for him whose balance (of good deeds) will be heavy, He will live a pleasant life (in Paradise). But as for him whose balance (of good deeds) will be light, He will have his home in Hawiyah (pit, i.e. Hell). And what will make you know what it is? (It is) a hot blazing Fire!}[101:6-11]. Allah also Says (interpretation of meaning): {…So as for those whose scale (of good deeds) will be heavy, they will be the successful (by entering Paradise).}[7:8]. He also Says: {And those whose scales (of good deeds) are light, they are those who lose their ownselves, in Hell will they abide.}[23:103].
Also, it is mentioned in the Qur'an: {… So as for those whose scale (of good deeds) will be heavy, they will be the successful (by entering Paradise). And as for those whose scale will be light, they are those who will lose their ownselves (by entering Hell) because they denied and rejected Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)}[7:8-9].
Ibn Abbas said: good and bad deeds will be weighed in the Scale that has a tongue and two pans. A believer will be brought forward in a good state with his deeds, and when his deeds are put in one of the pans, it becomes heavier than the other. This is mentioned in the verse: {…So as for those whose scale (of good deeds) will be heavy, they will be the successful (by entering Paradise).}[7:8]. The deeds of an unbeliever will be brought in a bad repulsive state, and when they will be put in the pan of the scale; they will have no weight, and ultimately he will be thrown in the Fire (Hell). [ al-Qurtubi ]
al-Tabri reported from Ibn Masoud that he said: all people will be called to their account on the Day of Judgment. Even if the good deeds of the person surpass his bad deeds by only one good deed, he will enter Paradise. Likewise only one bad deed more, entitles the person to enter the Fire (Hell). And the one whose good and bad deeds are equal will be among the people of A'araf .
The sum of the details mentioned so far is that the people will be of many kinds as far as the matter of weighing the deeds is concerned.
First, those who will enter the Paradise without reckoning, deeds of such category will not be weighed at all (Sahihain).
Second, Kuffars (disbelievers), their deeds will have no weight in the scale. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {And We shall turn to whatever deeds they (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, etc.) did, and We shall make such deeds as scattered floating particles of dust. }[25:23].
Allah also Says (interpretation of meaning): {…So their works are in vain, and on the Day of Resurrection, We shall not give them any weight. }[18:105].
Third, those people whose good deeds will surpass the bad deeds thus they will enter the Paradise.
Fourth, those people whose bad deeds will have more weight than the good ones; they will enter the Fire (Hell) and stay there to the extent of their bad deeds. Finally they will go to the Paradise.
Fifth, those people whose deeds will be weighed, and their good deeds will be equal to their bad ones; their destination will be al-A'araf.
The final abode of these people also will be the Paradise since only Paradise and Hell will last forever.
Allah knows best.

no mosques were destroyed in the tsunami. see them on youtube yourself.

why does Allah send tsunami or earthquakes? People say He is Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem

He is also Al-Jabbar, Al-Qahaar . He can do whatever He wants. He is the Master

I'm not saying no mosque but "many mosques" was not destroyed by tsunami. I'm very close with the place where the tragedy happened which my own country also slightly was washed away but so far never heard any mosque was destroyed except minor damages. Allahu 'alam.

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله

All kind of hardship in this life can be punishment in advance for our sins, or a test from Allah to see how faithful we are.
It is believed that SOME punishments in this life, is to prevents us from being punished at the hereafter, If we face this kind of punishment with faith and patience.

(Quran:2) And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sâbirun (the patient) (155) Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: "Truly! To Allâh we belong and truly, to Him we shall return." (156) They are those on whom are the Salawât (i.e. who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided-ones. (157)

(Quran:47) And surely, We shall try you till We test those who strive hard (for the Cause of Allâh) and As-Sabirun (the patient ones), and We shall test your facts (i.e. the one who is a liar, and the one who is truthful). (31)

Just know that, no matter how hard this life can be, It can never be any harder than the judgement day, not even close.
