Allah says in the Quran:

"Whatever calamity and misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your own hands have earned" (Soorah ash-Shooraa 42:30) and

"Whatever evil befalls you, it is from your own self" (Soorah an-Nisaa 4:79)

But there is a hadith where a man asks the Prophet (saw), who suffers the most afflictions in this life and he replied the prophets and then those that are like them and then those that are like them. Basically true Muslims that are loved by Allah will suffer in this life instead of the hereafter and vice versa for the disbelievers and bad muslims. (these aren't the exact words of the hadith but I read this hadith yesterday on this website).

My question is if the Quran says people who suffer in this life is because of their own fault or something bad that they've done then how can the hadith say that if people suffer in this life more suffer less in the hereafter (because they were good in this life)?

I hope u understand my question!

Explaining my question...

The Quran and hadith given kind of contradict each other because the Quran says whatever calamity befalls someone is THROUGH THEIR OWN FAULT but the hadith says good Muslims will suffer more in this life than the hereafter so calamity and afflictions will befall them BECAUSE ALLAH DOESN'T WANT THEM TO SUFFER IN THE HEREAFTER SO THE CALAMITIES AND AFFLICTIONS THAT BEFALL THEM ARE NOT THEIR FAULT BECAUSE THEY ARE GOOD MUSLIMS.

Now I know it was wrong to say the hadith and the ayahs given contradict each other but I'm just curious to know why they are both saying different things.

Understand or confused?

Brother you need to understand that quran and ahadith before you say they contradict. Bassically the quran and the prophetic ahadith are always on tell us the same things but you have to understand that the ahadith support the qur'anic translations but we as muslims have to believe in both as allah said in the quran "He who obeys the messenger of allah has indeed obeyed allah. but he who turns away, then we have not sent you (o muhammad) as watcher over them" surat nisa 80. altough the Qur'an and the ahadith talk about the same things we have to give the priority to the Qura'an and the ahadith. before you give an answer to your thoughts you should ask the scholars and am not a scholar myself sorry for inconvenience but the phrase "they contradict" made me type to your question. :salam2:

It depends on what one considers suffering to be. The prophets of Allah (peace and blessings be upont them) had to deal with some of the worst oppression that any person could face. Some were ridiculed, stoned, and even killed. Thus, they suffered in this life, but that doesn't mean that they have not gained anything from their suffering. These afflictions are what come with prophethood because they are the best among us and thus their test is to face these difficulties while conveying the message. Because of their patience and constancy to their duty to Allah (swt) during these times, they have fulfilled their mission and have earned the good of the hereafter. Thus, their suffering came with the greater good that they have earned. Is this not true for any believer who is constant during hard times? Disbelievers, on the other hand, when faced with turmoil, they begin to complain and get angry and they have not earned the benefit of this test. Thus, all they receive is bad things and that is the result of their actions (i.e. their disbelief and their lack of patience).

Check out the following ayah,

"Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere, Who say, when afflicted with calamity: "To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return":- They are those on whom (Descend) blessings from Allah, and Mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance. [Quran 2:155-157]

Allah tells us that we are tested by hard times and that our patience is a sign of our faith. So, of all people, is it not the prophets that must face the larger part of these tests since they are to be role models to the believers on how they should act during such times of pain. If everything is easy for the prophets, then how can we learn from them when such tests befall us?

Also, looking at it more simply, "what evil befalls us is because of what we have earned" depends on what you consider evil. A test from Allah (swt) is not evil, rather it is a blessing. But, if bad happens to you and you don't recognize the test then, yeah, it is evil befalling you because you don't have knowledge or faith enough to see the blessings that lie therein and act accordingly. You gain nothing from it but pain or "evil". The good comes from faith, and the faith comes with knowledge.

I hope that helps. I'm not the most knowledgeable person, but I hope some of it makes sense. Please correct me if I'm wrong because I'd like to know.

Jazakallahu khair for clearing that up for me. I was discussing it with a friend and her thoughts were that it may depend on what kind of calamity befalls u e.g. if ur a drug addict and u lose ur house, job, status because you've spent ur money on drugs then that's your fault but if a calamity has befallen you that's beyond your control such as ur kids turning out to be quite bad kids even though you've raised them and taught them islamic knowledge then that's no fault of yours and it's just a test from Allah to see how you cope with it and if u are patient etc..

I'm sorry if I offended anyone by saying the contradictory thing but thanx for your input!

Assalmoelaikoem warahmatullahi wbarakatuh,

Someone who is not able to read and understand the Quran in arabic, will have many problems with the translation to another language. No problem we as brothers and sisters will help you insha Allah

I will do my best insha Allah to give an explanation.

In this context there are two types of calamity:

(1)- Calamity as a punishment
(2)- Calamity as a test

the verse (42:30) is talking about every calamity as a punishment . This type of calamity is because of our sins.

And there are verses from the Quran which are talking about Calamity as a test like:

verse ( 2:155-156)
verse ( 29:1-3)

people who are patient their Imaan and level will increase. And the prophets are the most tested with calamities which will increase their level.

Wassalmoelaikoem warahmatullahi wbarakatuh
