Beating your kids

Asaalamalikum,

I know this might sound a little funny: I'm not a bully/abuser or anything, but are we allowed to beat/spank our kids or other little kids?

I think some kids need to get disciplined, especially these days. I remember my mom use to chase me around the dinner table with a shoe or sometimes I would run to the bathroom and lock it, and she would bang on the door constantly and say "Come out, I won't hit you" but as soon as I got out, she gave it to me! However, when I contemplate, it really did help and discipline me--so thanks mom!!

I know the Prophet (saw) didn't beat up his kids. So what are our limitation and how far can we go? It probably depends on the child.

well it best to use the spanking as plan b and not to go the source of hitting before speaking to a child on what and what not to do. you need to set the rules and be a good rolemodel before anything and limitation and guidelines for the child. sheikh siraj wahaj speaks of his childhood when one day he family had to get ready for church. so he said to his mother "mama why we got to go church every sunday anyhow?" his mother got a shoe and whooped him good (hard) and replied "now do you see why you gotta got to church every sunday?" and siraj wahaj the child said "yes i understand" although he didn't. he said he waited until he was eighteen (or when ever he moved from home) and he never went back to church. alhamudilllaah that is what brought sheikh wahaj to islam, but it doesn't usually work out for the good for children who are already in the process of being raised as muslims. there was the guy who was whipped beyond limits by his quran teacher who left islam by turning to christian ministers (but he did return at many years later).

well anyways point is set limits and guidelines before anything and let beating not be the first thing you go to you shoud instead speak to the child. and last but not least there is a difference between discipline and child abuse!!!!!! don't be like the mother who called her child "it".

Salaam aleikum

I dont believe in beating, and i think even a tap on the hand can limit to abuse. They dont learn anything from that, apart from that violence is okay.

Gentle Discipline all the way in my home! Alhamdulillah!

Check this fatwa I read a while back.

Ruling on Hitting Children
Author: Sheikh Muhammad Naasir Ad-Deen Al-Albaani

Is it permissible to hit children as a form of discipline?
Author: Sheikh Muhammad Naasir ad-Deen al-Albaani

Question: "The teacher may sometimes turn to hitting in order to discipline
is student. Firstly, is it permissible to hit the student? Secondly, is it permissible to hit him in the face?"

Answer: "As far as hitting in the face, this is not permissible due to the
statement of the Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him, "Do
not hit the face and do not defigure." Regarding the second part, is
it permissible to hit the student in general as a means of
discipline; the answer must make mention of the statement of the
Prophet, "Command your children to pray when they reach the age of
seven and hit them if they leave it off when they reach the age of
ten and separate them from each other in the beds."

"In this hadith is a proof that for the student, rather the child,
whether he is a student or not, it is not permissible for the one in
charge of him to hit him due to his deficiency in obeying the
commands until he reaches the age of ten. Command your children to
pray when they reach the age of seven and hit them if they leave it
off when they reach the age of ten and separate them from each other
in the beds. Without a doubt, the Hukm (ruling) or Ahimiyah
(importance) of whatever knowledge any teacher wants to present to
his students will not be equal to the importance of prayer.
Therefore, if the Prophet himself prohibits the father from hitting
his child due to not praying, until he reaches the age of ten, then
with all the more reason, it is not permissible for other than the
>father (from those in charge) to hit the children for something
other than leaving off the salah until he reaches the age of ten.
Thus, it is not permissible for the teacher to hit the child even if
he did not obey him regarding the salah. What else exists from the
other affairs that are as important as the Salah. "In this
connection, I would like to also add that the age of puberty for
girls and boys differs tremendously from country to country. I know
that in general, in countries of warm climate, the hormones may
mature at a faster rate; thus the age of takleef (duty:
obligation to observe precepts of religion) would be reached at an
earlier age than it would in a colder climate. Then this rule should
not be taken in a general way but rather each country should study
the children or it should be done in a more detailed way. For example
one would find out whether this particular child reached the age of
>puberty or is he still in childhood? So whatever seems to
predominate from this study, the hukm (ruling) would be decided."

