Al-Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib [RA] narrates:
I said, "Oh Messenger of Allah [SAWS]! Teach me a thing that I can ask Allah for."
He [SAWS] replied, "Ask Allah for Al-Aafiyyah."
So I waited for a day then went to the Messenger of Allah [SAWS] and said, "Oh Messenger of Allah [SAWS]! Teach me a thing that I can ask Allah for."
So he said to me, "Oh Abbas! Oh uncle of the Messenger of Allah! Ask Allah for Al-Aafiyyah in this wordly life and the next."
[Reported by ibn Abi Shaibah, Ahmad, Tirmidhi and authenticated by Shaikh Al-Albani]
Vocabulary from the Hadith
- Al-Allamah Mubarakpuri says in his commentary of Tirmidhi, "Al-Aafiyyah is protection/defense of Allah for his slave".
- Al-Aafiyyah can also be understood as well-being, good health.
Lessons
- Asking Allah for aafiyyah is one of the greatest duas that one can make. This is because:
a) the Prophet [SAWS] gave this dua to his beloved uncle.
b) he [SAWS] commanded him to ask for aafiyyah twice, the second time adding more details ("Ask Allah for Al-Aafiyyah in this wordly life and the next").
- Al-Allamah Mubarakpuri says in his commentary of Tirmidhi that there are approximately 50 narrations of the Prophet [SAWS] asking for aafiyyah, whether it is in statement or meaning. This again shows us the importance of this dua.
- The Prophet [SAWS] said, "The supplication of every one of you will be granted if he does not get impatient." [Bukhari and Muslim] So we must be very patient and consistent in asking for aafiyyah from Allah.
- One of the most beatiful dua's from the Prophet asking for aafiyyah can be found here: http://www.makedua.com/print_dua.php?duaid=83. This dua is to be made morning and evening.
