As-salaam Alaikum,

According to Arab News : JEDDAH, 15 January 2008

The historic day of Ashura or 10th of Muharram this year falls on Friday (Jan. 18), according to Sheikh Saleh Al-Laheedan, chairman of the Supreme Judiciary Council. He said the Hijri month of Muharram began on Wednesday (Jan. 9). Fasting on Muharram 9 and 10 has been encouraged by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In Islamic history Muslims have achieved several victories on the day of Ashura.

I hope all of you in sha Allah fine and doing well

Brothers and sisters, Allah give us many chances to get more rewards and
forgiveness our sins and mistakes. These chances are special days,
if we do good in these days Allah will give us many rewards and
forgive our sins and mistakes. The wise man whom exploiting these
days and doing his best.

Muharam 10th is one important day. Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) fasted
this day, and he (PBUH) said; by Fasting of this day Allah (SWT) erase the
sins and mistakes of the past year. (cited in Muslim)

Therefore, I hope all of us fast this day in Sha Allah.

Muharam 10th will be on friday (18/1/2008) in Sha Allah.

There are three grades of rewards in Sha Allah

Mximum rewards, fast 3 days, i.e. Thursday, friday and Sat.
Medium, Thruday and Friday
Lowest, Friday only.

I hope in Sha Allah all the brothers and sisters get the maximum rewards.

Asalaamu'Alykum,

I am quite confused, according to my clock the 10th of Muharram is on Friday. I will be fasting on this day unless something changes. Is that correct?

Alhamdulilah

Fast Thursday and Friday respectively!!!

There has been a big mix up.

The Arab News said that the Shaykh confirmed that the Month started on Wednesday the 9th of Jan!!!!!!!

However, by Wednesday they meant their Wednesday, which began on Tuesday after Maghrib. So the day of Ashooraa' falls on Friday.

The confusion has been due to at least 2 factors.

Firstly, many people do not understand how the Islamic/Lunar days work; that is the night begins and it's day follows, whereas we in the West think "day then night".

Secondly, the confusion of the news article in using Wednesday the 9th of Jan. Because they used the Gregorian date we assume(d) that by Wednesday they mean a day which starts at 12:00am/00:00hrs. However they are only using Wednesday as a translation of their "Yowm ul-Arba`aah", which as I said began on Tuesday at Maghrib.

I apologize for this inconvienience. I have deleted the above posts (which were necessary) and hope that we can clarify to everyone that fasting on the 9th and 10th does indeed mean Thursday and Friday.

So can a person fast on Saturday if they missed the Thursday one? Yes or No
The threads are not clear.

I've not seen it's probition, and I remember reading last year that if the 9th and 10th can't be achieved, then fast the 10th and 11th. I know many brothers who are concerned with knowledge of the deen who do this (i.e. those who will act upon evidences).

If I were you I would. I have done it before and if next year I'm still live and well but miss the 9th, I'll fast the 10th and 11th since there is no prohibition and I'm doing it to follow the sunnah by differing from the Jews.

salamu alaykum

In sunan abu dawood classes by a brother having ijaaza of shaykh safiurrahman mubarakpuri in kutubu sitta we went through the hadeeth about ashoora and i asked him just to make sure if we can fast the 10th and 11th in which he didnt say yes but said that the sunnah is 9th and the 10th. And it is very clear from the hadeeth that resulllah svs mentioned the 9th and 10th to be different from the jews. He sv.s could have mentioned 10th and 11th, or say day before or day after. And even though u decide not to fast 9th or 11th but only the 10th, there is inshaAllah no harm in that. The reason why resulullah wanted to fast the 9th is to be opposite of the jews. He sv.s did always everything opposite of the jews and christians but muslims follow them step by step even if they were to enter the lizzard whole, they would follow them. Anyways, this is not a fatwa, if you have a fatwa of a respected shaykh of ahlusunnah wal jamah then plizz post it here.

Jazaak Allah khayr, and may Allaah's mercy be on the Shaykh. I know its not a fatwa, that is what I'm trying to avoid. But what I'm saying is sometimes we can't make the fast for example, and hence I choose to make it on the saturday. Apparently Ahmad Ibn Hanbal rahimahullaah, said to fast either a day before or after the 10th to differ from the Jews. The only reference I have being, `Awm al-Ma`bood?