He was then asked: "With regards to hitting, if the child had bad
banners and hit.." Sheikh Al-Albaani began saying:

"There is no hitting, no hitting at all. Rather there is directing,
advising and speech. Sometimes words have a greater affect on people
than hitting. In addition, hitting with some people does not help at
all, rather it makes them continue on what their upon more and more.
What is important is that the best of all guidance is the guidance of
Muhammad, may peace and blessings be upon him. Thus the child is not
to be hit so long that he did not reach the age of puberty.

"On this note, I understand from the gradual teaching of the Prophet
that was previously mentioned in the hadith, 'Command your children
to pray . ' to the end of the hadith, I understand from this hadith
that it is wrong what I see take place with many fathers. He commands
his child to pray before reaching the age of seven. This is
opposition to the commandment of the Prophet, may peace and blessings
be upon him. 'Command your children to pray when they reach the age
of seven.' That is why it is not appropriate for the Muslim to put
the commandment in effect before what the Prophet defined initially.
It is ok for the father to permit his child to come along with him to
pray with him in the masjid. But as far as him telling him, "Come
here, get up, go make wudoo' and pray." and the child has not yet
reached the age of seven, this is opposition to this hadith, so I
just wanted to remind you all of that."

He was also asked: "Sheikh, regarding hitting, sometimes you find
students leave their houses and have no manners, even good advice
does not benefit them, so does hitting them fall into necessity?"

Sheikh Al-Albaani replied:
"There is no necessity, where is the necessity here. Can you
comprehend that hitting would benefit when the One who created him
said, do not hit him until he reaches the age of seven."

Islam." by: Sheikh Al-Albaani

However, when this question was asked to Dr. Saleh as Saleh in his paltalk class, "Understanding Islam," he answered that it IS permissible to use spanking as a form of discipline if it is used as a last resort and done gently. So, this matter needs further elaboration. -Maryam

I don't have any kids...yet, but when i was young I was sent to my room a lot! I was spanked every now and then. I'm not sure if it was of any harm or benefit, I just remember really thinking about what I did when I wasn't allowed to play with my friends because i was stuck in my room

Islam is a moderate religion. I got it (shoe, belt, brush etc) real good from my mother. Masha Allah I love her very much. I truly believe it helped me to be a better person. Our Arabic teacher had a stick and he seemed to love using it, kids including myself were terrified going to his class. I believe his way was wrong. If we neglect to discipline our children, I think we are doing them a great injustice. 20 years ago kids in general had more respect for their elders. Parents or even teachers could discipline children with a spanking. Now it is against the law and kids are out of control. Children are beating up teachers in school and are getting bolder. Spanking in my view is beneficial if done at the appropriate time in an appropriate manner. I personally don't hit my kids, but I don't stop their mother:) . They know when I am disenchanted with them and Alhamdulillah they fall in line without me having to get physical. They may get it once or twice a year from me only when I think it is called for. Another point is a parent should not approach a child with anger, because this is what set the conditions for child abuse. If we abuse kids, it is oppression and Allah does not like oppression. If we leave them to go astray we are also responsible for their actions or non-actions (salaat etc.) These are only my opinion and I may be wrong. I know the question is asked from an Islamic point of view but I do not have the resources to substantiate my opinion, however, it is a good question and I wanted to put in my 2 cents.:)

Indeed the best of mankind, sal-Allaahu `alayhi wasallam never hit a woman, child or servant. He only fought in the way of Allaah. [from the hadith of `Aa'ishah]

Salaam,

I learned not to hit my children. I learned it is much easier to listen to the guidelines of Islam. If I am angry..I must change my physical posture..I need to control my emotions and distance myself. I learned sometimes it so much more rational to laugh.
I learned that children do know how to reason. I learned children do tell the truth. I learned to listen to my sons.
No, they still drive me crazy..they don't listen half the time, and do things in a haphazard manner...but in the end they come and hug me and tell me that they love me...and somethimes out of nowhere I will get a kiss..and sometimes I have night visitors who just want to get cumfy and cozy for a minute..
they do say their prayers...they attend masjid, they are attentive and respectuful to adults...they help everyone...
they taught me to respect them.
They are the gift of Allah to me. Of all my gifts they are the most precious...sometimes it is best to show my manners...

I just wanted to say that I find the effects of beating children very interesting.

