The word "alms" has no singular, as if to teach us that a solitary act of charity scarcely deserves the name. Water will quench a flaming fire; and alms makes an atonement for sins. If you have abundance, give alms accordingly; if you have but little, be not afraid to give according to that little

خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِمْ بِهَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ صَلاتَكَ سَكَنٌ لَهُمْ وَاللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
Of their goods take alms,so thou mightest purify and sanctify them; and pray on their behalf, verily thy prayers are a source of security for them: and Allah is the One Who heareth and knoweth.
