Wallahi this has happened to me!
I remember it happened around mid-January where non-muslim was confused about whether to become a muslim or stay a Christian because she beleived that the message of Christianity didn't make sense to her anymore but she was reluctant to change!
One of the issues she raised with me was this ayah
Muhsin Khan: Then when the Sacred Months (the Ist, 7th, 11th, and 12th months of the Islamic calendar) have passed, then kill the Mushrikun (see V.2:105) wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, and prepare for them each and every ambush. But if they repent and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give Zakat, then leave their way free. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. At-Tawbah v5
she said Islam was very Barbaric, and her friend was egging her on...
i simply replied read the next ayah and she read it and she got her answer!
And if anyone of the Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) seeks your protection then grant him protection, so that he may hear the Word of Allah (the Quran), and then escort him to where he can be secure, that is because they are men who know not.

are you saying that she had the wrong translation i have heard this before it also happened to me this no-muslim guy said the quran says kill them in ambush just the same verse.
and this what the verse really means:

Non Muslims out of hatred for Islam often try to take verses out of context and make claims that Islam says to Muslims to Kill the non- muslims.
Most of the time they will use the verse of Surat ( Chapter ) - Tauba as an argument
Chapter 9 Vers 5 whcih says
But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
These ill / dishonest people take this verse out of context as that is important. This is related to the agreement that was made between Non- Muslims/ Idolators of Makkah and the Prophet and Muslims in Madina which was a state of Islam. The Idolators of Islam had broken the terms of the agreement and Allah send this verse to our Holy Prophet to prepare for the war.
Which commander of an Army will tell his soldiers not to fight and kill in the battlefield, even Jesus said to his disciples to fight and Kill at times.
Hower the beauty of Islam can be seen in the next verse and to these haters of Islam they never go to the next verse which is answer to their baseless argument.

" If one amongst the pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure: That is because they are men without knowledge".
This verse not only says to give the Idolators the peace if they want Peace in the battle fied but " ESCORT THEM to Safety ".
UN says in war between two nations, one nation in war can take prisoner of War and that is justice if the soldiers surrender. Quran says Escort them to safety not to put them in prison, it goes one step further than the UN.
Which supreme commander of Army will tell his commanders that if the enemy surrenders for peace escort them to safety.
Alhamdullilah Islam indeed is peace...