What I mean is, in the US even if you spank your kid you could be charged with child abuse. There are some children who go through verbal, mental, or physical abuse in the West and come out mentally and emotionally scarred. On the other hand, I know a lot of people from the Middle East and Southeast Asia who were beaten quite a lot as children but are strongly devoted to their parents and love them very much without seeming to have any bad feelings towards them for the abuse or any real emotional damage.

I really don't know why this is, but it's very interesting to me to see the difference in attitude. The only reason I can come up with to explain this is that in the West, abusive parents are often neglectful parents and the abuse didn't really have to be in response to misbehavior, and perhaps in the other cultures the abuse is a direct punishment and otherwise the parents are loving, caring, and attentive.

Asalaamalikum,

lol good example. There is a thin line between discipline and child abuse. Hitting them is probably the last resort.

Good observation. Allaah knows best why. The point you made seems to hold, I come from a South Asian (or more specifically, South-Central Asian), background, and I got tha licks! I can't really think when they were really out of place though. Mind you many people praise my mum for how she raised me and my siblings saying that the discipline worked contrary to my paternal cousins who were/are pains in the butt.

What is definitely wrong is how the Barailwi's and (some) Deobandis beat the crap out of children. They say a single word in the masjed and THWACK. If they break their wudu then SMACK. If they don't recite Qur'aan correctly then CRACK!

It's sick, one of my close family friends use to learn to read the Qur'aan at my cousins. The "Imam" of misguidance broke a snooker cue on his back once, and that's the norm down here in East London. May Allaah curse them misguided deviants!

One time an "Imam" slapped my cousin in my face, so he replied, "It's haraam to hit one in the face". The "Imam" goes "NO IT AINT", so my cousin replied "Yes it is". So he replied "If you think it's haraam then get out!" And that's what he did! Lol at the time of narrating one brother goes "we should go hit him in the face and say " It isn't haraam?" and keep doin it till he testifies. Remember that it was only a joke lol.

Assalamu alaykum,

Well i agree beating children does help the child to be more mature but it also hurts i mean there is probably anything now i hate more than beating but it help make me the person i am today so am i going to beat my children up in the future even though i hate? YES cos i know it will help them grow and be more responsible for their action. But i also know that it may not work on them like it did on my but I consider part of growing up process!!

Hey guys, i believe a child needs to be disciplined and a dad has to do what a dad has to do (in my case, inshallah), if the advice falls on deaf ears.

Well, i will share something here.I am around 12 years older then my little sister, so when she was around 10, i was 22 and i had to beat her up with a stick cuz she wouldn't do her homework and it was authorized by our mother who could not run after the naughty tiddler:laughing-dancing:
I wasnt cruel on her but she cried a lot. Every stick that i laid on her left a mark on my heart, even the thought of that moment has brought tears in my eyes now. I guess i could never slap a kid, i love their innocent faces and naughty giggles so much that i just cant do it.

P.S. And Oh! me and my little sister love each other above any example.

Asalamu Alykum,

I used to get hit if i didnt read the Quran and i did cry a lot although it again seemed like a culture thing like read the Quran once and forget it. (Seems like no one bothered with the Sunnah back then) I never got hit if i didnt do my homework or schoolwork. Seemed like nobody cared back then and the only time anyone would get bothered is if school rang home. Thats used really bother me.

Alhamdulilah i started reading Quran thanks to Allah (S.W.T). I dont think its good to hit your children because it could bother them mentally later on.

Asslamo Allaikum,

I have taught kids and continue to do so till now & each child is different and react differently.

Some get frozen when you raise your voice; some consider you an ant till you raise your voice. I agree there is no reason to hit kids like they do in som Madaris (up and down the country).

Ya Allah!! did I get my fair share of beatings!! The belt, the hand, a tree branch!! My father was very strict, and to this day, I thank him for it. It made me a stronger person, although I might find myself doing the same thing to my kids, its only at my breaking point. I have an autistic son, so he has major tantrums, and sometimes I have to catch myself because he has a disability, mashallah. My other two would just draw me little pictures when they know I'm upset with them, or just give me a big hug and kiss. I do tend to yell a lot, which is not good, May Allah help me, Ameen!!:tti_sister:
